Ritchie didn't do drugs. As a matter of fact I have a dvd interview where Ian Gillian and Ian Paice said they never did drugs but they did drink a lot of booze. I also read where Ritchie stated to an interviewer that He would drink down to a certain point on the label of a bottle of booze in his dressing room b4 the show and that it would help him feel relaxed b4 he hit the stage.
ritchie took too much speed on that day i mean his guitar sounds awfull compared to his later performances the early 80,s were blackmores worst period since blackmores night in my opinion his best days were with deep purple 1969 to 75 and rainbow with dio
at this time Blackmore was just boring to watch, Blackmore in Machine Head era was so different, he used to do a great improvisation, well at least he recovered in The Battle Rages On or did he?
backing tapes on this? Foolish statement if there ever was one! I am to thank for this video being seen here, as I am the one who unleashed it to the masses, thanks to a second party from the guy holding the camera here. I am the third one to ever own this great 35mm footage.
How can anyone think Blackmore was pissed off with Gillan that night? Just before Child in Time, after Lazy, you can see him applauding Gillan when IG was shouting threats at a bouncer! See elsewhere on YouTube for the footage.
RItchie's looks pissed at the the guitar. He's playing more agressive than usual and stops playing, just lik ehe is punishing the strings. Plus, he's got the guitar cable over his shoulder. o_o 4:08
Blackmore never was the most consistent of guitarists in those days, but this solo is truly abysmal.
He is a much better musician and writer today than he was when he was in Deep Purple, and I think that is because he is happier with the music he is now playing. Just watch the solo from Shadow of the Moon from this same user’s channel, and see what I mean.
His wife is a great singer - perfect for that kind of music - and that brings out the best in him.
I saw this tour back in 84 in Boston and when they played this song it was incredible, u got chills down your spine. The whole concert was killer, right down to the purple lasers they used during the song 'Perfect Strangers'.
well something wasnt right with ritchie the solo was not good at all but luckily as that guy in bill and ted said he does get better check out his child in time solo from 1993 with deep purple much more like it but it does prove even he is human and is not always perfect
Some believe that around this time, he was experimenting with "rhythm solos", but this was total shit for sure...Number one fan still, but damn that was bad
boy id have to say this solo sounds the same after 30 sec..... fast distorted ..incoherent......hes just grasping for notes hoping it works ... and it doesnt ...too bad... ive seen blackmore much much better
This isn't good at all, but to be fair his 80's rainbow stuff isn't that bad. Like the song Difficult To Cure or Eyes On Fire. And it's funny but his playing on PS is really good but the tour was terrible.
Blackmore's playing during this tour was probably the worst of his career. He was awesome in '91 and '93, and has been awesome ever since, but this was very much a low point.
No, no one's gonna think you're not a "true fan" if you don't like this, and speaking as a very devoted Blackmore fan, this is a load of crap.
That might be sloppy, but still an insanely fast one.never seen or heard fingers running that fast. that's some blistering solo by Blackmore. and unusual scales and sequences as well...
If you suggest Ian used playback, then I suggest you go to the Deep Purple hub and download every reunion gig with 'Child In Time', and every gig will proove you wrong. Only the most biased stupid and ignorant Blackmore fanatics would suggest something like that. Would be just as stupid if I said that Blackmore wore a wig and still is...
To all of you complaining - rightfully so - about Ritchie here take I look at the audio of the Child In Time solo I posted, from Essen 1993 and if you have any criticisem about that please do post! I doubt anyone will, however!
So it's what i've supoussed... Gillan HAD the high rang in the '83-'84. Proove of that its the 'Born Again' Album + tour. In '85 all draws back...sadly no?
Gillan had a cold this night, I have the complete live recording. Anyone can have a bad day, even a vocal legend such as Gillan. Both he and Ritchie was probably drunk as well. There are at least no bad blood between Gillan and Blackmore here, i't simply just not one of their best performances on the reunion tour. Thi "rubbish" type of playing is what Ritchie used to do on the 1987/88 tour, when he had started to get bored of the reunion thing. Ritchie was usually brilliant back in 1984/85.
Gillan has sung 'Child In Time' Live always- He could do it really well back in the 80's...not like in the 70's, but still very well. In 1993 it was not so good, but in 1994/95 he did it well again, but Satriani and later Morse played guitar along with the highest notes, which Gillan struggled to hit at the time, which is why it was dropped from their set. The band played it briefly on the 2002 tour for some dates, basicly the same as in 1995 (Bombay Calling), before it was permanently shelved.
Need more speed! Sorry buddy!!! Ritchie is the1st one who play speed in hard rock or heavy metal history & ever known as the fastest world guitarist during that time until it became madly & uncontrol followed by 80's generation guitarist u know that! Ritchie is good in album solo & more better in live solo. His spontaeous, creative, innovative & always come out with new bunch of melodious & licks. His not like most guitarist doing the same old thing like reading the same old book all the time...
So Ian lost the edge of his range around '85. Stupid cameraman doesn't film Gillan hitting those notes.
As for Blackmore, he is in a way legendary but in another way also a less awesome guitarplayer, it's good if you like to improvise the whole deal if you can make it a good solo. I've heard mostly less good live-solo's from Blackmore (in this song). The album-solo still sounds the best for me from all the live things I've heard so far.
This type of "rubbish" playing was what Ritchie would do on the 1987/88 'House Of Blue Light' Tour, not the 'Perfect Strangers' tour, Ritchie was usually on fire during that reunion tour, before he got bored of it all.
Gillan's work in Black Sabbath was the end, the very sad end of his great voice. Operation on th neck, overload of his voice... But Blackmore besides became much better: practice makes perfect!
Actually Gillan had troath surgery before his stint with Black Sabbath, which is why he shelved the whole Ian Gillan Band/Gillan band of his. Age and smoking/drinking took it's toll as well, but his voice was still very good and still is, if you look at the age of the man...63 now. His voice is FAR from what it used to be, yet he is a vocal legend. This was a bad night, I have the complete live recording, Gillan was drunk and had a soar throat and a cold, and Blackmore was drunk and bored.
Sounds like Ritchie is at a different concert than the rest of the band, doing his own thing... very strange, okay, the mixing is pretty stuffed but it's hardly recognisable as the same toon???
So many bands sounded better in the late 60's and 70's than when they performed live in the 80's. The older the vid / audio the better!!!
