Were the highhoods on this train, ex- Southern?

Its a radio control car. they use it for auxiliary power for mid train helpers. Man those were they good ol days when they used alot of power.

what is the jumper car used for in between the locos for? is that a auxiliary power unit?

It's a radio control car - they were often used by Southern in the 70's and 80's for mid-train locos to receive throttle/braking instruction.

Yeah, a radio control car. They used to be on about 90% of the freight trains rolling through the Piedmont in North Carolina in and around Gastonia. I refer to this area as MID-TRAIN HELPER heaven :)

Man Norfolk Southern freight train lashups were better before the Dash-9s arrived. Now your patically see 2 or 3 Dash-9s on every frieht train

Actually it is a GP 38. That engine has the required radio gear on it to run the mid train helpers.
