Actually the movie had some good background music because it didn't overstay its welcome. When the music did play, it was there to convey the atmosphere. It's a classic editing trick to allow the movie to tell its story through dialogue when it needs to, and then there's nothing to be said, let the music do the talking for you.

For example, when Curdie and Irene were exploring the caves, I remember the lack of music INCREASING the atmosphere. I thought I was exploring the cave with them!

I actually think that's a problem with movies today. There's way too much reliance on background music. There doesn't need to be constant use of music to set ambience, a good film maker will utilize the lighting and colors to set the mood in every scene. Music should be supplemental.
