raocow's wisdom: forcing education upon our minds, i will not take this upfront and fight with all my might, power, skills and gorillas but i don't have a whole lot of them!
I love the sound of that language and it's a great country. But sometimes I think that to make their written language, they took the Roman alphabet, dropped the letters and numbers into a hat, shuffled it, and said, "Ok, the first one we draw out will be our 'A' sound, next will be 'B' ..."
If your microphone is a USB mic, the sound settings might have changed if you inserted it into a different port. I've done that before but it only lowered my volume down from 100 to 3.
Either that or the mic jack wasn't secured in the port. Could be something else though.
Speaking of using 3 in the middle of the world, some Arabic speakers (I would know *cough*) use 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9 to represent some consonants that are non-existent in English.
This sounds like the bonus director's commentary you'd get with the DVD. I kept expecting you to start talking about the enemies like they were crew members on the set.
I personally like the live commentary much better, though, the post-commentary isn't bad either.
IMO, live commentary does give your audience a feel of being in the game with the game music and sound fx in it. Also, that element of surprise that seems natural when it is done live.
Post-commentary, for me, gives me that passive feel and isn't really adventurous. Though, you may try recording game sound directly from your computer then commentate over it. That may be a little different.
I have to say, do live commentary for levels, yeah - though post-production might be better for levels you end up doing savestates on. However, do keep in mind the odd starkness of you just talking, so feel free to have some music in the background or something.
I like the live commentary more, but for the really hard levels that make you say "aarGHHh" and puzzle levels that make you sit there silently, maybe post would be better.
I must say I kind of like post-production; it lets you get a better stream of consciousness thing going on without distracting you from the game. However it would probably take longer to do and be more work for you, not to mention we wouldn't be able to get anymore chipmunk time.
I think I prefer the live commentary, but it;s cool how the post-production version has its own unique feel. I wouldn't be opposed to you exploring it from time to time as you see fit.
In regards to the Japanese LP system -- have you ever given though to, instead of showing us the entire run where you make it to the end after dying a couple times, why not just take it from where you've been dying, and continue from there after you pass it?
what you should do is when ever a level is getting really bad and unfair, and the whole video is just you going like "ARGH" then you should post commentate that. Because then, the video is able to be happy even though it was a bad level!
I think I like Live commentary better, there just seems something about post-production that just rubs me the wrong way, but I can't place my finger on exactly what...
Please continue doing live commentary, if only for the fact that we get the original music and sound effects alongside the commentary. These last two videos are... oddly quiet.
I personally like the live commentary much better. I wouldn't mind if you did post commentary, but I don't think that you should randomly switch between them mid-project unless you have to, like now. Perhaps you could do some LP's live and some Post-commentated?
Someone put his singing through Microsoft Songsmith, now. Hell, maybe raocow should run all his speech through that and make his videos like that so we do have some background music.
Post production commentary takes away all the surprised raocow moments, which are the most awesome things ever. Who dares to try to stop the time bomb?!
While the post commentary certainly wasn't bad, I must say I like the live commentary better. But perhaps it is a good idea to switch to post commentary if a stage ends up being too hard and you start losing your momentum.
Just keep the commentary live for the simpler levels.
The reason the Japanese LP system works is that they aren't talking over it so it doesn't become disjointed. Doing the post commentary makes sense when you lose 20+ lives and your throat is getting sore.
Those videos are funny because it's ridiculous how hard it is as opposed to what's being said.
I really am curious as to what you were going to say about your friend who tells you "if you need anything." you cut yourself off and I don't know what your friend really meant!
He probably meant to finish with "as long as it doesn't take any effort on my part" or something like that.
As for the post-commentary issue, I seem to remember that you tried it before with similar results - it's good either way, but post commentary takes you way longer and isn't really that much better. Since you're going to savestate on the impossible levels, I don't really see a need for it.
I honestly didn't even notice that you were doing post commentary until the end of the first video. I didn't know what you meant by post-production at first, but then again I DID just wake up so I was pretty dumb.
This might be a good tactic for hard but interesting levels that you want to showcase with less 'arrgghh'. If you could record game audio separately from live commentary, you could decide to go post after the fact. I don't know if your setup would allow that though.
By the way everyone, if I where to do 'planned' post-commentary I'd still keep the game music and sound effects! It's just that the whole 'sound' thing ended up being garbage!

I actually like them both pretty equally. You get some interestingly different commentary on the post production.

Recording things sometimes goes wrong and can't really be helped.
My guess is the trees didn't have layer priority, otherwise Mario would go behind them.

You can definitely try this again, it seems to work. Especially if it's one of those hard levels and you're redoing it over and over again.
