Hey, I understand fully how coils actually get burned out:
When the glue melts or burns (the smoke before the pop XD) then the wires are able to freely rub against each other and cause friction. Then, after that the wires either melt or break from being moved so fast and randomly.
Copper is good for certain things, and so is aluminum.
Aluminum is for SPL most of the time... the reason that voice coils blow is actually from the glue and bobbin melting or catching fire.
@ExpertOfSound your pretty close mate. what happens is when the glue melts then all of the wires aren't seperated and they all fuse to one giant copper clump and your impedance drops like a rock and then that thing is toast.
Yeah if you let your coils get up to 660°C (melting point of aluminum).
More often than not, heat-related coil failures are due to deformation/melting of the coil bobbin, or melting/burning of the insulation on the coil (temperature of which depends on what the windings are coated with, many materials are used, with different temperature ratings).
In other words a coil's temperature resistance depends on the materials used to form the bobbin, and the insulation and glues used in forming the coil, not on the type of metal the coil windings are actually made of.
@shaolinxdanger you are wrong.....copper coils can take heat but burns out faster...aluminum kapton can take the heat, and will take a long time for it to burn out
Copper is heavier and has a higher packing density in the gap (more BL). We used it in this case for a lower Fs (more low-end extension). The standard Nightshade uses an aluminum coil which is better for SPL.
copper seems to have good sq

copper coil takes heat better, aluminum coil doesn't.
