Rembrandt, Rubens, Buonarroti, and da Vinci should probably be included in any consideration, although "best" lists are really meaningless, as everything is personal preference. My four favorite artists are Maxfield Parrish, William M. Harnett, Johannes Vermeer and Peter Paul Rubens. Someone else's favorites are theirs. As I said, personal preference.
@JeffersonDinedAlone Agree with you that Parrish is spectacularly underrated. He simultaneously mastered several different styles, much as Picasso did. His work is immediately recognizable and always beautiful.
I disagree where is my beloved Botticelli? His art is beautiful and deserves a place on this list! I disagree with Da Vinci, think about the importance of earlier artists were compared to him...
Your musical choice is proof you can be saved. This list should be turned upside down and rotated quickly on a vertical axis so the weaker ones fly off and the other deserving top tenners will work some magic, as always, and beam back to their respective pantheonic musical chairs ;0) . . PLAY ON MAESTRO MOZART!
Kind of disagree with this stuff. These are the most popular, but Raphael Sanzio is easy top 4 or 5. He's a beautiful artist. But its nice to see people appreciate art. Nice video.
This should be called, "A Compilation of Some Popular Painters from Western Civilization". This subject is way too subjective to compile an accurate, all-inclusive list. Also, sculpture, architecture, drawing, etc. are missing. I consider photography a separate art form. Impossible to compare it with painting.
I'm an artist and while I do agree that these artists were brilliant, I kinda get fed up when the only art that is ever appreciated is painting, there are so many different mediums out there that never get a look in. An artist is not just a painter. Create a Top ten list which includes all the mediums: music, film, photography, sculpture, performance, writing, etc. Think outside the box, some of the best art have not been paintings, its just an oppinion.
@Ozzrya91 Regardless of what other people are posting. You have to look at the idea of "greatness" in textbook meaning of the word. Great means caused the most change - good or bad. First of all Michelangelo should be on the list because his style set the stage for what art would look like for centuries after his work first was created. His use of as minimal lines as possible was the standard in painting after he used it. Cont.
Best Artists: 1. William Shakespeare 2. Frank Zappa 3. Salvador Dali 4. Michaelangelo 5. Roger Waters 6. Edgar Alan Poe 7. Jimi Hendrix 8. Jim Morrison 9. Picasso 10. John Sebastian Bach Maybe the order is not exactly how I want it, but that's my list, and nobody is going to agree with me!
Excellent video. I'm just getting into art and was looking for something defining like this. My favorite is Monet, just so ahead and more mature than the others.
To me, my taste would be Rembrandt. He has the skill and talent naturally. Its not too much to say that he was an impression at his time. Really adore his work.
I would like to have omitted Rubens, Munch and Michelangelo from this list.
Rubens style is too crowded for my taste. He seems to add bodies here and there without notice of composition. I admire Munchs work but when talking about the "greatest ever" I just don't think he belongs. And while Michelangelo may be one of the greatest sculptures of all time most of his paintings don't belong with the best ever.
As much as I love Impressionism I cannot put an Impressionist above a painter like Caravaggio, who in my opinion should be number one. Caravaggio was not a prolific painter like some of the others mentioned on the list but his knowledge of the human form coupled with his keen attention to contrast, color and composition make him the greatest painter I've ever seen.
hendrix created dimensions in music that people dont seem to appreciate or just visulize with their mind. he led the way for more artists to expand from his own creation. he was influenced by other artists who were influenced by other artists and so on. so for someone to say they are the best is just ignorance. you would not be the guitarist you are today without someone stepping thru the sound barriers we cannot see within ourselves
"The Scream" made Edvard Munch's entire career. He's out. Top 3 were great. Although I would replace Pablo Picasso with Henri Matisse. But I think this list was made out of fame rather than actual talent.
Superior to Picasso? Dali, Salvatore Dali. Unless there is another Dali, that I am not aware of, Salvatore Dali is nowhere near what Picasso was - not on any level. Picasso was 20th century art.
You just follow the herd. I bet you think Jimi Hendrix was the best guitarist too. Typical stock responses from coffee table followers. Don't believe all the hype, man.
I love Hendrix, and yes he was the best. I do not follow the herd. However, sometimes my conclusions are the same as the herd. I will not make a decision or form an opinion just to be different. People who want to be different all the time; become societite version of what a rebel should be. They are usually bohemian half-wits with tattoos. The liberal-types who join Green Peace and believe in global warming. I am a free thinker.
Hendrix wasn't the best. He was surpassed in technique, speed & ability years ago. Like Picasso, he was great but he isn't/wasn't the best. You don't display any evidence of free thinking
Hendrix was by far the best. Ask any good guitar player and think will say Hendrix was leaps and bounds better than anyone. Van Halen and Randy Rhoads were probably the next best. But, that is just for that genre of guitar. Dali was a commercialized version of Picasso - with his silly moustache and beard and all. He would always make a strange forced expression when he had his picture taken. He was trying to promote a faux eccentric artist image, much like Warhol.
I'm a professional guitar player as well. I have seen the best. I would say Hendrix is way better than anybody, no question in my mind. SRV said he was the best, Jeff Beck said he was the best, Neil Young said he was the best, Joe Satriani said he was the best, Leslie West said he was the best, Eric Clapton said he was the best, Carlos Santana said he was the best. What element of Hendrix are you not looking at? His chord progerssions were amazing, way ahead of his time.
You're not a pro guitar player at all. You're just being silly now. Hendrix was ahead of his time in 1969 NOT 2009! Hendrix was a VERY sloppy rhythm player & rarely ventured outside the pentatonic scale. Don't recall Hendrix sweep picking or tapping etc.
I am pro. Sweep picking is just a trick. That trurd-sack Yngwie is big into that, and he sucks. The most banal player of all time. He just memorizes scales and plays them as fast as he can, that is not music.
Stop being silly. Guitarists claim many other guitarists to be the best. It all depends what interview you read. hendrix himself stated the Billy Gibbons was the best. I disagree with that too
Hendrix was just being nice when he said that about Gibbons. He also told Randy California he was the best as well. He actually gave the name "Randy California" to Randy California.
I both, respect the art of Dali and Picasso and I have no comment on that...but, I agree with you. Pollock(and similar people like him) is REALLY a joke.
this list is very poorly chosen

actually Caravaggio's real name was Michelangelo Merisi, Caravaggio was just a kind of nickname that came from the hometown of his parents.

@inMYtimeOFneed92 in fact he was known as Michelangelo Merisi from Caravaggio XD

Dali is a half-arse Picasso. Pollock was original. Pollock didn't do just 'drip paintings'. His other work is very good as well.
