I really like the subtlety of the direction/performances in this scene - esp. the cut to Margaret's face after his words and back. This shows us he is gauging her reaction during the pause. Her expression (open-mouthed half-smile plus eye contact - great acting by MacDonald!) is inviting, so he goes ahead and kisses her. Needless to say, his lines are also great as they show a) why he is where he is and b) what makes him attractive to her (brains, experience, and knowledge of human nature).
