@suzuki22girl : I'm sorry... but if you're joking or something... I ain't gettin' the punch-line. Without traction, holdin' the bang-stick wide-open (especially on a KX500) will do nothing more turn the back tire into a hole-digging machine.
@suzuki22girl : And I imagine since you were at the dunes you also had either a Paddle-tire or a soft-terrain tire too. In this vid I had an intermediate terrain tire on the rear and it just doesn't hook-up out at Jawbone. A KX500... CAN... be very forgiving, if you lug it around all day in the lower half of the RPM's and maybe ride around a gear higher than you're used to as well.
Now that I have a Soft-Terrain tire out back though... and hardpack I come across I have to tread lightly.
Making claims is useless without a vid to back it up. I'm just sayin'... I could sit at my keyboard and claim that I rode up that same hill with a skateboard. Doesn't mean it's gonna happen. But it sounds pretty amazing now doesn't it?
@kx1000man my ass i tryed that hill on my ktm 125 2 stroke in 4th and 3rd and 2nd and i counld make it and u say that u did the hole thing in 4th. and its 10 time steeper than it looks. and 1 foot of sand dosent help
@99ktm125 : Thank You! The whole problem I had this day was just shitty traction at that mid-point of the climb. I mean... at the end of the video you can see and hear the engine pulling along no problem... but the bike just wasn't going anywhere once I hit that baby-fine powdery-dust sand. I'm hopine that pretty soon I can do maint. onmy bike and get back out there just so I can try this climb again now with the IRC M5B tire out back. Big difference in the soft stuff.
@TheGDizzo I live in South Africa and we go riding in the mine dumps, the sand there is so fine and so soft, i know what you mean about traction on the hill climbs, its a bitch in the dry season. Check out my vids.
Probably 2/5ths. If I could have passed this particular baby-fine sandy part.... I'd have made it the rest of the way for sure. It was just an issue of traction. For a KX500 in that terriain an IRC M5B (?MB5?) with a whoppin' 140 width would have made it a cake-walk.
O_O my heart jumped when you idle rolled down that hill n started the bike, ill get my kicks from lane splitting at high speeds on the interstate thank you
Lane splitting is simply a necessity out here in Southern California. I split at a pretty brisk pace. Sometimes I'd get that competitive feeling and reel-in anybody splitting ahead of me. But every once in awhile I'll get into it with some kid whose all-speed-no-brains and they'll take the speeds ridiculously too high to where there is no way they can possibly stop or avoid one of the crawling cars if they try to change lanes all-of-a-sudden. That's when I bow-out and live to tomorrow.
Oh well i havent much exp on a hi class bike im coming up from a 200cc on a 600 now i dont split much fast than you would pass a car at this point - but if i was to try this hill omg i woulda smacked myself in the face with the handle bars
Naw... this hill's not that hard. I just couldn't get any traction in that one section. The sand in that area of the hill was like a fine baby powder and like 5 inches deep. This was like my 3rd or 4th trip on that bike after purchasing it before I wised up and got an IRC M5B 140 width for the rear to replace the MaxxCross 110 width one it had.
Hehe... the problem was just not enough traction. In that video the rear tire is only a friggin 110/80-18. I now have a 140/80 18 and it's a BIG improvement in the soft stuff!
I only saw a paddle tire on this HillClimber modified bike with a GSXR engine stuffed in the frame.
For sure though... you want a Soft Terrian tread tire out there to really fly. Like an IRC M5B or a Kenda MillVille. It's softer out there than it is in Gorman OR Stoddard Valley.
Nice vid! I've found as long as you can keep 3rd, the 5hunny will climb just about anything. It's the tight stuff where you have to drop to 2nd that gets you into trouble with the front end picking up. I bet dropping the forks into the triples a couple of inches would help alot for hill climbing.
Jawbone Canyon is pretty much where US Hwy 14 finally ends. There's no way I could have made that climb with the tire I had. It was a Maxxis Desert IT 110/80. I now have an IRC M5B 140/80, BIG DIFFERENCE in the soft stuff.
I wouldn't be able to tell ya... this was my first trip ever to this riding area. I got called-out by the others at the campsite to take a run at this one since I'm on a KX 500, otherwise, I don't think I would have even attempted this climb. But now it's like I HAVE TO go back and finish it someday.
riding in the sand sucks shit, get it in the dirt man!!

@TheGDizzo sorry, that was a lil harsh. my boyfriend had a kx500 and i rode
@ dumont dunes. fun bikes and very gentle and forgiving for a novice rider, the
perfect bike to learn on

I agree. It doesn't matter how big your engine is if the tire doesn't have some bite. A 110 is tiny for a 500
