Wow, this story is great! And it's so true too... When people are taken by surprise they yell explicitly in their mother tongue... The average person here does not think so profoundly about topics like these or at least expresses an interrest in them. But this is the kind of stuff i think about almost on a daily basis. It's one of the reasons that foreign travel appeals to me so much.
What if the guy who was pricked had just said "oooooooooooo aaaaaaaaaaa eeeeeeeee". Would Tenali cause him more bodily harm then to find out his mother tongue? What if the guy was really an orphan who was taught many different langauges in his childhood but there was no information about his parents? What if the guy was wise enough to know about Tenali's tricks in advance? Any comments?
@MrSigma I've thought about these possible outcomes too. I think there are even people today who don't really have a mother tongue and maybe grew up from birth speaking two or three languages simaltaneously. My wife wants to teach our children bahasa Indonesia and her mother tongue bahasa Sunda so they will be growing up speaking at least three. I could imagine it would be difficult to determine if any language will be more dominant than the others.

@hemantmehndi - South Indian accent is much more better than anyother part of India. lol... especially more good than north Indian... aduvise, becausu... lol
