  • wind excited a normal mode of vibration i guess...

  • Wow!

Great example of positive feedback and harmonic oscillation!

  • Luckily, no passengers were killed in the incident.

  • ;'P

  • lol

  • I don't quite understand flutter what did actually happen?

  • The airplane's wings started to vibrate violently until the airplane was ripped apart from the vibrations.

  • @dalebu2 it tried to act like a butterfly and failed

  • wing spar = epic FAIL ;)

  • Lol that's what you get for slapping a powerful engine on a weak airframe and fly at low altitude. Did anyone find out what the topspeed was for that plane before it broke?

  • Alright, who's the prankster who programmed the plane to start trying to flap its wings like a bird. :P

  • Cool! Amazing shot of that split second destructive force....

  • Excellent video, and information, thanks!

Tought loss, but great learning oppportunity and it is good to hear that it was very strong in other elements of the competition!

    Kudos!

  • Does anyone know whose plane this is? I'm thinking about doing a project to recreate this.

  • This is a yearly competition held by SAE International for engineering students. This plane is from Wright State University. Yes it did earn the award for best crash but it also won the competition (the backup airplane did) because it carried the highest weight ratio of payload. This airplane was made by myself and 3 friends.

  • Spectacular demonstration of flutter.

  • it DID earn the best crash award... :P

  • coool
