Both sims have their merits. I've just bought A-10C from DCS and I now have the graphs of LOMAC with realism of AF. As long as there's free air, that's where you'll find me.
For me, Lock-On has two main advantages over Falcon that result in my flying it many times more. First, it has the F-15C, which is, has been, and will remain forever the King of all fighters. Second, Lock-On has a very good feeling of flight. You get a sense of speed, altitude, angle of attack, etc. It's like the difference between driving a bullet train and a Porsche. One is much more intellectually challenging, but the other reminds you why you wanted to drive fast things to begin with.
@JETZcorp F-16 will fly circles around a F-15 all day long, the only 2 things the 15 has on a 16 is speed, only because of its 2 engines and it can carry a little bit more ordinance due to the extra power. It doesnt have the agility of a 16 and thats the bread and butter of a fighter.
@orbas88 The power of the 15 also gives it a slight edge in the vertical, and they are actually substantially more capable at high altitudes in the 30,000ft range because of the high thrust and the variable-geometry intakes that can adjust to the different air conditions. The Eagle really makes its money in BVR though, where it's got a much better radar and consistently gets new upgrades first (AESA radar, JHMCS, AIM-9X, etc). WVR is important, but BVR is more important in the 21st century.
I think DCS: Balck Shark & A-10C Warthog PWNs every simulator. Especially the Warthog. Excellent graphics, avionics and more realistic than anything else on market and a really hard game on realistic setting, but still you have the option to switch to game mode and just fly and enjoy the game.
the best is lock-on fc 2.0 not a game but only a light SIM.... nr2 is falcon more realistic in some ways but graphic look like shit.. is´t very bad and a lots of details you dont need :) falcon is very bad software.. run like shit on win7... but i like both SIMS
I enjoy both sims. I think Lock on has more eye candy and it looks great but if you are looking for realisim, it's Falcon AF hands down. Wouldn't it be great if the two sims could mesh, damn what a game that would be! Great vid.
Too me the biggest thing is flight models, I don't need to know how to manually lock a agm65 or work 5 different radar modes, but the feeling of flight is why I play fight sim, and lock on has a much deeper flight model
Flight model of F-16 was build on base on data from aerodynamic tunnel. I really can't imagine what should be more precise :) sorry. AF give me as realistic flight model as was measured in aerodynamic tunel with F-16 model in scale 1:4. Real avionics is a plus to it - that's the feel from the real flight ... no to just pressing the TAB to lock enemy airplane :)
Most pictures of Falcon 4.0 are made while flying the F16 A. Lock on is nice, but i love to switch the different Radar modes, manual lock on with the AGM65 and the realistic radio communication, especially with AWACS, the dynamic campaign and, and, and. Falcon is for sure the best. EF2000 comes close, not that realistic , but also very nice!
Here is the difference between Lock-On and Falcon. After playing Lock-On, would you be able to sit inside of a real Mig-29 pit with an instructor and be able to show him how to start it up from cold, turning on electrical, hydraulic, electronic counter measures, weapons, navigation and other systems? Would you know where ever switch, button, knob and lever would be for those systems? Nope.
Falcon and it's 700+ page manual is not for the faint of hearted. Lock On is nothing more than a game.
fucking true, thats why Microprose became bankrupt. Falcon 4.0 was to hard to learn, only a few bought it. Remember F15 SE? F14 Fleet Defender? Their games have always been very realistic, but the time of such games were over and Falcon 4.0 was a commercial fail. Sad but true...
@VpR81 hmm however Allied force was not. Hey and any good sim takes a while to learn but you can play it for years afterwards without it getting stale, unlike a lot of shooters. The time in the limelight maybe, but the time of simulations over? no way in hell if you ever look into the simulation forums. and Simulations got the strongest of all comunities, who else could´ve pulled of the Falcon Curse or Janes F/A-18? As we say: "A simulation is not a game, its a hobby!" *g*
You won't be able fly with MiG-29 :) ... as you don't switch engine, radar, weapons by one button :) that's the main difference between AF and Lockon - realistic avionics not nice graphics for children.
@eifczar You're wrong. The advantage of Falcon over Lock On is more detailed avionics, Falcon also has dynamic companies, - and that is all. Lock On has more complex physical model of planes, missiles, and other elements. Lock On has much better graphics. When you fly in Falcon, it is like going by rail: no pushes, no real physical moves. Lock On is much better, and Lock On Flaming Cliffs 2 is incredibly real.
lock on flaming cliffs with a simpit is most fun. i use saitekx x52 and pedals , track ir . widescreen tft and my hombuilt pseudo cockpit. i use a touchsreen with touchbuddy and a modified sharkoon rushpad and some switches that make the whole thing backlit. etc. its not a hyper realistic pit but its way more immersive than pushing only buttons or to use the mouse. i mostly play lomac but i also have falcon. both are great - but for me lomac has the edge. :) great vid btw :D
Im thinking about buying LOMAC, but they have 2 boxes(i think) one with the A-10 on the cover and one with a Mig-29, but the one with the mig-29 says "air combat flight simulation" is that the same? Thats my problem, PLZ HELP!
I have both games and its a toss up for me. I guess it depends on what aircraft I want to that moment. F-16 or F-15? A-10 or SU-33? Hmmm...... so many decisions......
I enjoyed Falcon AF quite a lot but unfortunately the bugs got the best of it :( Also, flying only an E bleeding F-16 got old. I have yet to try Lock On

Allied Force was a game that never really lived up to the hype. It tried too much and it always seemed it got dogged down with bugs.
Lock-oN may be a bit more limited as a game, but it excells in what it set out to do.
