"knots" is actually short for "nautical miles per hour", so you can use it in the same way as "miles per hour", but you have to factor in that a nautical mile is longer than a standardized mile, so the ratio isn't 1 to 1 (I think 3 "knots" is close to 6 M.P.H., you'd have to look it up to be sure).

And before you respond: A. Yes I'm a nerd for knowing this, but more importantly, B.  Now you know this if it actually becomes important in the future.
