6 stars--not to take anything at all away from Norman Blake and Tony Rice, I think Gambetta captures the feeling this song wants to evoke better than the traditionalist versions.
You critics are way too uptight. An appropriate comment to an artists impression your " revered " tune would be " it's not my taste. " Freedom of speech is a great thing, especially when it is approached with a little class & respect.
Well, I hate to place things in boxes...because I know they don't belong...BUT....even though this guy has a nice voice...I don't really like hearing it sing "american folk tunes"....his playing is "ok"....and I hate his choice of guitar for such a genre...I have nothing against his passion and choices.....but, he's NOT an innovator......he just sort of turns classic AF into "world pop". IMHO

it is really infuriating to see people put up such retarded comments as "6/5 stars!!!!!!" on such a lame dick video. this guy turned this song from a flatpicking bluegrass classic to this sort of half-folk, totally sappy, chord driven, technically simple wishy washy bullshit. please watch the tony rice video of this song and realize that this man "changed the chords" because he couldn't actually pick the song correctly. what a fucking load of crap. if you like this shit, you suck.
Beppe Gambetta is one of the most respected guitarists out there. He played this version with Dan Crary, a legend, at Kamp Kaufman and it got the greatest amount of applause. When he is friends with Norman Blake, he can do whatever he wants to.
Ok, this version of Church street blues is not so amazing, the Tony Rice version is the best ever heard ( better than the original one by Normal Blake), but you cannot judge this guitarist by this song. Gambetta is considered all over the world one of the bast flatpicking guitarist, and if he often plays with people like Dan Crary it means he's not " a load of crap". Look at some other vedeo and you'll see a great guitarist.
Wouldn't be so hard on him. Not my fav interp, but this goes to show if you present yourself as a pro the audience will follow. think of how many gtrists on YT that are tech wizards, but you have never heard of them. A great Philosh. lesson for guitarists. Good Job
Can the guy play anything in a reasonably fast tempo. No. Can he support any claim of noteworthy creative or technical ability? No. Can he even play an accurate cover of the songs from which he "creates" his "interpretations?" No.
But he can impress some people who need inspiration, yet who do not want to over-reach their own potential.
dude i could not agree more with you. this is such a watered down, technically simple arrangement of this song- this is supposed to be bluegrass crosspicking and he's strumming three chords the whole fucking time. anyone with even a modicum of musical knowledge knows this dude is a clown who has made a name for himself with his silly affable italian charm shtick.
I like his arrangement so much I think I'll learn it.

Have you ever heard this guy play the harp-guitar. You should. Dave Grisman thought him worthy company to record an album together.
