I saw a DC-10 dropping retardant on the Gap Fire behind my place last weekend it was awesome. The C-130's & P-3's & helicopters were impressive too but the DC-10 was incredible.
The Camera aircraft is a Rockwell OV-10 "Bronco", a "60s" era COIN aircraft. It has obviously been demilitarised for fire fighting duties! I believe it's a fairly hazardous job being a "Water Bomber Pilot" or even a crew member!!
I'd think you'd really have to be careful with those big planes what with the hills and mountains, violent updrafts, thermals etc. Wouldn't want to do any violent maneuvers with those big airframes.
how come theres no videos on the 747, anyone know where i can see video on this bad boy.

October 22, 2007 Lake Arrowhead fire. All the Phoschek blew away in the planes vortex and cross winds as pedicted. Fire 100....DC10 zero.
SACKTECH 4 years ago
the point was to get the fire retardent on the ground so that the fire doesnt spread further, not on the fire itself...duhh

Wish I was flying that DC-10

that DC-10 look so cool dropping that fire
fighting chemical. it is a great idea using
big jets to drop so much at once and really
snuff out the fires more quickly.
You should check out the video of a Boeing
747 that is modified for doing this!
Incredible!

Since when does a dc-10 have turbo-prop engines? The cockpit isn't right either.

Yes, I realized that after posting my comment. Didn't watch the whole video before posting. Ooops.

Watch the video - he's filming the -10 from an observer plane.

I don´t think Jet engined airplanes are adequate to this kind of flying. It just is not efficient.

instead of retiring old aircraft, they should all be used to put out fires like this! hats off!

A lot of the USFS planes are old military. This DC10 is a new bird designed just for firefigiting though.
