The term 'heavy barrel' comes from the fact that the original version was water cooled. The water cooling jacket was heavy as hell, but being actively cooled meant that the barrel didn't have to be super thick. The lighter and more mobile air-cooled version needs much, MUCH thicker barrel walls to soak up heat without failing quickly (along with an easily replaceable barrel.) Same difference between the M1917 and M1919. The AN/M3 aircraft gun does have a lighter barrel and receiver, though.

As it IS fun to fire full auto in long cycles. They tell you to fire 3-5 round burst for maximum efficiency. Unless you are really hammering something to either provide covering fire or to take out vehicles... things like that.

Is there a big problem with jamming, especially in the desert? I've fired a SAW and (this was a gun shop rental) had quite a few stoppages, but those were easily cleared. I would imagine mil-spec .50's and SAW's are quite a bit better maintained, yeah?
