This is incredible. I do thank you for uploading all of this. Exceptional. I sang Christine (still do to practice the high e above c in "phantom" song) - and have sung excerpts with various tenors with local orchestras. What I would have given to have sung it with MC!!
Crawford's decision to sing the Phantom not as an operatic sounding role as he does at 7:44, was brilliant, even though he obviously could, as we can hear in this very brief demonstration. Of course his hand movements and smooth body language also defined his Phantom forever, and raised the bar so high for all his successors.
3:29-3:52....Seriously, I really want to keep Maria Bjornson's costume sketches, frame it, and hang it on my wall at home.....they are true works of art!!!!
How many people catch Crawford's rich, beautiful, operatic voice at 7:45 when he demonstrates how he didn't want to sing it. Although he did warm up singing operatic arias. He had the courage to sing it differently when all subsequent Phantoms sang the role in a more operatic form. MC could have done the same, and his 'operatic' voice is even better than the others. His portrayal was was even more poignant with his choice of vocal style and timbre.
I know what Michael Crawford means about the Phantom's walk being catlike....to me it's more like a panther that's ready to pounce. Interestingly, when I look at both John Cudia (the Phantom I saw in New York) and Ramin Karimloo, they both remind me of panthers in terms of the way they look.....I wonder if they both sort of aquired that look from doing this role!!! :)
I'm glad the sensuality of this work is recognized and too bad it's toned down for the kiddies and old ladies. Sure he's aroused by being close to Christine at last. When he says "sing for meeee!" in the preceding scene, I think he's having an orgasm hearing her sing for him at last. I sure hope so, poor guy.
@fiyero24601 I can completely see your meaning. But if all of the phantom phans you are, i have been researching, and they had made a sequel, about a year or 6 months ago, called Love Never Dies, They did have sex... because the conflict is Christine's and soo said Raoul's Child.. who is exactly like the phantom
Don't want to see the characters and their story butchered for future generations?
Then be appalled to know that in Lloyd Webber's unwelcome sequel, entitled LOVE NEVER DIES, which is based on a flop novella by Frederick Forsyth, the Phantom no longer composes opera but trashy vaudeville while not being a bartender, Christine sleeps around, Meg becomes a topless dancer who murders Christine and Raoul becomes an alcoholic and wife abuser.
Does the Phantom carry Christine to bed in all stagings? It seems silly to leave her on the floor. He carries her in the movie version but the timing is so off it doesn't come off.
The libretto is chock full of erotica. For example, the lyric "slowly, gently, night unfurls it's splendor. Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender" is a phallic reference. In No Turning Back, Christine sings of "the sleeping bud burst into bloom" refers to her anticipated "deflowering." I'm fanning myself as I write this and I'm 62! Come on folks, it's the heart of the romance of the story.
I couldn't understand what they musicians were saying, what is the title of the song that is 'Notoriously difficult to play'. I love that song and i would really like to know the title.
@Zukoluver5 In the movie, it's the violin solo that starts the "In Sleep he sang to me" portion of lines again. In the show, it's a bleed in violin solo from the rehearsal from the piano that played itself and the rehearsal of Don Juan Triumphant.
Those two little lines "close your eyes start a journey to a strange new world/ leave all thoughts of the life you knew before" Just melt my soul and give me chills. Just the tone quality of his voice and his intensity...oooh, gotta love him!
OMG and I thought I was sick minded, thats just ridiculous, "I've always felt that he gets an erection here" what is going on in that womans head :D haha
I love how this clip starts out with sexuality and psychology Lesson 101.
And as much as my perspective has been, ah, enhanced(?) by Gillian's comment, I think it also stands to reason that the Phantom, Erik, was still only human.
I like your sexuality and psychology 101 comment lol. its so true! I also agree w/ your comment about Erik being only human. It's also great to see Michael as a normal person lol
But hey, any normal person would have a bunch up pent-up sexual frustration after a lifetime of social neglect (read this as: I love Susan Kay's "Phantom").
Lon Chaney, Sr. will always be my Face of the Phantom, but Crawford...mmm...Crawford's his VOICE.
It's terrible. I went to see the Phantom last week, and when that part of Music of the Night came up, all I was thinking of was the Phantom with a hard one *facepalm* Thank you Gillian....
@Melissa9876543210 The Phantom of the Opera [the show itself] is like a strip club for women with the Phantom up against those bars like a stripper is to a strip pole!
According to Michaels autobiography and his girlfriends Michael definetly understands sex and the sexual part of this role VERY WELL! I love how Michael and Gillian talk about this character!!!
@thereisnophantom Heck yes! I like to think they got it on after the final abduction. When he tells her, "an eternity of THIS before your eyes" he's not referring to his face. He had begun to disrobe and in true Victorian fashion, she swoons. Poor Raoul breaks the spell, she comes to her senses, and her love turns to hate.
Did the words get mixed up at 7:30 or something??

Saw PTO at the Pantages (Los Angeles) this weekend...all I could think of during that scene was, "Does he have a boner?"
It didn't help that the singer was practically slurping his lines. O__o
