I knew a 747 pilot and he said thats the only time they use the rudder due to the massive strain it puts on the fuselage. Was it me seeing things or did the whole plane bend slightly when it touched down? They are designed to but never seen a fuselage do that before!

Very often crosswind landings work better than standard landings without crosswind - the same happens when you land in the night with papi approach.

The PIC concentrates more and therefore the landings are very often better.

The AN-225 however is a freight plane, maybe Patronique was referring to passenger jets? And - opposed to the A380 - the AN-225 was only completed once. And btw, the AN-225 is 8.3m wider and 11m longer, but the A380 is 6m higher. AN-225 is heavier though. Let's say, the AN-225 is the biggest plane overall, the A380 is the biggest passenger jet. Everybody happy now? :)

If we look at the history of Chinook (built by Boeing if I am not mistaken) its safety record is just awful! 25 British personnel where killed in Northern Ireland 9 yrs back when it plummeted into a hillside killing crew, and Government people.

But it is a proven design - still in production after nearly 50 years, and operated safely by many military forces around the world, including the RAF. The crash in that you refer to, (which was 17 years ago, not 9. And in Scotland not Ireland) occurred under dismal visibility, with fatigued pilots. It was never directly attributed to the aircraft.

Note the inordinate number of operational engineering bulletins issued by Airbus. Or how the tail just broke off of AA587 an A300.

Britain and France for 40 years pushed the boundries of Supersonic theory and put it to the test with Concorde. Yes, it was very expensive and yes it never did actually generate enough cash to pay for itself. Concorde was banned from NYC JFK initially;officials claiming it was too noisy - WRONG it was jelousy!

It had a superb safety record - systems on board which could out-perform still, some of todays aircraft systems for example the landing gear assembly is still technically more advanced than any jet flying today! Concorde was only permanently grounded because of a fire which was caused when it was taking off from CDG Airport Paris when it kicked up a piece of FOD on the runway left by.....YES An American Airlines Boeing aircraft prior to Concorde's take-off!

And don't forget the Hughes H-4 Hercules. It has more wingspan than a AN-225 and is as high as the A380. It's made of wood, has 8 propeller engines and it can fly (did fly only a mile or two).
