  • Finland will never have a goalie problems

  • "pelin jälkee ottamaa parit? otetaan cheerleaderit mukaan."

"mikäs siinä, mutta pelataan nyt ensin."

  • Lechtonin: So, you like the flyers? Niittymaki: No, they suck. L.: Yeah pretty much.... N:Want to get a burger. L.:Now? In the Middle of a hockey game? N.: Not like I am going to win. L: Yeah... N:So you like th Bhawks? L: Yeah, They're better than your team. N: So do you want to get a burger? L: Yeah.
  • there is a lots of goalies in nhl from finland.Kiprusoff,bäckström,rinne,niemi,rask,niittymaki,toskala,lehtonen.those are just the ones who i remember now

  • i don't find it weird when two goalies from same counrty are talking each other, even if they'r from different teams.

  • really?

  • really what?

  • really really what?

  • i don't really know what really?

  • really?

  • really

  • you are right maybe they arent so good friends they maybe talking just because they are both finnish like me ,right

  • That's true. They chat a little before games. :)

  • looks like nitty and kärppä are good friends maybe they say "ny tekis mieli ruisleipää" or somthing like that :D

  • Unfortunately you are wrong. They are not friends at all.

  • @maestrothegreat

    actually they are

  • @ShepherdMoon90 I guess you know it from Nittymaki :)

  • Comment removed

  • Joni Ortio ja Mikko Rämö

  • Ihan talviolympialaisissa.

  • what is tossu?

  • vesa toskala

  • What is Lehtonen then? Lehtu?

  • he is "kärppä"

  • How do you know that? ;-)

  • Because we are Finns and we know all about finnish goalies! :D

  • everything??? very well! :) Who was Lehtonen's goalie coach back to Jokerit? Who was Niittymaki's goalie coach back in TPS? What was the major difference between their styles?

  • Lehtonen's goalie coach was Jukka Ropponen. Niittymaki's goalie coach was Urpo Ylonen. The major difference in their styles (not knowing if you mean coaches or goalies) is that both Nitty and Kipper always look so calm in net that it's weird and they're more athletic. Lehtonen and Backstrom have better technique and near perfect positioning so they don't appear as talented in highlight vids but are exactly that.

  • who, that is an impressive answer. I did not see much of Kipper and Backstrom, but Kari Lehetonen looks much more impressive than Niitty (even though he never won to Niitty). Is my impression correct that Jukka Ropponen was not very excited about Kari's working attitude?

  • I don't know about that, but I still remember this old interview of Jukka,

"Q: Who is the best goalkeeper that you ever worked with?

I have to say that it is Ari Sulander as I have a very long history of working with him and we have won several titles together. He will turn 40 during next season and still plays at very high level. Right after him come goalies like Niklas Bäckström, Kari Lehtonen and Pasi Nurminen."

So go figure. Does Kari have a bad attitude nowadays?

  • Yeah, I remember that. Jukka Ropponen talks a lot about Bäckström and rarely mentions Kari.

I wonder why he is not coaching in Finland any longer?

I think there must be something with Kari's attitude if he is not progressing with his NHL career.

  • Ropponen, Backstrom and Sulander train together every summer. Kari isn't around. A lot of good goalies aren't. They don't know each other anymore I guess. They got old.

Jukka's workload is in Swizerland now. Finland is loaded with goalie coaching and, well, goalies. He doesn't need to be there anymore.

I believe Kari got injured. He was doing just fine before.

  • If there needs to be gemination in the middle of the word then it's either Lehhu or Lettu (lettu=pancake) Maybe the last one sounds a bit gay..

  • haha the last one is more like he looks like now :))))))))))

  • kyllä se on kipperström

  • they are both from finland...

  • well....most hockey players r great guys, except for sean avery =)

  • hockey players r great guys eh? =)

  • I don't know about that

  • their was saying 'good luck for the game' with their own lang, Finnish, that what i do speak :D

  • says Australia bitch!!! fuck your own kangaroo

  • Such an intellectual comment, I must congratulate you on probably insulting your 100 person on youtube!!!

"they look like..." I was merely describing what I perceived you idiot

  • lol... finland has won australia - finland game 19-2 :D asdadsdasads hahahah so, do you know anything in hockey. play with kagaroos

  • Tharrild, go to play hockey with kangaroos and come to beat finland.

  • yeah !

  • haha

  • Kari Lehtonen has the same pads as kippursoff but different colours :D

  • sopupeliä 8)

  • There's something nice about this video.

To see opposing goalies just chat and probably wish each other good luck before the game. It's nice, you know?

  • fuck u ya cocksucker

  • They might chat because they have something common ;)

    And yes it's nice

  • r they not both finland goaltenders??

  • they are both from finland, if that was the question...

  • Loving this: two awesome finnish goalies in NHL playing against each others. Easy life:D

  • I wish I heard what they were speaking about :]

  • i love finish goalies!

  • Miten voitte ssaada selvää mitä he puhuvat?

  • Onks joku saanu? =o

  • miten oot noin tyhmä

  • haista vittu, joku tuol aiemmin sano jotain et mitä noi ois sanonu, vittu ootko ite vähä tyhmä?

  • finnish goalies are the best! my favourites are on the ice in this vid.and by the way ium from finland.

  • have u guys noticed most the top goalies come from finland or canada?

  • Mostly Quebec.

  • from TURKU: norrena, niittymäki and kiprusoff :)

  • Dont forget Jani Hurme, Teemu Lassila, Urpo Ylönen, Alexander Salak... :)

  • paitsi että voisin jopa väittää ettei salak ole from turku :D

  • Teemu Lassila? jee?

  • ettei salakki vaa ois sieltä tsekeistä ???

  • What???

  • Salak voi olla tshekeistä, mutta missä hänestä syntyi huippumaalivahti? Aivan!

  • Why So Jealous? :)

  • they both have sweet pads

  • verry true!

  • speaking of pads, why did nitty go back to his old white pads? the black ones were sweeter.

  • ya i totally agree

  • he diddnt like the change. he loved his white pads. he felt so comfertable in them that he said they gave him alot more confidince

  • then why did he wear his black ones the entire season?

  • becasue he hates cahnging his pads he played solid in them that year but knew he was going to his old pads the entire season, it was almost like an experiment to see which ones he liked better

  • Well, now i see why he has his old white ones back. He plays way better in them.

  • See this: Goalie = Maalivahti. :D

  • and?

  • they are very good friends, both grew up in finland and are finnish style goaltenders great to see good sportsmanship

  • "Tiiätkö, mun tekis ihan älyttömästi mieli HooKoon Sinistä."

    "No älä!"

  • hahaa :D

  • vähä kova xD

  • hehe

  • @jalojalka niin täällä korvessa sitä ei saaha :D

  • i cant hear anything what they said...

  • Very good goalies, Nitty and Stoat!!

  • niittymaki on iha vitun huippu! ainaki moskovan turnaukses ja olympialaisis venäjää vastaan!!! pojot täällekin!

  • eihän niittymaki pelanut moskovassa

  • kari lehtonen on paremppi kuin niitymäki!!!!!!!!

  • 100% agree! :)

  • Yep mutta niitty on kans hyvä :)

  • Etukumi is confusing "onnea matkaan" and "onnea matkalle" which have a slightly different meaning. "Onnea matkalle" means "good luck for your journey" where as "onnea matkaan" means "good luck with you". Savvy? =)

  • The first one who said about the trip was Madhouse2332:

when good luck = onnea matkaan. matkaa does infact mean trip or holiday but it is a finnish saying to say good luck

  • Trip or journey is "matka". Most likely the saying "onnea matkaan" was originally a way to wish a safe journey. Just like godspeed in English. The word "onnea" is a word to wish happy birthday/anniversary. You can also say "onnea peliin" to wish good luck for the game.

  • yeah, it make sense. The only way to verify the words would be to say them to Kari. Lets see his reaction :-D

  • I bet one million that they say at the end "Good luck"

  • Please, I am waiting for your million - they could not say "Good luck" because they spoke in Finnish ;-)

  • no sitten ne sanoivat varmasti onnea.. i didnt say what kind of million i would bet with

  • hei, hei, I don't speak Finnish. What did you write? What type of million did you bet? How to say in Finnish "Good luck"? :)

  • i wrote that they probably said good luck in finnish.. and when good luck = onnea matkaan. matkaa does infact mean trip or holiday but it is a finnish saying to say good luck

  • kiitos for the Finnish lesson, buddy! I wish I knew how to pronounce it that I could tell it to Kari.

What would Finns say to cheer up somebody?

And were are those millions? ;-)

  • You really don't need to say anything else than just "onnea". ON-NAY-AH is probably the closest to the actual prounounciation I can give you. It would all be easier if all languages were written like they are spoken (English is not one of them: just idea of actually needing spelling competitions etc. seems retarded to Finns).

  • Oh, thank you for the tip! Do you mean that I can skip the word "matkaan"?

    Is it Onnea or onnEa?

the spelling competition idea seems retarded not only to Finns ;)

  • It's "onnea" but "onnea matkaan" would definitely be the one to say to Kari :)

  • Why? a hockey game is not a trip or holiday. Right?

  • Here be some quick and simple video lessons.

    watch?v=45thdX1zJso

    watch?v=bx4HMLluXMg

  • thanks for the links!

It does not explain the difference between "onnea" and "onnea matkaan", but now I know how to say bye :-D

  • Easier pronouncing tips for English speaking would be ON-EA where the EA part is pronounced with a short E. More proper way to pronounce the double NN is simply just to prolong the English N a bit. So it would be like onNea. With a short E.

  • Actually I forgot to say the other letters are pronounced short too. Short O, short E and short A. Just like pronouncing the English vowels. Only the NN may be a bit difficult but it just the same as the English N but prolonged. You know what I mean?

  • long N is not a problem, the principal and the secondary accents are tricky :(

  • Learning the Finnish vowels and consonants makes it much easier. They are quite easy for English speaking as most of them sound very similar. This may help with the accents.

    lingsoft*fi/cgi-bin/finhyph

  • In English they say godspeed so "onnea matkaan" would be best translated into "god speed".

  • now I see! Kiitos paljon!

Does the principal accent rest on the first syllable in both words?

  • Yeah I think it does. On-Nea Mat-Kaan. Finnish is quite easy for English speaking theres only a couple of letters which are pronounced a bit different. A, E, I, O, are pronounced short and U is pronounced long. As in uuuuuuh. Y sounds completely different so that's the only letter you need to learn by ear. Consonants sound also almost the same only some minor differences. The letters J and R sound different.

  • Forget the "uuuuuuh" advice. You hear the U far better from the video link I gave.

  • :-)

  • I meant 'mahtipontisuus' I guess. Fortunately the pronunciations of Finnish sounds is not a problem for me. :)

  • OK. The emphasis is almost always on the first syllable.

  • ugh, the trick is it is ALMOST always. As soon as "good luck" is not an exception I am good :)

  • It's on first syllable in both words.

  • A kick ass Finnish saying to cheer up somebody would be "hyvä kari näytä niille" which would translate as "way to go kari show 'em what you got." You can use both sayings together like that or separated "hyvä kari" and "näytä niille".

  • No, i mean how to cheer him up when he sucks

  • Good question. How would you cheer up someone in English? Cheer up mate? I suppose it would be "leuka pystyyn" or "ensi kerralla paremmin" or something like that. It wasnt your fault = ei se ollut sinun vikasi.

  • I'd say in English 'cheer up, buddy'. However, it might be a different expression to use in Finnish for this situation.

  • "cheer up mate" = "leuka pystyyn"

  • cooool!

  • I, as a Finn myself, would never say "onnea matkaan" unless someone was actually going for a freaking trip. You say that to Kari and he'll say "I'm not going anywhere" (well, unless he is going to a road game with the team, that is).

  • wow, Finnish language must be really not an easy one if a few native speakers have different opinions on one simple phrase! I am confused now.

"Onnea" OR "onnea matkaan" you have to say if you want to wish a Finnish player good luck before the game - that is THE QUESTION!

  • You can also wish good luck for the game as "onnea peliin". But "onnea matkaan" translates as godspeed so if you are uncomfortable saying godspeed then dont use the Finnish variant either.

  • Onnea matkaan tarkoittaapi enemmänkin "onnea mukaan". Ei siis kirjaimellisesti matkalle. Tosi juttu.

  • Etukumi, you were right. Kari said that "onnea matkaan" does not work and it should be said "onnea peliin" (that's what he told to Niitty).
