This movie is one of the greatest movie in France with Pierre Brasseur and director: Georges Franju (Ce film est l'un des plus grand film en France avec Pierre Brasseur et metteur en scène: Georges Franju)
Instead of "transplanting" faces, couldn't the doctor have given his maimed daughter a new face thru plastic surgery? His efforts were probably always unsuccessful due to his daughters's body rejecting the new skin. That's what happens a lot after transplants of any kind. After all is said & done, it doesnt' really matter. It's just a movie. Though the doctor is truly a beast to kill young women just so his daugher could have a new face! An evil man!
The Criterion Collection version of this film is the uncut or should I say the least cut version there is available. The end of this scene goes on long enough for you to see the bloody mess of what is underneath the skin as it is lifted off but cuts pretty quickly. I believe it did run longer than that and even Criterion could not find a totally uncut version of it. I paid $29.95 for my copy of it and I think it is worth it because I like the movie a lot.
I just got through watching this in my Film Theory class. All of us agreed that this was probably the most graphic and disturbing scene we had ever seen in a black and white move. Especially one that came out in 1969. However, we all also agreed that this is a brilliant movie.
This movie is really brilliant. The pretty gore of sickness.

The "face-lift" here, in the unedited version, is longer and more sickening. You see quite a bit more scalpel-work.
Just an observation; I'm not saying that I crave unexpurgated gore.
