  • what is the jumper car used for in between the locos for? is that a auxiliary power unit?

  • It's a radio control car - they were often used by Southern in the 70's and 80's for mid-train locos to receive throttle/braking instruction.

  • Yeah, a radio control car. They used to be on about 90% of the freight trains rolling through the Piedmont in North Carolina in and around Gastonia. I refer to this area as MID-TRAIN HELPER heaven :)

  • Man Norfolk Southern freight train lashups were better before the Dash-9s arrived. Now your patically see 2 or 3 Dash-9s on every frieht train

  • Love it! i like any thing with a NS train in it really... LOL

  • Cool stuff, glad to see some 'older' railraod clips posted on here!!

  • Cool, one of the jumper cable/spacer cars!

  • Actually it is a GP 38. That engine has the required radio gear on it to run the mid train helpers.

  • GP9's I think....
