Half of the stuff you need to know about what kids need comes from the kids themselves. I've spent 5 years analysing what made me and students around me tick, and I only left last year so it's fresh in my memory.

The two main things are: smaller classes and removing bad behaviour. Public schools need a better exclusion system to take misbehaving kids out of class - that was a huge bulwark for learning. Moreover, I learned far better in a smaller class with fewer distractions. Listen to the kids.
