DB, you are correct. I should have pointed out that the sides and ends should be perpendicular after you have made your rough cut.

On the edge jointing example, it might be square to the faces, but you're not guaranteeing that the jointed edge is at a 90-degree angle to the perpendicular edge of the board. You'd need to use a reference square to set the track up.
