There are loads of immigrants in the US and Canada who don't speak the official language(s), and many of them are being forced to conform. Why not show the outsiders that we want to communicate with them, too?

You are wrong. Geography is what makes this entire equation different. Europeans, Asians, and Middle Easterns are caught off from their homeland which made it much easier for them to assimilate. (Unlike Mexico, and the bordering states).
I could care less about the immigrant issue. Because the nation-state as an institution is in decline, and soon there will be no more countries.
