I worked next door from the whistler sliding center and felt nothing but pity for the guys that built and ran the sliding center. It is one of the fastest tracks in the world and its the Olympics, what happened was a accident after 4 years of testing (+ design testing) that no one could have foreseen. P.s. everyone goes balls out for gold.

Most likely they couldn't do anything. I saw a video that showed a camera at the finish line watching him go down. You could hear the echo of the steel from him hitting clear as a bell as if you were next to it.

He had no chance to live and luckily, he died quickly. It's a huge tragedy that should never happen, especially in the Olympics.

Here's my point of view. ALL sports are risky. Everyone knows that. Even if the steel support beams were padded to the HILT, he still would have died from the jolt to his brain. It's sad...my heart goes out to all his loved ones.

You slide down a rock hard ice track on two thin metal blades 6inches above the ice doing 90mph you're safety can't be guaranteed. Safety exists sitting at your computer commenting on what happens. As far as "you did what I did looking for fatal luge death," I searched Vancouver Olympics looking for footage of a speed skating gold win. Don't presume or project your actions onto others.
