Ares I-X didn't crash! It was a brand new test rocket that flew exactly as hoped and planned. No one was on board.
Only the first stage was loaded with fuel. The upper half was full of instruments but empty. At the end of two minutes when the first stage burned out, the two halves were separated successfully and made to tumble to begin their returns to Earth.
