I think this is a smart tempo to take...the long lines are more clearly delineated, and unlike the string quartet version (or orch version), that is a much more urgent consideration. Vocal color and intonation and interpretation is top-notch, as is the usual case at Augustana.
@haugwi01 hahaha tell THAT to the conductor of the Vienna Boys choir. To each his own I suppose. I say let college students sound youthful and sprightly. Let the 40-year-olds in the church choir sound hooty.
A very talented group indeed... No matter how many times I may listen to this reguardless of what mood I am in, it still brings a tear to my eye. The beauty and power in the voice of so many brings me to my knees. I only wish I could have been there in person to have experienced it.
It was an incredible privilege to have sung in this choir in the mid-seventies when Don Morrison was the conductor. It is moving to hear that the Augustana College Choir tradition lives on to this day.
Actually...a mature sound is a clear crisp sound that includes vocal focus and precision...and great breathe energy and vowel shapes...and a full tone...all of which are included in their vocals. This is fantastic...and their ability to stay on their note while so much is going on around them...and and half step intervals and the minor notes...fantastic...this is so wonderful. I was looking at going to Augustana...and this makes me wanna look harder. This is so good. The blend is amazing.
I am proud to say that I was there for this performance, along with many other performances during their tour of Scandinavia. It was definately an experience I will never forget. I miss Sweden so much and look back on these videos from time to time just to think back on those great times. Thank you for the great memories.

I sang 2nd tenor in Henry Veld's Augustana Choir from 1964-1966, and it's great to hear the choir again. I'm a bit disappointed that the "instrument" now sounds more nasal, like St. Olaf...more strident...less mature.
A choir should never be judged based on some notion that "maturity" (whatever that word means) is a desirable or even necessary element to choral singing. I know that the Augustana Choir does not strive for a "mature" sound, but instead values focus and precision. The Augustana Choir's sharp diction and meticulous attention to detail is exciting to the ear and brings the text a fresh breath of life. A "mature" sound would only muddy the invigorating, impelling timbre of the group.

Incredibly challenging piece, pulled off splendidly. Shame it's so fast, I'd love to rest in some of those harmonies much longer.
