The problem with Tokamak fusion is that these plasma's tend to become unstable. They start to pinch. You get all these problems with ELMs etc. This means you cannot attain true steady state operation so you have to start pulsing the entire reactor. Now that we know this, the DPF, which is a much cheaper, rapidly pulsed fusion generator capable of aneutronic pB-11 fusion, seems much more practical. Seriously: you should check out Eric Lerner's talk at google tech talks if you want to know more.

Focus Fusion and EST are much more promising because these containment concepts use self--confined plasmoids. The magnetic fields that are possible in self--confined plasmoids are several orders of magnitude stronger than anything that can be generated using external magnets.

My point is that the intuition that many people have about fusion is that it always costs a lot of money and the deadlines for useful gain are always about 50 years away. That intuition is essentially correct. Scientists have basically underestimated the technical challenge time and time again. Now a huge paradigm shift is at hand.
