There is a difference between making fun of and making a joke. Please learn it. Vai clearly idolises the guy, which explains the several different Hendrix covers Vai has done.
The girl they show at the begining of the video ( with the letters U.R.A.Q.T) is Ann Marie Calhoun, (she's an awsome violinist) She is really beautiful on Steve Vai's new DVD "where the WILD THINGS are" !!!
Personally, as a fan of Hendrix first and then Vai, I think Vai nailed it man, the energy, the furor, the crowd's reaction to his banter, it was all awesome! I think he did a great tribute to Hendrix, and Hendrix is laughing his ass off right now loving it.
@TrendyhendyPD i don't want you to think that i didn't know that of course jimi had something that hasn't been matched but then again you can't listen to steve vai and overlook his amazing talent or eddie van halen for that matter is in the same boat but no dude purple haze is an awesome song probably one of the most recognizable riffs in rock history at least for me anyways
@TrendyhendyPD wow dude somebody should slap you after that comment, you are way too in the past it's time to move yes i am a huge jimi hendrix fan and while his music isn't dead he however is dead, steve vai has way more to offer than what jimi had i mean don't get me wrong there's only one jimi hendrix but he died way too soon he could of been so much more but it's a new era and steve vai is at the forefront and you can't deny that and who are you to say he lacks pure soul lol

@armandoilfamoso THANK YOU so much for posting that link to Hendrix!! … totally killer!!! didn't know such good color film of Band Of Gypsys even existed. Much appreciated!
@MegaBossman28 I have never heard a single song on any of Vai's CDs or here on YT that Vai has written that I would consider all that good. It’s just my opinion of course however given the fact that most of his fans are guitar wanna bes and there is almost no demand for radio play I would guess I’m not the only one who holds that opinion. Satriani has good songs. Even Eric Johnson has one. But I’m still waiting for Vai to write something good.
@MegaBossman28 Yeah yeah "you're a moron" bla bla, Tell you what. Why don't you go review another movie? Maybe if you lose some weight you can do a review without having to gasp for air ever few words.
Steve Vai is a unique character. He has the personality of a complete nerd(a leather dress, complete disdain for anything too mainstream, lame jokes), and he became a rock star purely from his playing ability. I like what he did on this cover though(his commentary aside)
Jimi started the guitar world, Satriani harmonized and perfected it, and was a teacher to many, and Vai, from working with the music extremist Frank Zappa, and getting lessons from Satriani has become the best technical guitar player in my opinion. He has more melody and feeling then Malmsteen.... Anyone who has listened to just half of Steve's work would agree.
God takes guitar lessons from Steve Vai. Jesus has everything that Steve Vai's ever released. Buddha has a Steve Vai signed Ibanez Gem. Shiva once had a beer with Steve Vai. The Devil and Steve Vai once split a plate of nachos at the bowling alley. And Xerxes bows down to Steve Vai.
@LSD0Moon No, I'm sorry. Despite receiving hundreds of comments saying EXACTLY the same thing, it was yours that taught me that there's no point in playing this song any other way than Hendrix did! I feel real stupid putting this video up now!

yep, its all good!!!! Hendrix always ! and also check out Lavender Paradise Fire video...on youtube...you might like the visuals... she's hot, a cool hendrix tune : )~
@SloppyGoat not by todays standards hes not, but im pretty sure during his time he was pop (but pop probably had a different meaning back then). Hindrix Rules
Nope, he Jimi never considered pop. They didn't even know how to categorize Jimi. His music was not even really accepted, at first. Nobody knew what to think of it. They didn't even recognize that it was blues until about ten years ago when they made the announcement, as if it were some great discovery! DUH!!! LOL
I agree 1000%!!! Hendrix, with the help of some of the best LSD25 ever made, revolutionized the way the instrument was played, entirely! What a miraculous feat!!! Even the top musicians were intimidated when they heard and saw him. He was truly amazing!!! I hope to see such a drastic change in music in my lifetime again, but I doubt that will happen for a very long time. That was something so unique and special, it doesn't come along very often.
His engineers created a lot of the cool effects that we have today. They designed them on the fly, based on dreams or visions Jimi had. He had his own Electronics Engineer. A lot of cool things were being done for the first time in Axis Bold as Love. He played that axe like it was connected directly to his brain. Nobody can figure out how he kept it in tune with all that whammying. Who else was using a whammy bar on a strat that much back then? With no locks! (0_o)
His rant was really annoying and stupid, but his playing is awesome. But, by the way...jimi was better, noone can take away jimi's soul and spirit. As of soul and spirit, vai is only a pretender.
BUT, Shouldnt Vai do some singing in some of his songs? You know, like a normal song?
Isn't "pop" music "popular music"? I mean, "lo-fi" and "indie" music is popular nowadays. So is dubstep and club music. It's all pop music in one sense. I think since the debut of "pop" music, it has since been polarized with a recent image (DuranDuran, Madonna, N'Sync, Brittney Spears). Now music is all congealed into one thing almost; I mean look at like Kanye West and "artists" like that. All in all, to argue what something is with no true definition is to argue something with no end. Period.
@fluugenzinsky2 meh, altough its true what ya say, pop music is usually defined by whats on mtv and stuff, usually consisting out of easy loops, alot of hooks and generic lyrics with no true meaning mainly about love or being heartbroken or whatever...
if we would use your definition of pop music then all music genre's that were popular would be concidered pop, back in the 50's jazz was popular, would you go as far as saying jazz is pop?
@isaacwest In a lot of cases, yes. Definitely. "Club music" back in the 20s and 30s was ragtime and big band; that's what was popular. In the 40s, bebob jazz found its way into the underground clubs, but you didn't hear any Louis Armstrong there. The 50s also noted the rise of "rock" music, which in all of its versions, many have been popular and on Mtv. Many also haven't seen record sales over 2,000 units. Phases are phases and history is history. Also, I didn't define pop. I undefined it.
@Fluffypopcicle back then people weren't genre-bitches like people are nowadays. jimi hendrix was pop music, however, our view of pop nowadays is completely different.
*face palm* just because it's popular doesn't mean it's pop music. is led zeppelin pop because they are one of the best selling bands of all time? no, they're not. jimi hendrix was rock n roll.
i know that, but often times people (ESPECIALLY MAGAZINES) get their genres horribly wrong. they considered everything that was mainstream pop back then, but at the same time pop wasn't really a genre of music, now it is and for steve in this era to call jimi hendrix pop is disgraceful.
Pretty much the best bassist and guitarist around. The hot asian girl is on ecstacy. while Billy has never taken so much as an aspirin. Total Scientologist.
@Warmonger5000 Steve Vai's licks are based on Hendrix' licks: Just more tones,faster. Lead guitar playing because of its inherently improvised nature, doesn't stand still: It's always moving forward and developing. Shame you can't say the same about songwriting otherwise Steve Vai wouldn't have to cover Fire...
I love how he does the solo in the middle exactly as the original. It is somehow to show Hendrix great respect.

Period.
fluugenzinsky2 1 year ago 16
@fluugenzinsky2 meh, altough its true what ya say, pop music is usually defined by whats on mtv and stuff, usually consisting out of easy loops, alot of hooks and generic lyrics with no true meaning mainly about love or being heartbroken or whatever...
if we would use your definition of pop music then all music genre's that were popular would be concidered pop, back in the 50's jazz was popular, would you go as far as saying jazz is pop?
isaacwest 1 year ago
@isaacwest In a lot of cases, yes. Definitely. "Club music" back in the 20s and 30s was ragtime and big band; that's what was popular. In the 40s, bebob jazz found its way into the underground clubs, but you didn't hear any Louis Armstrong there. The 50s also noted the rise of "rock" music, which in all of its versions, many have been popular and on Mtv. Many also haven't seen record sales over 2,000 units. Phases are phases and history is history. Also, I didn't define pop. I undefined it.

did steve vai seriously just call jimi hendrix half pop? im sure LOTS of people in the crowd were pissed off with that statement.
Fluffypopcicle 1 year ago
@Fluffypopcicle you know that hendrix was named pop musician of the year in 1967-1968 right- by Melody Maker magazine?
devax1986 1 year ago
@devax1986
musical magazines are always the epitome of musical retardation.
Fluffypopcicle 1 year ago
@Fluffypopcicle back then people weren't genre-bitches like people are nowadays. jimi hendrix was pop music, however, our view of pop nowadays is completely different.
DennChooch 1 year ago
@DennChooch
*face palm* just because it's popular doesn't mean it's pop music. is led zeppelin pop because they are one of the best selling bands of all time? no, they're not. jimi hendrix was rock n roll.
Fluffypopcicle 1 year ago
@Fluffypopcicle
*face palm* the definition of pop music changed over the years.
DennChooch 1 year ago
@DennChooch
i know that, but often times people (ESPECIALLY MAGAZINES) get their genres horribly wrong. they considered everything that was mainstream pop back then, but at the same time pop wasn't really a genre of music, now it is and for steve in this era to call jimi hendrix pop is disgraceful.

@konshess So Steve Vai is an average guitarrist?! It's OK not to like the cover, but to call him average that is what it's really funny!

Warmonger5000 1 year ago
@Warmonger5000 Steve Vai's licks are based on Hendrix' licks: Just more tones,faster. Lead guitar playing because of its inherently improvised nature, doesn't stand still: It's always moving forward and developing. Shame you can't say the same about songwriting otherwise Steve Vai wouldn't have to cover Fire...
