  • OK im going to post this comment so i dont repeat myself......Mallard is'nt the only static A4 loco in the world. For those of you who dont know, there are 6 in the world. 4 in the UK and 1 in the USA and 1 in Canada. There is no point bringing Mallard back to life if theres 3 already running. Some might say that they want to see her running with the Valances on. Even if she did run again which is highly unlikely the valances would be taken off anyway because of maintenence.

  • i agree, and the bitterne is residing on the watercress line in alton/arelsford/ropley in hampshire.

however forgive me for being out of the know but what are the valances?

im guessing the plates that cover the wheels.

  • can't they build a replica to use on the main line.

mallard looks lonely being left out whilst the others are steamed up.

  • ...what do you need a replica for? Mallard wont steam again end of. NRM's prioritys lie with 4472 then the next job is 6229 which will hopefully steam in 2018!

  • WOW I never thought that they would move mallard but they can. It seems kind of sad seeing Sir Nigel Greseley, Bittern and Union Of South Africa in steam and the just seeing Mallard sitting their lifeless with no steam. They need to restore her.

  • Mallard isnt the ONLY a4 to be a static loco you know. 60008 and 60010 lie static across the sea..

  • why isint the mallard steamed up ??

  • Because she would need a full overhaul before being allowed to do so. Locomotives are given boiler certificates which expire, Often you get a locomotive run for 7-10 years providing it has had good maintenance and is in good running order. After expiry the locomotive has to be taken to bits, boiler tubes removed etc, then new parts made and put back together which is a lengthy and expensive process. Mallard isn't really needed in steam though as there are three other A4's running.

  • These are some of the most beautiful locomotives ive ever seen.

  • can mallard move under on its own?

  • No. as has been said elsewhere, the boiler is probably no longer certified. Don't forget, a locomotive steam boiler is in effect a large bomb on wheels, which is why the rules are so strict. If you visit the NRM in york, you will see the "Flying Scotsman" undergoing a FULL rebuild.

  • @smiffy1071

Flying Scotsman isn't undergoing a full rebuild. It's a overhall. If it was a rebuild it would be just building a brand new Steam loco, like Tornado.

Allthough alot of the parts are being replaced, it will still be the same loco, if they rebuilt it would not be the same loco

  • I was lucky enough to travel on the coronation and see all 4 lined up-I keep going over all the great vids people have posted of a truly remarkable event-many thanks

  • i would geuss this was on th sunday as union of south africa is not their unfortunatley could not make it back to york on sunday due to a hot axelbox coming back, luckily i saw all 4 on the saturday i will never forget it

  • Yeah, this was sunday. It was still a great day though :)

  • Great vid! I saw three A4s at the LNER Festival on the NYMR in March & April (60007, 60009 & 60019), great, powerful locos.

  • I couldn't miss it! It was such a great opportunity!

  • Wasn't it just! You might be interested to see one of my other videos, 'Preserved British Rail Trains - a tribute by TrainBusJaguar', it's a slideshow of some photos I've taken on the NYMR over the past year.

  • Cool, I will do.
