  • I'm surprised Ernst Stavro Blofeld of Big Brother from "Nineteen Eighty-Four" didn't make it.

  • Wait...but Moby Dick wasn't a villain. The whole point of the novel was that you can't make enemies out of animals simply because...they're animals.

Kinda disappointed that Voldemort and a dude from 'Left Behind' made it on this list. Top comment has a point: Cthulhu/Deep Ones in general are great, and the Crimson King was actually good at villainy, unlike Voldemort.

  • In my opinion the White Witch is the most underrated villain of all time. If you have only seen the movies she is only “other” of the list but if you have read the books you would know of what I speak. she killed a whole world (or universe) including her sister, and she didnt feel remorse of doing that. I know about most of the villains in this list and in my opinion the only one here that can match Jadis for the first place is Sauron.

  • very happy iago is on the list and one of the top 3

  • Thank god you put Moriaty on there, he has become so underated considering most other villains now must have drawn some insperation of him, I think maybe u played too much on the Othello clip though because it does get a bit long winded for viewers who probably dont understand Shakespeare

  • no lestat?

  • why is it all villians...there should be one about heros...XD this is still a nice list though

  • The best villains push others, good people, to choose evil, either by seduction (like Dracula) or by whispering lies (like Iago and Satan). Just being a psycho or ruthless or vengeful doesn't cut it.

  • Where are Cthulhu and The Crimson King?

  • - Sauron

    - Voldemort

    - White Witch

    - Pennywise

    + Cthulhu

    + Morgoth

    + Scarlet King

    + Auditors of Reality

And that'd be about mine I think.

  • excellent villian choices:)

  • Moriarty!!!!!!!!!! :D

  • Nice list but I would have put Randall Flagg and Hannibal Lecter somewhere on this list.

  • Iago doesn't count. He's not from literature, he's from drama. You might as well include Darth Vader.

  • @DulBeat what do you mean 'he's not from literature'...since where are the works of William Shakespeare not literature?

  • @GriffithAMPS you can't put novels and plays under the same category, they're two vastly different mediums. There's no point in reading a play unless you're going to be in it.

  • Sauron!?!? Sauron is slave and eternal bitch to the true #1 villian. Melkor-Morgoth

  • Pennywise was a LOT scarier in the book. I loved the book and the mini-series, though.

Voldermort was better in the book, too.

    Sauron - FTW!

  • Eh......if this is a top 10 of villains from BOOKS then why is there movie clips...

  • Sauron FTW!

  • To help everyone Sauron's master is Morgoth, and its really gay cause morgoth is like 20 times saurons size its hilarious

  • Dude Iago is awesome, but you forgot Javert from les miserables

  • @LadyGaGaFan691 I would consider Javert more like an anti hero than a villain. He's a good person but just sees the world in a very black and white way.

  • the Joker should've made it and so should've Darth Vader (just suggestions)

  • epic song

  • is Nicolae the anti-christ?

  • Most are great, but I think you left out Mr. Hyde, and the oh so very evil Big Brother.

  • what movie was it that showed lago on the number two spot??

  • How did Jadis beat Dracula????

But I have to agree...Voldemort may have the power, but Mordred has teh PWNAGE!

    Love this song, too!

  • Yeah Morgoth trumps Sauron badly

  • You should be proud of this list, I need a couple to complete it : )...

I do not agree with Voldemort or White queen, but just my opinion.

Maybe Morgoth could replace Sauron, don´t you agree?

I´m a great fan of Mordred and Dracula too, they deserve higher places.

    Great list anyway...thx for posting

  • nicolae should have had a higher place like 3 or even 1

  • everything is great , but Dracula should get a better place , and there should be Mr. Hyde

  • dracula 4 sure!!

  • I'm facing Pennywise in Stephen King's "IT" right now....on about page 800! GREAT book and Pennywise is..... you have to read it to understand. Very trippy. Pennywise can be anything.

  • o man, great book, but if your a stephen king fan, read THE STAND, easily his best piece

  • In my opinion, the White Witch, Pennywise and Voldemort are nothing compared to Dracula. I mean, Bram Stocker said it: he´s the devil itself with human form.

  • I understand. ^_^

Some of this is kind of based on the fact that most of my audience is too young to appreciate characters like Dracula the way you and I can. Then again there's Iago and Modred. I am happy with this list overall.

  • Dracula is nothing compared to Sauron!

  • In which terms? Bram Stocker stated that Dracula is the Devil itself, Sauron, is just the pawn of another Dark Lord [Actually I can't remeber his name, I'm not a Lord of the Rings fan XD] who is like the devil. So... there you have it. And also, you must remember power is not the only thhing that matters, evilness also counts, and Claude Frollo is another great villain that misses on this list.

  • Victor Hugo is one of my favorite writers (with his sympathetic villains) and Claude Frollo is one of his masterpieces. ^_^

  • Sauron was no pawn. He was chief lieutenant to Morgoth and, after his masters death, took over as the enemy of middle earth. He was even in some ways superior to his master, in that he wished only to control the minds of men, not the actual matter of the world, as Morgoth did. He was not more evil or powerful, but more scheming.

  • @tiojaviss dude it's not Sauron who's the pawn you are thinking about Saruman. Saruman is Sauron's subordinate. Sauron is the ultimate Dark Lord and he'll kick Voldemort's ass xD

  • @verg1l9 Wasn't Sauron Melkor's (or Morgoth, it's the same dude) subordinate? But yes, I know Sauron kicks Voldemort's ass. That must be his hobby...

  • @tiojaviss no i don't think he was because Morgoth died at the end of the 1st age of middle-earth(that's why the first age ended) and Souron comes like in the middle of the 2nd age or even later not to mention that in the beginning Souron was a good guy( i think an elf ) and he became evil years later so there's no way he was Morgoth's pawn though i could be wrong about Souron ever being good( it's been a while since i read Tolkien) but and maybe Souron USED to be his pawn when Morgoth was alive

  • @verg1l9 I think that Ilamzrt is right... but as I said before, I'm not a LOTR fan xP. I'm a Star Wars fan :P

  • @verg1l9 Read the Silmarillion. Sauron is Melkor-Morgoths bitch. Sauron was just a shadow trying to regain Morgoths original might

  • @verg1l9 No, Morgoth was imprisoned at the end of the first age . . . and Sauron is the same race (species?) as the Balrog. . . a "demon of the ancient world."

  • @tiojaviss yes i agree but dracula persona has been totally ruined by hollywood of recent age . And with films like twilight the whole vampire genre can be taken seriously anymore.

  • @6Gizmo101 I have the book Dracula and plan on reading it as well as Stephen King's Salem's Lot. Is that better? Also, I hate Twilight.

  • @tiojaviss dracula is for twilight fans. the Most Badass is moriarty

  • @Dzulumsito I'm sorry but I completely disagree with you. I hate Twilight, I absolutely DESPISE it! Twilight is not about vampires or werewolves, it's about fairies and over-sized dogs. It's a shame what Stephanie Meyer did to the vampire legacy.

  • @Dzulumsito

I don't think Twilight fans would like Dracula. He's not "sparkling" *vomits at thinking of that word*

    But indeed, Moriarty is great!

  • Voldemort? Bah! Torok the Troll was a bigger badass - He fought the original Harry Potter! Hannibal Lecter and some villains from (continental) European literature would definitely make a list...

    Others worth mentioning:

-Antagonists from classical Greek plays, Russian novels and W. Gibson's cyberpunk stories.

    -Lovecraft's abysmal demons and Cthulhu.

    -Humans/Insects/Skinnies from R. Heinlein's Starship Troopers.

-The Spacing Guild, the Emperor and the Harkonnen from F. Herbert's Dune.

  • Comment removed

  • I think this list should be renamed "Top 10 villains in anglo saxon literature", because i can't see any from spanish (or hispanic), french, german, russian, italian, chinese, indian or japanese literature.

  • That's a good point ^__^. To be honest, I actually am familiar with a lot of foreign literature (because I live in the great Pacific Melting Pot of Hawaii). I'm going to leave the title alone though. I don't think it's hurting too many people.

  • Just remove Mobby Dick and the pathetic Witch and list is aceptable.

  • Who do you think had a more humiliating defeat Voldemort or sauron?

  • Voldemort was killed by a little boy, Sauron was killed but the king of men. you tell me

  • Um, Voldemort committed accidental suicide. When he cast a spell on Harry Potter with Potter's wand, the spell reflected and killed Lord Voldemort

  • Well that's man's fault. We choose to use our free will against God and against ourselves, so why should He reward us for it?

  • The reason they go to hell is because they did not accept God's gift of eternal salvation.

  • Needs more Morgoth. Sauron ain't nothing but a boy scout compared to Morgoth.

  • i think you neglected the most evil, fearsome and horrifying villain in all of mankinds literature. let me just say:

    Iä! Iä! Cthulhu fhtagn!

  • "Macbeth beware the thane of Fife"

gosh i hate macduff what a backstabbe I believe Shakeaspeare is a genius

Why is pennywise as a villain He sucks..I think emperor palpatine from star wars would ran him over...Moby dick isnt a villain and ICE QUEEN?? wtf dude you ae lost NARNIA WAS CHILDISH...

  • Randall Flagg should have made it...

  • That is such a great book.

  • @scandinavianInferno Yeah, way more than Pennywise

  • @scandinavianInferno He's on the one I'm making.

  • Anyone who argues over this is either a die hard fan, or going by movie acts. It's literature, stop going by all their celluloid antics, Jadis (White Witch) could kill just as easily as turn to stone, Nicolae could summon fire from the sky to consume people and survived getting stabbed in the head, Sauron could cause fear from a hundred miles away and Voldemort seriously copied the whole Horecrux thing from the one ring. Anyway, that's just an opinion, try to properly debate will ye.

  • Sauron could cause pure fear even if he just sits on his tower Barad-Dur...

  • Exactly my point. Come to think of it, Sauron could make the sky turn black from Mordor, and even the mention of the Ring's inscription caused the room to tremble.

  • 5 The White Witch, she is the Devil, ruled for 100 years with a cold iron fist and she murdered Aslan, an all powerful!

4 Voldermort, don't like him or the series, but man was he a vicious killer, remorseless, violent and cruel.

3 Mordred, sired by a witch, corrupt and cruel, he destroyed one of the most brilliant fantasy kingdoms ever.

    2 Iago, master manipulator.

1 Sauron, conquered Middle Earth, corrupted scores of people, caused Numenor's destruction, made himself all but invincible.

  • Sauron is more Devilish than The White Witch...

  • They were both inspired by Lucifer. But my comment was based on the fact that Morgoth in the Simarillion was a more direct link to Lucifer (being the fallen Maia and everything), while Jadis was better described. My one annoyance with the Simarillion was that it was a history, not a narrative.

  • Good list. I like why they were listed like that as well.

10 Moby Dick, the ultimate opponent that took on a life of it's own in the eyes of Ahab.

9 Moriarty, One of the earliest proper nemeses who just wouldn't die.

    8 Dracula, the first vampire!

7 Pennywise, unfortunatley I don't know him, but a guy I know whose read IT says he scarred him for life.

6 Nicolae Carpathia, he's the freakin Antichrist, Satan's Avatar on earth.

  • That's what i was just thinking. Even though moby dick was a big badass whale, Ahab pretty much was the craziest capt. to set afoot a boat.

  • Moby Dick was not the villain of the story Captain Ahab was. Moby Dick was just the man's obsession.

  • What movie is #6 from ? :)

  • The meeting scene is from Left Behind part 1. The other scene where Nicolae gets shot is from Left Behind World At War

  • Good list, but you forgot Capt. Jas. Hook and Long John Silver.

  • The best villains are Sauron, Pennywise and Dracula!

  • If only comics or graphic novels counted (Can you guess the villian im thinking of)

    HH HH

    HH HH

    HHHHHH

    HH HH

    HH HH AA A A

    AAAAAA

    A A

    A A

  • damn, it screwed up lettering aw well... you know what they say, laughter is the best medicine!

  • Do you mean the Joker?

  • I dont know

    who is it?

  • well basically Edward came out of now where and turned the tide of a war from his side losing to them winning and he probably wouldve taken over the world if he hadn't been killed

  • people who dont know who Edward is go read the book TRUANCY is very good. Anyway i thought of 2 more villians that should be on there Big Brother from 1984 and Randall Flagg from The Stand

  • O the number 6 is the antichrist.

  • sauron and voltemor are both good villians but i really think Edward from Truancy deserves to be on the list

  • What about Jack Torrence.

  • The reason Jack Torrance isn't up there is cause he wasn't the villan if you read the book it would make sense Jack didn't become evil, the overlook got him and made him evil.

Danny even said,it's not daddy its just a mask.

And he was right cause Jack wasn't the villan!

  • Moby Dick a villain? At least you included Iago....

  • Voldemort and The White Witch are highly overrated faggots!! They should not even be here!! They're many cocksuckers that think Voldemort is more evil than Sauron... Let me guess.. Voldemort just created 7 whore-cruxes in order to avoid death, Sauron has done many things beyond that shit

  • It's Horcruxes and he once took over the world.

  • Voldemort never took over the world, he took over a faggy school with faggy teenaged pompous wankers!!!

  • He took over the wizarding world in Deathly Hallows. Pay attention when you read.

  • Oh ya, he took over a world which consists of a bunch of pansies that wave their wand... YAWN!! he only took over Britain....

  • And Sauron was different. He failed to take over a world of little hobbits. Voldemort suceeded in taking over a world of magic far greater than Middle-Earth. Anyways, I'm not going to argue with you anymore.

  • Sauron took over the world...and the world of magic is a fucking joke compared to Middle-Earth...just look at those dumbfuck wizards, the Elves, Men and Dwarves of Middle-Earth will kill them all easily...all those fucking wizards are a fucking joke..

During the time of Lord of the Rings, Sauron wanted to find his Ring to take over Middle-Earth for the second time!!! He wanted to cover all the lands in second darkness

  • dude, i agree with you too, that Sauron is a better villain but, seriously?

    calm down a little!

Voldy just beats Sauron by one thing, Voldy died in the hand of a mostly trained wizard and Sauron died cuz of of a 4 foot little hobbit infiltrating his base and klling him!

  • The wizard pansies would cast some stupid dumbfuck spell and the Elves in Middle-Earth would just use their shields to block the spells, and shoot those dumbfuck wizards with their Arrows!!!

AND..Sauron would not bother fighting Voldemort!!! SO SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU DIRTCUNT!!

  • Hm... So it's Sauron... And what about Melkor?

  • theres no movie on him

  • good point

  • Voldemort shouldn´t even be here, besides that I think all of them are OK. By the way, who's this Nicolae guy I haven´t heard of this novel "left behind"

  • He's the Antichrist and he's the best villain ever!

'Born in Cluj County, Romania, Carpathia's birth is the product of genetic engineering and artificial insemination. His mother, Marilena, is unwittingly convinced by the followers of Satan to become the mother of a child who, they assure her, will change the face of the world.

Through his parents, Carpathia possesed a very unique bloodline, dating back to Ancient Rome so he could actually claim to be a Roman descendent.'

  • why you include number "0" as top ten ?

you forgot villains like The Joker and the Green Goblin.

and you should put Moby Dick as number 1 coz its big, itll own all the other human villains big time !

  • Villains in LITERATURE (novels, books) not comic books.

  • well..........you included Voldemort and a giant whale as a villain, i thought the list can be free lance.......

  • pennywise?

  • Lord Ombra, Voldemort, Arawn Death-Lord, and the White Witch are the ones who deserve the honor (although Arawn and Ombra did not recieve it) and Sauron is way too overrated in my opinion.

  • Right on all counts. Other claimants to the title of greatest literature villain are Opal Koboi, Lucifer from Paradise Lost and Hannibal Lector.

  • Sauron is the best!! Voldemort and White Witch are big faggots!! Voldemort is the most overrated villain in Literature!!!

  • Need a brain-scan much?

  • FUCKWIT, The White Witch just got a stupid stick that stones all morons, Sauron can use his 5 foot fucking mace and kick her ass.

Even the Witch-King can shit on her, before she tries to stone him, he can destroy her pathetic stick and kill her

  • lol u forgot the best book villian of em all... Darken Rahl, from Terry Goodkind's "Wizard's First Rule"... =D

  • Sorry about that! LOL. Honestly, my favorite villain, who you probably wouldn't recognize, isn't in here either. Also Macbeth, my personal fave Shakespeare villain, isn't as well. To me, I try not to be biased but you can't help it. Like in my other top villain video my fave villain of all time I ranked only #4.

    ^__^

  • Who's your favourite villain?

  • Nice list, but I probably would have had Morgoth instead of Sauron.

  • Thank you! I just felt that Sauron was much better known and visible, the active force of evil in Lord of the Rings. Thank you again very much!

    ^__^

  • Personally I think the Witch and Voldemort are also more powerful than Sauron.

  • you forgot dr.frankenstein. (the monster wasnt evil in the book)

  • Thank you for your opinion, you're right, the Frankenstein monster was not evil in the book and his creator is not as well publicized. That's why I decided to hold him out. ^__^

  • which iago did you take this from?

  • Cultural plebeians, dear boy.

  • Holy shit :|

    They're just fictional crap.

Besides, Sauron got killed by a woman, who stuck a sword in his face.

To kill Voldemort you had to destroy 7 horcruxes. So if Voldemort had his god damn horcruxes and Sauron tried to kill him, he'd still be here :)

So when he did come back, he could summon a woman with a knife (my mum for instance) and then Sauron will be gone.

    Then I'll kill Voldemort.

    EVERYONES A WINNERRR :)

  • What a thoroughly witty and well-thought out response. Fartemort? Oscar Wilde must be turning in his grave. If you want to argue as to who is the superior villain, Sauron or Voldemort I suggest you take it to one of the many Voldemort vs Sauron videos out there. Or maybe a good psychiatrist office.

  • Yes and Voldemort had Dementors and Death Eaters to carry out his dirty work. The Witch-King wouldn't last a minute against Voldemort. Oh and Bellatrix Lestrange could beat Sauron.

  • Have you read the Narnia books? Jadis wiped out an entire civilisation! She conquered TWO worlds. Sauron couldn't even conquer one! "Sauron created a barren wasteland full of fire and dust." Erm, no he didn't, it was already there, he just made it his power base. The Witch plunged the world into a hundred years of winter!

  • Oh, few more things. My father is a Catholic, I am heterosexual, you misspelled loser and if anyone here needs to get a life, it's you. And given your username, I assume you're from Liverpool. Beautiful city but evolutionary throwbacks like you give it a bad name.

  • Finally if Voldemort is a "cocksucker who just wants power", then what does that make Sauron? After all, what's he after? Hmm, power maybe? "In what way are they evil?" Well, the White Witch, in addition to wiping out everyone on her home planet, murdered the son of God, turned people to dust or stone just for annoying her and, oh yes, wanted to rule the world. Voldemort meanwhile, well just look at the amount of people he tortured and killed, often for no reason.

  • To your next "argument", the fact that I consider Sauron a mediocre villaind does not constitute a need to die. I think it's clear who the waste of oxygen is in this equation. Also, Voldemort, as well as being smarter than Sauron, has a sense of humour, has the decency to show up and actually fight his enemies (and taunt them) instead of just sitting on top of a tower and glaring at people. Additionally, he accidentally killed himself. At least he wasn't beaten by a hobbit.

  • You're pathetically funny. However some of your insults have been annoying, therefore I shall take the time to contradict some of your "arguments." The White Witch is a sadistic, power-crazed mass murderer who wants nothing less than the destruction of humanity and the enslavement of the world. Her immense power, her intellect and the fact that she's never had to answer to a higher force in her life, as well as her total lack of remorse and her immense charisma, make her the classic villain.

  • umm yeah he agrees, that's why he put sauron as #1 its a tpo 10 list. #1 = the best

  • Okay, somebody needs therapy.

  • Great list but I think you need to add Arawn the Death lord from The Chronicles of Prydain books. he's so overlooked!

  • I think it's because he doesn't come across as beng particularly powerful but then again no-one in The Chronicles of Prydain does to be honest.

  • Weel in truth, he is very powerful. He has an army of undead soldier and can turn into anyone and use all of their powers. He's like Sauron, Voldemort, and about a million other villains rolled into one.

  • True. I was very impressed by him when I started reading the books but I was disappointed when he didn't show up at the end of the last one. It was like Lloyd Alexander couldn't be bothered thinking of a decent ending.

  • I can't argue with you there. They did need a better battle against Arawn than a fight with a snake. He could have at least made the fight against a giant snake.

  • Yeah, that's what I thought. It would have been good if Arawn did a Jafar on them, lol. Have you noticed how Evil Overlords will often turn into snakes during the final battle?

  • That's probably because Satan appeared as a snake in the Garden of Eden and the snake has become a symbol of evil since then.

  • Very true.

  • Carpathia beats PennyWise! But Sauron is always the ultimate villian. Go Tolkien!

  • Why do witches always have to be portrayed as evil in literature? I think that if writers are going to do that, there should at least be a good witch to battle aginst the evil witch.

  • Erm, ever heard of Glinda?

  • If Pennywise is here....WHERE's RANDEL FLAGG????

  • I see your point but Flagg is utterly inept and so doesn't belong on any list of great villains.

  • My personal list is

    Dracula

    Macbeth

    Iago

    Frollo

    Moriarty

  • Really bad! the only villains that deserved to be in this list are Moriarty and Dracula, don´t forget that Ahab was the true villain in "Moby dick". My list: 10 Frankesteins Monster (Frankestein) 9 Judge Holden (Blood meridian) 8 Dorian Gray (The Picture of Dorian Gray) 7 Polyphemus (Odissey) 6 The Devil (Dante´s Inferno) 5 Dracula (Dracula) 4 Moriarty (the adventures of Sherlock Holmes) 3 Adamastor (Camoes´s Lusiadas) 2 The wolf (The brothers grim; little red ridding hood) 1 Ahab (Moby Dick)
  • Why Is Pennywise Evil i forgot?

  • He's a demonic child-murdering clown who commits obscene acts of genocide for fun.

  • No No No! He's a formless cosmic shapeshifter that feeds on children!

  • Oh, same thing.

  • How is he genocidal?

  • You must be joking! All the people he kills throughout the story.

  • Very good! =) I should have to say Moriarty would be #1...

  • Excelent point, Voldemort, the White Witch and even that Mordred have no place on this list... but anyway, thats my opinion, and I respect this list as much as all lists

  • How can you say that? Mordred is one of the most vile and sadistic villains in the history of literature while Voldemort is one of the most powerful, evil and iconic antagonists in fiction. As for the White Witch, she should be in top place, followed by Voldemort. Sauron meanwhile is overrated in my opinion and should be eighth at least.

  • good job on the list

I do think Dracula is a bit underated, he probably deserved 4th or 5th but whatever

ofc Sauron always takes first place in most lists, but just once I'd like to see Tyler Durden enter one of the book vilains list... -.-

    Good Job anyway

  • well, i agree with much of this list, but if i had to pick my greatest villan in literature, i would have to pick Saint Dane from the Pendragon series (it has nothing to do with King Arthur). He literally destroys entire worlds, believing that wat hes doing is for the best. Of coarse, i cant describe enough how evil he is, so you would have to read the books

  • i can see why u put pennywise there when i saw IT i couldn't get good sleep for months but i was about 8 and i had to sneak it into my tv to watch it

  • As a Lit major, I think Ahab was a villain, rather than the whale

  • If you make a list for sub-villians or the such, the one ring should definately be on it.

  • Yes! You have Iago- his really is one twisted villain!!!

He goes about killing and distorting truths under the guise of retaining his wife (more or less) and then kills her. Besides, he totally wants to be in bed with Cassio ^_0

(my class had too much fun with that passage)

  • Very good list. Some are very scary. :P

  • Yeah Voldy!

  • i like this list!
