I don't think it was that bad! It's easy to say that now when everything is in HD (even my contacts, seriously. No lie), but back in the 90s, I'm sure this was pretty good. I remember being wowed by the special effects. Granted, I was a kid, but still. I think they did a great job with what they had at the time.

'Are You Afraid of the Dark'... I remember this. It was pretty much just a more violent, and slightly more scary version of 'Goosbumps' (the TV series, not the books) with the same preteen audience and cheesy special effects, both of which were kiddy rip offs of 'Tales From the Crypt', which was just a rip off of 'Tales From the Dark Side'.... What do you mean it's a "mask for weak storytelling" ?? These people cranked out seven seasons of episodes with storytelling. However, it *was* a kid's show! I watched it when I was four and five with friends and it scared us at the time! Now I watched it and laugh. Of course they needed effects! It was a children's show. I don't remember any kids ever grumbling about the quality of the effects--they just loved the show because it was good storytelling to them. :)

Yeah, this show definitely had good story telling. Even today some of the stories are still really good. The acting wasn't perfect, but then again, it was a kids show. And one that was successful enough to have that many seasons. People these days just don't get that shows back then weren't about special effects. :)
