  • Actually I thought the story behind this was that they were messing around in the studio and decided to reverse a demo of I Will (I'm assuming just because they could) and liked it, and it became Like Spinning Plates, and Thom learned how to sing the lyrics to LSP as they sounded reversed. I could be completely off though.

  • I think i'd sound better with the LA version of I Will

  • loved it!

  • In the second half "I will" reversed / "Like Spinning Plates" regular, you can really hear the theory, the other way around it doesn't seem to work for me. Anyways, gonna reverse I will and listen to it that way, sounds amazing <3

  • This is genius.

  • I'm pretty sure Thom would not like this. I mean, I get it, and I understand, but it's a mess.

  • @jimmybilbo

Thom doesn't like a lot of things his fans do haha

  • @jimmybilbo it's just an experiment...

  • wheres the video from?

  • @KoSlnG From their DVD: The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth Of All Time.

  • if youre gonna post a video like this... at least make the audio sync up better. this incredible mix falls apart after one minute :(

  • God, Radiohead are the greatest band to walk to earth.

  • Headphones really do make a difference to this.

  • This song and video made me contemplate the benefits and repercussions of pursuing scientific truth.

  • holy fuck, sickk

  • watch?v=s5kl6nJWttA

  • absolutely stunning

  • Is there any way I can download the non-compressed version? I love this.

  • omg it fits perfectly :O

  • There is no way in hell that this is accidental or coincidental. (I guess that goes without saying and probably doesn't need to be said at all, but it was the first thought that came to mind lol.)

Radiohead are geniuses. Frighteningly, existentially aware geniuses that slap us in the face brutally with an emotionally resonant means of forcing us to face unpleasant realities through their paradoxically beautiful music. But geniuses nevertheless.

  • I just listened to just "Like Spinning Plates" backwards, and I thought I was the first to notice it. Fucking internet.

  • Can someone tell, what i hapening in this video?

  • @Merzbowxnoise life.

  • your tax dollars at work

  • I wish someone would upload an mp3 of this.

  • you are a genius

  • Comment removed

  • this is incredible. i also really like how it shows the babies right when the line "little baby's eyes" comes in.

  • nice job mate :>

  • impressive

  • take out the guitar in I Will and it would work much better. The rhythm doesn't work. LSP(B) is very pulsating, the guitar for I Will doesn't work with it very well

  • This is one of my favourite songs.

  • This has got to be one of the most beautifully haunting songs i have ever heard.

  • thank you so much for uploading this bro

  • i thought everyone knew that like spinning plates was created when thom heard a reversed version of i will playing in the rehearsal room and he said damn thats better than the right way around and they built a song out of that

  • Isn't this genious. :D

  • This is kind of sick

  • i had read there was aa connection in the songs in one of their books, both songs r beautiful and brilliant... thanks

  • genius

  • Radiohead makes my head almost explode.

  • whats this video?

  • Who the would dislike this video? Probably bears with claws too big to be competent with computers. And I swear if you thumb this up, I will kill eat your children.

  • @cannabisabuser How does one "Killeat" children? And what if I don't have children? And other than the part of killeating children, you're comment wasn't that interesting, so why else would I thumbs it? XP

  • Because bears :(

  • @cannabisabuser I love bears! XD

  • the video is amazing!

  • Great song! Them two merged together makes the songs sound more powerful.

  • sounds something muse will steal one of these days.

  • hearing the spinning plates bassline synced with i will was what i came here for but the second part (from about 2.26 onwards) is fucking incredible. the emotional arcs of the two songs twisting around one another, clashing so awkwardly but so clearly and beautifully, turns my spine into a viper of jelly

  • More mysterious by the second. Radiohead is ever intriguing.

  • "The song is built over the reversed backing track of an electronic version of the then unreleased "I Will" (which would later be released in a much different form on Hail to the Thief). According to Thom Yorke, in an interview with The Wire, "We'd turned the tape [of "I Will"] around, and I was in another room, heard the vocal melody coming backwards, and thought, 'That's miles better than the right way round', then spent the rest of the night trying to learn the melody." source: wikipedia

  • This is bollox.

  • i really wanted to hear this work for myself cuz i love the idea of backmasking.

so i thought when i play ike Spinning Plates' bacwards i would hear something as clear as a normal voice (like as thought thom sang the song forwards but then reversed it)

but it sound like more mumbling. and definatly not like 'i will' (played forwards)

but how did you do it? and time it when it dose it matched perfectly? when i . did you slow it down or speed it up if so by how much.

  • @buyjakeget1free I believe how Thom sang it was by singing it forwards, listening to the vocals in reverse, and then singing the reverse vocals, then reversing the reversed vocals. Yeah, I know, confusing @_@

  • no, the last bit isn't true. they had already written an early version of I Will, and Thom learned the vocals in reverse, singing it on this track.

  • The reason that the vocals are still indecipherable when you reverse the song is that thom infact sang backwards, and then reversed that.

  • Es ist doch beruhigend zu hören, dass noch andere Menschen ein solch abstraktes Gehör haben wie ich. Wunderschöner Mix! Aber bei meiner Beerdigung nähme ich "I Will" doch lieber im Original.

  • What ever happened to the kids inside??

  • wow. i almost cried watching.

  • this is the song I want played at me funeral. thats not some stab at the whole "radiohead are so depressing" lord knows how much that irrates me, its just I think this is this is the complete antithesis to songs that include the word "angel" in the title that are played at funerals. God I love this band.

  • how can I reverse video?

  • I definitely prefer the bass line from reversed spinning plates to any other track in this whole mix. bravo. bravo.

  • hauntingly beautiful

  • I wish there was track available like with both together like this...makes I will so much more powerful

  • @BlackIroni You can download audio from youtube videos from certain websites if you really want to.

  • @BlackIroni Go to Listento youtube.com and paste the URL of this video in the search bar to download the mp3 version! I agree it is spectacular.

  • this has given me goosebumps..also, i have pretty much every radiohead song ever recorded but where the hell can i get that version of i am from!!!?

  • I meant i will lol

  • i wish " i will " album version was like this... would be just amazing... i like the album version, but it could be better than just one guitar and thom singing

  • solved by formula of thom.. he release instrument representing a planning. one brain, one colour and the one instrument. *Lol

  • fANTASTIC!

  • that is one messed up video. siamese twins separated? argh

  • It's one baby and magical computers. Sorry to spoil the illusion.

  • thats ok

  • of course he knew about it. o_o

while working on I Will, Thom had the tape on backwards and heard it and figured that the melody was much better backwards than forwards.

He learned how to sing the 1st lyrics part of Spinning Plates backwards, recorded it, then put THAT backwards so it became forwards again. Lol.

But the "This just feels like..." part is recorded forwards (normally); you can tell the difference.

of course, he cant sing it like that live... :p

    I liked inlonging's post, HAHA!

  • Lol this is like the same comment I posted last year on this video lol.

  • simply the best mess of sounds i have ever herd. Thank you!

  • simply amazing

  • Dude. I am totally putting this on a cd and playing it over and over and over and over and over and over and over

  • This is pure awesomeness. Two of my favorite Radiohead songs, too. I guess it proves greatness is greatness, even in reverse!

  • amazing!

  • is esperimental music

    becase that radiohead is amazing

  • That's... really beast.

  • That was pretty kick-ass

  • Omg this is actually amazing. I think Thom Yorke actually knew about this and I was definatly intentional.

    Amazing

  • It's the same riff but backwards.. I'm pretty sure he knew about it.

  • I reckon thats why they did it. I'm not sure this is what happened, but they will of recorded spinning plates backwards and liked the chords i that order so wrote something to that. i still think its clever, though, because harmony doesnt always work both ways

  • They recorded I Will first, but then they put made it into Like Spinning Plates on Amnesiac.

  • does anyone have "i will" backwards?

  • i like the way you think......if you have sound recorder with windows XP or lower-i know that you can record anything and go to options or edit and then just click reverse at the the bottom of the list

  • wow i have no idea about spinning plates being i will reversed

  • I Love Radiohead and have always thought something about Like spinning Plates sounded like i will!!!! thank you very much for putting this on here! :)

  • And thats the real stuff, even confirmated byThom... Thats why the music lines on the bassline actually do sound excatly the same... Bottom of the line... They're Fucking Genius!!!

    Regards..

  • Thom's vocals for the song were recorded, and then reversed.Thom then learned how to sing the entire song backwards. He was then recorded while singing backwards, and with the piano part for the song played normally.

Then, the song was inverted one final time, and it is this that appears on the album Amnesiac. Radiohead used this tune once again for their song I Will from Hail to the Thief. They simply took the reversed piano track and inverted it again so that the piano was played regularly

  • and the lyrics//vocals of

"spinnig plates" sound like backwards stuff"

    buts been realesed first!?

    mystic.

    whatever radiohead are completley

    lost in sound.

    radiohead is mother.

  • of each song and played in all directions to understand it 100%.

coz somwhere i read: i will lyrics backwards sound at some parts like the hock "it feels like spinnig plates"

    wähh.

    i am confused.

also first plates is been released.

or did they hold back i will?

    sry.

    i want to know it!

  • total confusion.

i am close about gettin it.:

ok,plates backwards backround stuff and some hocks are the main direction i will goes.

so they used backround synth stuff of plates and so they got the main part for i will?

but draged the hocks for i will?

some one should make short documentary about it where the single parts would been cut out spereatly (vocals and backround.)

  • i think i understand this but i was expecting it to be something much more obvious

  • Do you have headphones or a subwoofer hooked up so that you can hear the bassline? That's a really important part to hearing the idential chord progression

  • @d3p3ch3mod3 i think they sped up the reversed "i will" for the official recording of like spinning plates or tweaked it in some way.

  • I love the transition. Its so awesome!!

  • I already knew they were supposed to be like this but I could never hear the similarities when listening to these songs but now I GET it! Thanks... sounds freaking awesome when synced like that...

  • holly shit¡¡¡ man this hears just brilliant, i knew about i will and like spinning plates. but i never heard this version. its amazing

  • The backwards/forwards thing...

They did it on purpose. they said so themselves in an interview somewhere out there

  • That doesn't make it any less awesome.

Besides, of course they did it on purpose, it's not like things like this happen accidentally.

  • If there ever was a question of whether or not Radiohead was talented...

  • Wow. That's all I can say really.

  • Yeah, um OK. Is that how you interpret "Wow"?

  • *sigh* why do people have to be such wankers just because they know things that others don't when theyre into a band like radiohead? "do some research before you get shocked" ?? im sure you were shocked when you researched, so how is this any different? tosser.

  • I do not know, I had to write an analysis paper on this song, I just hate to see peoples work mistaken in the way this video has made it to be. Its not like people have to make it obvious either.

  • I know what you mean, but it's hard to know what other people think you sound like. Even if you didn't intend to come about snob-like you just seem like it to others.

  • you two guys are so pacionated about radiohead and also a good audience, I' do like radiohead and now that I read you coment make sence why do my music sounds like it does I wanna have influence on then and u guys toch a point, but you got to be realistic in many other opinions about radiohead, they would say that all this is just waite of fucking ridicules time

  • Yeah, I have a music degree too. I know what music theory and analysis classes are about. So I guess I can be elitist too because I know shit?

  • What the hell is music theory?

  • lol really?

  • I figured it out on my own after listening to spinning plates in reverse over and over... I just started hearing the lyrics to "I Will" playing along with it and was like "why do I keep hearing this?" I didn't know it would all sync up perfectly until I heard people talking about it..

  • @kylefer

why do some radiohead fans have to be such wankers? we get it - you know everything about radiohead - but some of us only learned about this from the video. good for you man i'm sure it feels great to belittle people because they don't know everything that thom ever said.

  • @mightymellow01

please don't be put off by pretentious fans, the music is way beyond such

    concerns

  • @mightymellow01 Well I have not belittled anyone but I dont appreciate you trying to belittle me.

  • @kylefer

pretty funny that you're saying that you didn't belittle anyone. your comment:

"DUDE!! THOM YORKE SAID "LIKE SPINNING PLATES" IS I WILL IN REVERSE! OMFG!! how can people be so stupified by this."

this is but one of many comments you've made on this video. how could that possibly not be construed as belittling?

i also find it funny that after posting something like that, you could say not only that you are not belittling people, but that my comment is belittling.

  • @mightymellow01 Still dont get it do ya. Well I respect you dont take things the same way people from my region would so its cool.

  • amazing. i am officially tripped out.

  • DUDE!! THOM YORKE SAID "LIKE SPINNING PLATES" IS I WILL IN REVERSE! OMFG!! how can people be so stupified by this.

  • maybe because it sounds awesome....?

  • I am saying that are many songs that are almost a good (and normal) song when backwarded. The only thing that a band would need to do is reverse their songs until they find a good song or a almost good song and make some changes to make a new song.

  • I did, and it works now.

    Why does that always happen?

  • Is it just me, or is this video removed?

    WHY???

I LISTEN TO THIS EVERY DAY!

    PUT IT BACK!!!

  • just refresh the site;]

  • soo great

  • Green day aren't worth the shit that they lick of corporate arses.

  • @Bananaman2nd a little harsh

  • WEIRD

  • awesome.

  • Wow.......That's strange but, have sense

  • i love it - you play some bands backwards and get messages from the devil, you play radiohead backwards and you get more amazing radiohead..fantastic

  • lol great comment

  • yeah...they said that I will is the same than spinning plates... that is like spinning rebirth it was johnny idea...

  • pretty cool

  • i like Spinning Plates a vit more i think.

  • speechless staring at the monitor. 5/5

  • genius stuff man

  • sex nuts crazy kiddos. this is a fucking miracle. :)

  • DIVINEDIVINEDIVINEDIVINEDIVINE

  • holy shit. holy shit. holy shit

  • Ha!

    That's what I said too!

    XD

  • Beautiful mix!

And it went perfectly with the video!

  • danke

  • i guess thom yorke had the idea from Lennon-mcartney as he is much influenced of beatles, speccially about title Because...made by the same

  • uni versal...

  • freeking cool...

  • can i get this audio???

  • i deleted the files because no one was asking for em :/ until after i deleted them

  • ohh well

    bad luck i have

  • Make a copy of the soundtrack of this video.

  • genius.

  • I've been a radiohead fan for a couple years now and i just stumbled across this reverse sync. It's very interesting, i'm not sure i would have figured it out unless someone pointed it out. But any ways, i love this song. I just started learning the tabs today on my guitar.

  • sound's really good together

  • Ah wait, nevermind. I never knew they wrote the music to it so far before it was actually released.

  • I Will was written first, they took the electronic version of it and played it in reverse and there you have Spinning Plates. They kick around song ideas for years before releasing them, look at Nude. That is from the OK Computer years.

  • and motion picture soundtrack was written before creep!

  • Really? I Thought that was written directly for the Romeo + Juliet film... "I Might be Wrong" lol;)

  • No, thats exit music (for a film)

  • exit for a film and motion PS are my favourite of ok and kid a

  • b3p3ch3mod3, 'i will' answer, lol. Thom and co wrote 'spinning' from the reversal of 'i will'. He then plays the song liveon a piano on the 'i might be wrong' live recordings. think about the musical skill to rewrite that piece of music and transpose it to piano for that version. Understand?

  • Pakkershaw: What?

It's not hard to work out the chord pattern to the reverse of a song

    "I Will": C#min, A Maj, G#(Ab)Min

    "Like Spinning Plates": G#min, A Maj, C#min

So unless I'm misunderstanding your comment, it seems perfectly reasonable how you could "transpose" (I think you meant "arrange") Spinning plates for piano.

Not saying that Radiohead lack musical skill, it's just it's really easy to arrange it for piano

  • yeah rearranging a previous chord structure is just common arithmetic, the stuff that impresses me usual
