  • ahhh what did 94029374938402048 say?? You guys negatively voted him too much, so now I can't make fun of him like the rest of you have done.

  • Comment removed

  • I think you went a little overboard on the sidechain effect but overall good :D

  • Great, great tutorial! That's how every tutorial should look like! :)

  • Nice tutorial

  • FUCK the song is f#ck'n epic :D

  • Thank you very much Mr. Singletary

  • If you're just going to do straight 4/4 techno with a kick on every 1/4 note, just put a time synced LFO on your melody. Same effect with less complexity.

  • Comment removed

  • have you made a song out of this melody??? please i want this song its so catchy!!!

  • Fantastic tutorial!!! Thank you so much, I'm new to ableton but have been using reason for the past 5 years. Sidechain compression is one of my favourite effects and I've been itching to find out how to do it in this program. Great teaching style and video quality - thanks!

  • Hell yeah, thanks for the tutorial!

  • Thanks so much for this, really concise and clear explanation.

  • Huston, i have a problem! ...that's why i'm watching this tut.

  • awesome tutorial.. this guy could be a smooth jazz radio station DJ

  • Excellent tutorial man. just what i needed

  • How the hell does anyone dislike this??

  • @TakeThatCommunists Because those morons came in here expecting to see someone standing with a chain on the side lol... Yup!! they were very disappointed. lol!!!

  • @TakeThatCommunists Because it's an overused gimmick at this point in the history of recorded music.

  • questionnnnn why would you make a seperate drum track instead of feeding your actual drum loop? is it so you can switch how the compressed sounds without affecting the real kicks? sorry if this question was asked & answered already :p

  • @rmarcelo91 if you fed in the drum loop to the sidechain compressor instead of just a different kick, whatever you're compressing would be sidechained by all the different elements in the loop - the hats, the snare etc. making a dedicated audio track with a kick makes it so that the sidechained track is only compressed by 1 kick.

  • @Ceb773 hmm, but can't you also single out the specific track you want from the instrument rack to sidechain by choosing it in the drop box below the first one?

  • @rmarcelo91 yeah sure, i thought you were talking about an audio clip. if you're using a drum rack you can select the kick. i meant for an audio track

  • Yes. I love you.

  • Can WE use the compressor in the return track? if yes, how?

  • @Realmetalriffs yes, you can use Ableton's Compressor in a return track - drag the device onto the return effect chain.

  • great tutorial thanks!!!!!!

  • how do i get my ableton to look like yours is set up ?

  • Extremely helpful and straightforward, thank you! -subscribed-

  • I hope to God you are a radio DJ. If not, what the hell are you doing sir? I'd kill for your voice

  • Excellent Video! thanks. and all these idiots that claim to be producers....well as a musician i wouldn go to a producer with a stinking attitude such as you @94029374938402048!!!! well done Abletonic! love the vids!

  • dude that sounds sick!

  • It just sounds like a gate to me. Then again, I'm not a producer so...take that how you want to.

  • @ThugRandles basically a gate effect with a sin shape on the volume yeah. just sounds a weeeeee bit different.

  • Great work!

  • Where do I get that J.River kick?

  • I am Just getting into Live. Good stuff. Thanks!

  • THAAAAAAAAAANKS MAN! *-----------*

  • Thank youuuuu!! :D

  • Really straight forward. glad I found this. I was having a lot of trouble getting the amount of control I needed through Records single sidechain input, I ended up using a lot of work arounds that seemed a little to jerry rigged for my uses. This is ezactly what I wanted to learn about. Great and concise tutorial.

  • well explained ;) thx for that

  • Thank you! Amazing video. I didn't know it was so easy to sidechain in live. catchy little track you have here too.. haha

P.S. you have a good, accessable voice.

  • @TS0AF totally.. and its really hard to listen to people when their voice grates even if its a good demo.

  • Thanx Bro!

  • thank you!!!

  • Is compression good when you're playing live?

  • My only question is why did you choose to use the "impulse" feature for your kick? Are there advantages to doing it this way? If so what? Great video btw!!!

  • @94029374938402048

We understand it all the better than you do, my friend.

Feel free to thank us producers for giving you the tools to reproduce, for without us and alcohol, your kind would have died out a long time ago.

  • @GeorgeBerryMusic HA HA,LOL THAT'S FUNNY BUT TRUE THANKS FOR YOU HELP :)

  • @94029374938402048 so u must be the only non nerd producer

  • @94029374938402048 that some funny shit because I think I pull more ass because of being a producer than you do talentless.... Singers have to turn to someone right?

  • @94029374938402048 or maybe if schmucks like yourself knew were smart enough to understand this, you would be able to enjoy the best of both worlds

  • @94029374938402048 cool story bro.

  • THANX :)

  • Those Ableton dudes really know what's up. I mean previously you had to route a signal out of a drum machine and use it to control the compressor and a lot of compressors didn't have a trigger input so you couldn't even do that........ ableton just makes it a 1st tier OPTION on the compressor. really awesome. i guess the simple UI of Live makes it easy to add shit like that

  • OMG!!! im 16!!!!! and now i know something super complicated and awesome :)

im going to be better than that dick tiesto :)

  • great

  • BIG TUNE

  • you my good man are a legend

  • Yea, very freekin helpful

  • i cant get the window below the input to say post effects rather than pre-effects. Im not getting the effect at all...

  • @TheBobilio same with me....

  • I'm on a horse.

  • so thats how you do that!!!! wow!~!

  • whats the drum loop your using?

  • @djfractalify - every house track ever.

  • Thanks, Huston!! Most helpful.

  • this nigga wanted to show me the POWER of LIVE 8

  • Thanks dude. I was trying this before, but i never brought the threshold down. Thanks

  • wow just messed with this and got almost instant magic! much less time consuming than setting up sChains in logic. unless any one knows of an equally fast way to do it in logic?!

  • @pattyhambar It's just as easy in logic. Send whatever track you want to trigger the sidechain to an aux, mute it, then make a compressor on the track you want to get sidechained, choose the aux in the "sidechain" box, and do the same thing this tutorial shows.

  • very good and useful tutorial ;) thanks a lot

  • love the tutorial !

  • Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • do you put a limiter on the master channel???

  • in pro tools watch?v=LviBAYi5EkU

  • great tutorial.been a real Big help.

  • do you have a download link to this song? xD

  • great. thanks

  • Hey Thanks for the good tutorials, its very helpfull> i was wondering, are there any tutorials about EQ-ing electro songs and mastering? Thanks

  • Hey I have just started using Ableton, I come from a Logic Pro background. I know how to do a lot of production techniques within logic but obviously Ableton is a little different, I'm using the sonalksis plug-ins and was wondering if anyone can tell me how to set up the compressor as a side chain. I think because its third party you don't get the little side chain tab you do with Abletons plug-ins.

    Regards

  • @shambles698 you have to sidechain with ableton's compressor..

  • @DJYoshaBYD wow really you can't use third party plug-ins to side chain? that's surprising, thanks for responding..............

  • It's guys like you that make me love Live8 more and more

    thx

  • hey huston great video learnning so much about ableton bout i have problem,a lot of my track sound low in volume even though i used EQ and compression for indivausal tracks.

is there somthing ideal i can for master track let me thanks.

  • great tutorial!

I am having a bit of trouble side chaining the SAMPLER. I loaded in a synth sound I wanted into SAMPLER and created a compressor but it does not give the sidechain effect. could someone give me some tips?

  • thats helpful

  • is this only on the live xxl edition? cause i got the standard cant seem to find compressor

  • Comment removed

  • this sounds realy overcompressed, no dynamic range, anyway I know it's a tutorial showing the function..

  • @The51db

Thanks so much! To then manual I go!...all 500 pages of it.

  • Noob question. The Threshold is controlling my volume. How do I fix this?

  • @SwedishBeatballs lower your gain a little may help.

  • ja toll, wo find eich diesen "Lead-Sidechain 2" denn??

  • That is true; the more processors you got, the best chance to get a clean and full amplitude sound. I got an 8gb mac (dual core) pro but for some instruments it doesn´t work as good as I wish but if you freeze checked channels you could free some resources. I guess a hippie with some drums can be as good as any computer if he knows how to play it even a mac (what do I love of them is their cooling system).

  • Think I could maybe get the project file for this? Want to play around, Im learning.

  • So useful Huston - thank you!

  • Thanks Huston.. Really helpful

  • Pay attention to the EQ component of the compressor. Adjusting those settings, particularly the gain, makes a huge difference.

  • wow this helped alot. thanks! :)

  • His very last word was 'Slainte' which means 'good luck' as gaeilge in Irish tongue of verse. There is a bit of useless information I thought I would share with the You-tube community while smoking a big fat green one.

I still have no clue of what he done but it sounds massive Peace

  • fabulous

  • ANAL ACTIVITIES!

  • Sincerely THANK YOU!

  • @MPCpadBanga - PC's are shit! Get a MAC! Apple is more than just a name you moron, you have clearly have no idea what you are actually talking bout now do you?

  • @relapse21777 you're hilarious. lost case.

  • @relapse21777 -_- the mac pc battle is simple. macs are for ppl who aren't good with computers and don't like doing things like downloading drivers, but have a slightly slower speed than Pc's of a similar price. they are just VERY user friendly. I fucking hate meesing with drivers and i'm not that good with computers in general so a mac is for me, if you are fairly good with computers then a Pc would be a better option.

  • @birdcjuda mac is for people who dont care why their computer work and pc is for people who dont want to know why their computer doesnt work.

if your good with computers why spend your time downloading drivers?

  • @relapse21777 hmmm i wonder what they use in the large hadron collider? pcs or macs?

  • @joshman94 linux unix or freebsd or all

  • thanks for this tutorial m8! very helpful!!

  • thanks huston!

  • Your videos are the best Huston. Not too slow like others. Very clear & thorough. Thank you

  • Awesome stuff... Keep it coming

  • awesome !

  • o yea!

  • wow tha's a killer line, can't get it outta my head now..

  • great tutorial,,,

  • great! thanks a lot!

  • thank you so much, I just transferred from reason to ableton, and im having trouble with it.....my least favorite part is the way you arrange the song in ableton, but I'll get used to it! =)

  • Ableton + Reason via Rewire is the way to go :)

  • yea i tried it.......and meh, i dont really like it =/

  • Perfect tutorial 5 star, Thank you very much !

  • Very cool tutorial. Ableton makes it so easy!!

    Thank you.

  • Thanks a lot. Very clear, very inspiring!

  • way to show us how to do the impulse thing

  • Comment removed

  • thanks for making sidechaining so easy. i normally put it off cos i can't be arsed to route everything. simples!

  • an absolutely superb and inspiring tutorial mr Sir Huston...

    soooooo musical!

  • awesome sidechain.. i am sorry fl studio and cubase ...u lost ...:P

  • awesome tutorial helps so much.

  • that feature appeared in live7, 8 is not needed

  • thanks, easy

  • It's very nice how you don't have to do complex signal chain twisting and turning to get there. Very good demo of the feature and the concept of side-chain processing for this genre. Thanks.

  • great. now everyone is going to sound the same. sigh.

  • that sounds soo cool without the kick... brilliant tutorial.

  • Can someone help please? Trying to see if there's a way to view peak levels in Session-View? help!

  • Der Schlüssel zum Track. Genau das wollte ich wissen. Super hilfreiches Tutorial. Der Rest liegt bei jeden Künstler selbst.

    MACH WAS DRAUS...

    ABLETON FOR LIVE jeahhh:-)

    Thanxxx

  • Keep 'em coming please!

  • thanks alot for this helpfull tutorial.

1 thing i dont understand, why is he muting the kick?

  • that kick is just there to trigger the sidechain compressor........it's not meant to be heard.

  • thx

  • sure i get that but why not trigger it just to the drum loop?

  • awesome man thanks

  • Thank you! Please keep on posting those amazing tutorials!

  • 5:30 = tha dopeness

  • good tute...but has much really changed since 7 with regards to sidechain compression?

  • thnxi was doing it wrong

  • i tore someones head off with ableton today.

  • brilliant tutorial thanks :-)

  • Great tutorial. I really need to get a Macbook. I run Ableton on Windows and just don't have enough resources to run compression on everything. Grr.

  • you dont need a mac specifically you need a better computer in general... i have quad core vist desktop with 4gb of ram and i NEVER ever have any trouble running not only ableton but dozens of VST's with all sorts of effects, a web browser, aim... and whatever else. dont be fooled APPLE is just a name.. i sold my mac coz the lack of software that is available

  • @MPCpadBanga Could agree more. Its all about how you treat your machine.

  • @MPCpadBanga oh yea? well I JUST bought a macbook pro with 8GB of ram and I also have a PC desktop with 20 GB of ram but i'll ALWAYS use my macbook pro for live because Mac's are much better suited for live use in my opinion

  • @socaldirtgods oh yeah? i have a Pc with 64Gb of ram, a macbook pro with 32Gb of ram for my live set, a car with 16Gb of ram and core i7, a dog with 32Gb of ram and Core2Duo and i rather have sex than presuming about that stupid things. In my opinion.

  • @psicodelio FAG0T!!!!

  • @psicodelio well i for one have an intel processor.... in my dick

  • @psicodelio lol 64 G ram

  • @MPCpadBanga totally agree... my i7 could probably run multiple instances of live. however, as far as live performances go, mac takes it because it is more stable and reliable.

  • @MPCpadBanga

Not trying to prove you wrong, but you can run windows on a mac too. Have the best of both worlds on the same computer. I find it the easiest.

  • Comment removed

  • @MPCpadBanga I've ran Live on both Mac and PC with very similar specs, and Live on the Mac is more stable. Also I do alot of web design work, and I need to see what my web pages are going to look like on both a PC/Mac.

I think it really all depends on what your doing and the software your running. Everyone has their preferences and these are mine. Oh and my tuition paid for my Mac, so money wasn't an issue.
