Oooh, you could wrap some lead onto the shank then cover it with food colored glue -- instant mottled egg pattern. That'd be a lot easier than working with glo-bug yarn.

They float fine. I used a #1o streamer hook.

I also wrapped one with gold colored wire and made a wet fly.
