The original 1958 version is the best. So relaxing :) 1979 version is pretty good. After that the tune just went downhill. Sorry but I didn't like the 1999 version that much, no offense to those who like it.
@VideoGameSoundtracks How right you are. No, seriously, you're right. It's played on trash cans. It was performed by a group called Stomp, who specialise in making music out of everyday objects. Listen out for the milk bottles too.
A lot of blue peter members are gone including andy and joel (2011) now replaced with barney harwood the remaning now is helen skelton and barney harwood
1979, 1996 and 1999 are my favorites. 1979 because Mike Oldfield did it, he's one of my favorite musicians. 1996 because it sounds different, I seem to recall Stomp did it?.
and 1999 is the one I feel most nostalgic towards :).
I'll always love the Mike Oldfield version, as I was born in 1977 and forever connected Blue Peter with the Excorcist as I was of that era. But I do like the Stomp version and the 1995 era version is nice too!
@johnmartin1097 It's also featured in Henry Wood's Fantasia on English Sea Songs, which is a standard part of the last night of the Proms and gets a reasonable amount of airplay on Classic FM etc ... I guess it's probably cropped up in quite a few other pieces ... in Tubular Belss by Mike Oldfield for instance
@johnmartin1097 It's not --- it's "Barnacle Bill" -- it's similar to the Hornpipe but not exactly the same. CF the last track of "Tubular Bells" for comparison.
Whoa. The 1990 version reminds me a lot of the soundtrack CD music for E.V.O. Search for Eden! And the 1992 version reminds me of music from a Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon series game.
The 1999 one is really nice! 1979's version is probably my favorite though.
What was it with the 90s and those damn saxaphones? I remember when it felt like the BBC was dominated by them with this, Neighbours and EastEnders... Obviously, my vote goes to the 99 theme. Everything in life should end with a massive DN! DN!
I think the program desperately needs a black disabled lesbian presenting to reflect all the richness we have today in multicultural Britain...
... what a load of bollocks! We sold Great Britain years ago, look at the state of this shit! I grew up on this program and it was great; who would want their kids watching this shit now?!
Oh my word that music at 3:26 brings back so many memories from years and years ago I remember as a kid every Monday and Wednesday and Fridays I used too come home from school sit in front off the TV and watch Blue Peter and that clip at 3:26 is my favourite it is fantastic also I remember a Blue Peter episode I watched sometime in 1998 when they played football on the show and they started talking about football I forgot when it was though I seem too remember it being a great episode though
I love that music at 3:36 I remember every Monday Wednesday and Friday afternoons at 5.10pm on BBC One on Childrens BBC the last programme off the day was Blue Peter and I loved that tune back then it was a real old classic that tune was I used too watch that every Monday Wednesday and sometimes Fridays way back in the year off 1999 but Blue Peter was really cool back then do you agree there I think that is a real old classic and it does bring back so many memories as well from way back in 1999
I remember BP from the late eighties and probably watched right up untill around 2000. But ad I young child I loved it, loads of adventure. The persevered represented wholesome respectable adults you could look up to. Best episode was the Tracy island build. I also loved byker grove
Am I the only one who likes the 1996 version? I grew up with that BP theme tune so thats the one that brings back the most memories for me. The 1960s track and the 1999 track are also very good. Don't like the modern ones though.
1996 was rubbish - literally! They used recycled and reclaimed bits and pieces, and it showed! 1999 was best, bit of steel drums and the feel of army bands with the fanfare finish.
The 1999 one is absolutely epic. By far the best! I've seen people ask wtf is going on with the 1996 one... I'm pretty sure they were some drummers using some recycled thing or something?
All the 1990s ones are of the purest grade of shit. Save for the 1999 one, which is the one I grew up with. The present day one is just as awful as the 90's.
@RaleighDawlishRaynar yep, Susan Stranks was the female host of Magpie (which apparently got its name from the fact that they stole the idea from Blue Peter).
She was joined by two blokes; one of whom looked like Brian May/Kevin Keegan.
I was playing Mike Oldfield elsewhere just now,. Second tune isn't it? Apt.
Fox News Channel over there in USA-land. I didn''t realise we had a version of it FNC. Here is some "news" we allegedly made earlier. To show when it suits us. Allegedly.
The original 1958 will always be the best for me! And NOT just because it's the original but because it's just nicer. I heard this on the radio a few times and it is more smoothing. The 1979 one is the second best, then 1999. Don't like the 2007 one, too techno and the 2005 one. And what is up with the 1996 one?? That doesn't even SOUND like the Blue Peter theme!
1999 was the best one in my opinion - it kind of bridges the gap between orchestral and modern, and you've got some world influence with the didgeridoo, steel and tabla drums. When they started having electric guitar as the lead instrument that's when it went bad... Even though they seem to be trying to 'modernising' it by doing so, it actually sounds more dated.
What an incredible study! This compilation should be recommended listening to all students of music, media and social history!
Personally speaking, I feel that the theme sounds embarrassingly weak whenever the producers try too hard to modernise it or make it overly internationally inclusive. I love all races and nationalities of course, but the strength of the piece suffers whenever there's a drive to make it more politically correct, as if the original were something to be ashamed of. IMHO
Most aren't bad and original is 'original' but 1979 clearly p1sses over everything else by a counrty mile. Whoever replaced it with 1990's effort wanted shooting. Still, if Mark Curry was in it then then that would be appropriate.
the original was great and the 1999 is the only and definatly worthy evolution from that. it seemingly captures all that blue peter is about, mixing in styles from different cultures musically.
Yes, the 1979 variation is fine, but they get messier and messier- just like the programme. They should go back to the original and do a straightforward, 'classic' version- modern recording techniques will make it feel contemporary. As to the programme itself, it's a question of where to begin- the last one I saw had the presenters shouting over muzak all the way through and it's no wonder that hardly anyone watches anymore.
I am truly sorry to all children that you are being inflicted the current tune. It is terrible!
I remember them changing it in 96, at the time I thought it was not as good as the 92 one; that has style. Still the best of all time is mike Oldfields version 1979 because its amazingly constructed and beautiful to listen to. Not like the Barneys breakfast theyve made of it in the most recent incarnation.
tried to avoid watching this , i was a 'Magpie fan' and tiswas , i think there were two sects at school blue peter/swap shop & Magpie/tiswas i think the later we returned to blue peter some years later to crack one off over Konnie Haq . whoops.
Is Blue Peter still going? I guarantee it'll go the way of Top of the Pops. To quote Paul O'Grady, "What people today working in television KNOW about television, you could write on an ant's bum".
The BP presenters used to be the most famous people on telly - can anyone name one?

I grew up with the 1999 and 2005 theme tunes, so I would have to say, those ones were the best. :)

It should be mentioned that the current theme is different to the one on here, they changed it again in 2008.

Ah, '96 and '99 are the best ones imo! :) I rather like the '79 tune also, it's like a pirate tune. ['86 baby]

the original was great and the 1999 is the only and definatly worthy evolution from that. it seemingly captures all that blue peter is about, mixing in styles from different cultures musically.

99 is worthless shit , the 80s and the 70s versions were the original and best , way before tv turned into a pile of worthless shit.

Structurally speaking, the themes seem to get more nonsensical as time goes on.

The 1999 version is the one I remember most, and a bit of the 2005.

They really have spoiled the theme tune (Present Day version), it sound S**T.

Have to say they killed the theme from 2007 onwards, doesn't even sound like Blue Peter anymore, loving the 1979 version though

Is Blue Peter still going? I guarantee it'll go the way of Top of the Pops. To quote Paul O'Grady, "What people today working in television KNOW about television, you could write on an ant's bum".
The BP presenters used to be the most famous people on telly - can anyone name one?
edidsbury 2 years ago 18
@edidsbury Yep,Blue Peter is still on!

@edidsbury That wasn't hard to do though when there were only 3 channels. A lot less people on telly to compete with :)
choccyva 1 year ago
@edidsbury Anthea Turner, Jon Leslie, Katy Hill, Tim Vincent, Stuart Miles.. just to name 4.
