This was not the violin player Stephane Grapelli. The real name of the piano playe was Stephano Grapply. Two totally different people. I think. maybe, back in the day they had alot of trouble with names. Django was listed often as Jinago Renard
@ErnieHollerhagen Why is that hard to believe? Many great players are self taught and then try to polish it off by going to a conservatory.. In the end, everyone is 'self-taught'
I love this, I've been tracing all the clips and recordings of Stephane's piano playing. He was such a great man. Interestingly, there is a clip of him playing for Michel Petruccianni on his documentary (Michel's) and a glimpse into Stephane's violin case, which I thought was so neat! anyway, thanks for posting
this is a great recording indeed. timeless beauty. youtube content is expanding quickly, sometimes i wonder where people get it from. there's so much guitar manouche to be found these days it almost shocks me
Rapelli is outstanding..very often people who are gifted in one artistic discipline are gifted in others..Rapelli is one of those..Django and he are fortunate to have played with one another and found a resonant musical bond!

It's hard to believe but Grappelli was self-taught on violin and piano and could play well before he went to a Paris conservatory.

If I could find my vinyls, I have that track. Was it called 'You and Me'? It was issued in the 70s/80s on a compilation. One of my fave albums.

This is very unique piece. I've never heard it, I knew, that Grappelli played piano but never heard it. Thank you very much for this gem.
