Was looking forward to this broadcast having seen the DVD of the Paco deLucia version and nearly being as big a fan of the flamenco guitar as I am of the classical guitar. However, found it really disappointing, playing seemed very lacklustred, slow, and full of very weird accents.
@nkoshkin I probably would have had lower expectations had Simon Rattle not been so critical of classical players in his spoken introduction to the piece.
PS. I'm an admirer of your music. Though I'm only an amateur guitartist I've loved playing what I'm able too.
@nkoshkin I watched the BBC transmission. There is a DVD of the concert but I don't know the contents. He commented on lack of rhythm and time keeping in many classical players. I myself think the standard is very high these days, I attend many concerts, orchestral and opera as well as guitar.
@selfTaughtGirl What a shame! Such words could be valid something like 80 years ago, but not at all today. We have so many excellent players to which Canizares cannot compete. Even the first arpeggios Canizares plays terribly, like a washing plank...
Oh, I guess Sir Simon Rattle doesn't know about the best classical guitarists. Probably he played something once with a stupid player and decided that ALL the guitrists are about the same.
The orchestra plays in a wonderful way, but canizares is like 2 levels below. His cheap tricks don't serve music, only disturb. I understand the idea of opening to other genres, however this performance in fact suggests that classical guitar is on lower level than it really is. I hope that one of the great contemporary classical guitarists(e.g. Marcin Dylla) will one day have an occasion to perform with this orchestra and make music of the highest level.
@KRUPOWIEJESA Absolutely agree! It is really strange why the best classical guitarists are ignored. Of course, Marcin Dylla would be seven hundred percent better instead of this strange player Canizares. He is absolytely not on the level of the music and the orchestra.
Why do these people have to compare all guitarist against each other, I saw the concert at the Movies yesterday, and was blown away with Canizares performance
it was wonderful to watch close up his hand work, you notice that the people who make such unjust remarks are nobodys.
@Henry8thThe The comparison was provoked by the choice of the soloist. For cello or violin concertos Simon Rattle invites the best cellists and the best violinists. But for guitar concerto which is for CLASSICAL guitar the choice is more than strange. Under unkown reasons the soloist is not the first class flamenco player. This is very strange. And very unfair for the instrument and for the players who earned the international fame.
@o1160507 Rodrigo agreed with Paco de Lucía playing it. You can look up the media (15 o 20 years ago). It's not so difficult gathering a bit information before saying what you said.
@Petra51234 Hi Petra, this Concierto de Aranjuez is an original experimentation by the Berliner Philharmoniker accompanied by Juan Manuel Canizares, an internationally acclaimed contemporary flamenco guitarist. This performance is a fantastic attempt to cross the boundaries of the traditional classical orchestra and to open to other genres. We are totally in love with this performance!
@Petra51234 Shame? Your words are full of s***. Cañizares is maybe the best Spanish guitar player, which means being the best in world, with a better technique than anyone else.
You say those are great orchestra and conductor. Please why Cañizares has been chosen to play with them.
