The President wants to create competition against an ongoing monopoly (healthcare) which is terrorizing millions of people who live here. Premiums are at an all time high. The President wants to create competition against an ongoing monopoly (healthcare) which is terrorizing millions of people who live here. Premiums are at an all time high. Insurance companies are the devil here, choosing to do what they want and when they want, which is why I have a hard time understanding why anybody has a problem with the president's plan.
I also want to say that the level of getting "good" healthcare will rise. Competition means that I can choose, which is what we want.

switzerland has mandatory private healthcare, but they have heavy regulation ensuring that all can afford it. no one complains about the swiss healthcare system, and no doctor nor insurer is going broke. they might have solved that problem.

The president doesn't draft this legislation, so how can he make statements with any certainty about a bill(s) that is constantly changing? And how would fining families up to $3,800 if they don't purchase health insurance not be considered a tax on the middle class?

the fines are not part of Obama's stated plan, they were brought in by max baucus who had a former insurance exec draft the baucus version. Baucus is not Obama.
fines would be a deal breaker for me.
But the president was clear about the goal, to bring down the costs of medical coverage. Since he has plainly stated his goal, and the fines (which again are NOT part of his plan) are the opposite of that goal, the issue is a non-starter.
Dems and reps must oppose fines on citizens.

A non-citizen or visitor to the US would have to pay out of pocket (or via their insurance co) for a visit to the doctor or hospital just as always.
