Most biased/one-sided documentary I have ever seen. I am so tired of environmentalists bashing the oil sand and fossil fuels relentlessly, when they are so essential to sustaining the global population and economy. The day environmentalist give up their planes and cars is the day I may give them an ounce of my respect. But until then I look forward to contributing to the development of the Athabasca oil sands. Oil sand are here to stay, so get used to it hippies... its time to get a real job!
Too many braindead shithead libertarians out there. They all scream about hanging bankers and the corporate financial terrorists. But, when THEY are the ones oppressing others (the poor, future generations) by their selfish lifestyles: eating meat, refusal to support radical transformation of society off oil and coal - then they flip out and complain about THEIR freedoms being under attack.
First there own people through toxic water and then the world at large through those gas emissions and it's not like we don't have any other alternative to produce energy, yes they maybe bit comparatively expensive but atleast they are not suicidal!!
Guy stands there with a cigarette saying he is worried about the tar sands effecting his health guys driving gasoline powered snowmobiles trying to do away with the oil industry Experts flying around in jet aircraft fueled by hydrocarbons trying to stop oil productioIf you want to stop oil production STOP DRIVING YOUR CAR.(betcha never thought of that)
The 500 year genocide of indigenous people is still alive and well in Canada. The Tar Sands project is an abomination against humanity and it's criminality even dwarfs that of the the Wall Street pirates and thugs who brought down the global economy, an economy still mired in depression. The whole Tar Sands region looks like some otjher planet. Travel up there and see for yourself.
Almost all the viewpoints given are those of people opposing the oil sands - this documentary does not directly consult anybody who supports them. It is not objective, and it is not to par with what a world-class documentary should be, at least as far as impartiality is concerned.
It's not credible and paints an unfairly negative viewpoint. Frankly, I'm disappointed that this is coming from Al-Jazeera.
@Lodoss9 ask yourself, what's the motivation of those who support the tar sands? now how about those who oppose it? we are fed the same spin by the canadian and alberta governments, the mainstream media, & the oil companies themselves about the benefits of the tar sands & it's always the same...jobs & money. well if a large part of the economy is based upon people having jobs that are responsible for causing as much pollution & wholesale destruction as the tar sands project, to hell with jobs!
@dwdeclare ya, and to hell with the tax revenues that pay for healthcare, and welfare, and pensions. fuck it, lets all just die. You first though, ok?
@willythewildwino if the only way canadians can pay for healthcare, welfare and pensions, is to destroy the environment and wildlife with the tar sands and give people cancer in the process, then they are not only unethical but incredibly ignorant as well. funny thing about many canadians, even when they learn that an activity is causing harm, they choose to turn a blind eye to the suffering it causes. shameful and pathetic!
@dwdeclare yes and i suppose you dont drive in gas burning cars, or own items made of plastic. Everyone on the planet uses oil products. Your hands are as bloody as anyones
@willythewildwino let's all try and live as ethically & responsibly as we can. it's up to each one of us to live in such a way that we try and reduce the amount of suffering we cause to other sentient beings. once we learn that our lifestyles are causing harm, we ought to take steps to minimize that harm, not continue in the name of profit & monetary gain. there's more to life than a little money, the sooner we come to that realization, the cleaner & kinder our planet will be.
@willythewildwino True that. Before these "hippies" open their green mouths they need to understand the implications of their actions. If the oil sand gets shut down, the price of oil will rise, jobs will be lost, and expenses will rise. Alternative to fossil fuels are just not feasible/economical yet. Solar panels are crap, wind turbines kill more birds then you can imagine, and don't even get me started on electric cars.
For the first time in my life, I'm ashamed to be Canadian. Not only are we continuing to destroy the land and people of the First Nations, we appear to be hell bent on destroying ourselves and the planet itself.
@janegca the environmental issue is relevant, the issue of "First nations" land is not. The fucking chugs and their whiney bullshit is getting old. Besides, half of them work in the oil sands.
@adamusprime1001 Speaking of blindness, mining of the oil sands started in '67. Ramped up significantly in '03. Harper was elected '06. Feeling enlightened?
Regarding Green House gas emission West runs after China and India while back home still it continues to produce massive amount of pollution in an increasing rate. Where are we heading? Canada agreed to reduce carbon emission by 6 while in actually increased 26%!!!
I'll take Canada's oil sands over Middle East/American blood oil. Wars in Palestine, Israel, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen and eventually Syria and Saudi Arabia are all about controlling the supply of oil. War is also far more destructive to humanity and the planet than Canadian oil sands.
And to those who bow to the alter of religious environmentalism: Humanity has dominion over environment not the other way around.
@deceiver123m that's not the point. you've actually completely missed the point of this entire doc. oh sweet baby jesus you're an ignorant ass. we don't have dominion over the environment - other than creationism that's gotta be just about the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my life. when we talk about saving the environment we're talking about saving us HUMANS. Regardless of whatever the hell we do, the earth is gonna keep on going, it's us humans that are gonna die. jackass
@deceiver123m And I'll take outlawing tar sands and fracking and putting anthropogenic global warming (AGW) deniers into prison for life, and executing them if we have to, over them making life increasingly difficult for those of us pushing for electric vehicles powered by wind and solar farms.
Only a shithead who knows nothing about reality or how the way the world works would say something as stupid as "humans SHOULD control the environment" and not the other way around.

Harper is the biggest fuckface on the planet. First he allows the development of the tar sands to destroy Canada. Now he's enslaving the country with his majority! The majority of people (the ones who voted in the cunt!) are blind to truth.
@adamusprime1001 the oil sands have been going for decades, waaaaay before Harper. this has nothing to do with Harper. If you dont like the oil industry, stop driving cars and using plastic. The oil sands provide tax revenue for healthcare, welfare, roads, schools.
That is such a simplistic view. The point is the dividends from investing in alternative technologies offer a bigger payoff. Remember GM killed the electric car in the 1970's because of pressure from big oil. We are at a technological point where alternative fuels, and alternative energy technologies are becoming competitive with oil. However, the tar sands are the dirtiest, least desirable form of oil there is.
