The techniques that karate uses comes from shaolin dim mak. In its true use, no motion is wasted on defense to attack. All movements were all attack and the effects were usually instant. Chinese taught to attack the attacker. This threw the opponent off guard. Both tuite and kyusho jitsu are the best examples. Tuite came from an art in China called chi-na and kyusho jitsu came from dim mak. It was changed by later masters and watered down so children wouldn't hurt each other in training.

Okinawa, just like other places, has a history that's different than what people think. Even I am learning that it was a different kingdom altogether. In a way it's something like Korea. I learned that just like Korea, Okinawa got some of its martial arts from China. The difference is instead of having a country unified, it was conquered by another country. Okinawan karate(Kempo in the native dialect.) Came from the shorinji(Shaolin) The closest proof is the famous crane technique.

I think some people may not understand that the Ryukyu O kuni or the Ryukyuan Kingdom came to an end in 1879 or Meiji Ji Dai 11 nen. And that the first Prefecture or Ken time period of Okinawa Ken was in 1879 and the second Okinawan Prefecture time period started in 1972 or Showa Ji Dai 47 nen. They may only know of Okinawa as a Ken of Japan and not it's Ryukyuan Kingdom time period. Osu

I was referring to the Okinawans as Japanese, as they were Yamato people too. And this was around the 12th century and late Meiji era, as Okinawan te masters went to China to learn gung fu and incorporated it into karate. The basic survival instinct creates a need in tribes/communities/regions to develop defense techniques which span the globe. Through natural collective agreement and the relatively constant nature of the tools (human body) available for empty hand combat, the fighting styles of the world have many similarities. Any attempt to credit any one source as the genesis of martial arts is futile.

karate is flexible and it is quite useful as any self defense/offense. It depends on how you interperate and apply your techniques. My art is linear and circular, it is called uechi-ryu, I sometimes refer to it as the only kung-fu karate you'll ever need to know.

Bubishi is the name of that old looking book in the film; this book is the original source of all karate. Bubishi contains southern Chinese kungfu techniques (white crane, etc) as well as traditional Chinese medicine, chi theories, dim mak/death touch/vulnerable medridians. The book was a personal notebook belonging to an anonymous Chinese martial arts student. Karate was called the way of Tang (from Tang dynasty, meaning Chinese) hand; the Japanese changed the name to empty hand.

No, the okinawans changed the name themselves. The first known written evidence of the current kanji is in a book by Hanashiro Chomo already in 1905 and it is likely that since it was written that way, it must've been already in use. The "official" decision to use the current kanji was in a 1936 meeting of karate masters

Like I said, the meeting of masters (present were such masters as Chomo Hanashiro, Chotoku Kyan, Choki Motobu, Chojun Miyagi and Choshin Chibana) decided "officially" to adopt the "empty hand" kanji. Before that, both "china hand" and "empty hand" were used. So it wasn't the japanese who changed the kanji, it was the okinawans themselves.

Okinawans are Japanese.  You may wish to dispute this. The point I was trying to make is on the origin of Karate. The motivation behind changing Tang-Chinese Hand to Empty Hand was Japanese nationalism. I have read karate books written by Japanese masters claiming Karate is an indiginous Japanese art. They do not want to acknowledge the origin.

Well, yes, okinawans are japanese now, but okinawan culture is quite separate from japanese culture, which is why I said that the change wasn't made by the japanese. The roots of karate are in China, that's not an issue for most practitioners of okinawan karate, but the big question is that in what styles the roots are in. In Goju and Uechi ryu the chinese roots are more clearly visible, but in Shorin, which is the oldest style, nobody really knows the true roots

Okinawans were "naturalized" and became Japanese by the time of war time Japan. War time Japan turned from revering all things Chinese to despising all things Chinese. One of the obvious Chinese roots of Karate is White Crane: Hakutsuru kata literally means White Crane; Sanchin/three wars is a famous core white crane kata. Pinan/Heian katas, the basis of all karate styles, are based on a now lost Chinese kata. Shorin literally means, Shaolin of Shaolin temple.

The Pinan/Heian kata were formed mostly from a kata called Kushanku, they most certainly weren't based on a "now lost Chinese kata". Kushanku is still actively practised in many Shorin styles. You may be referring to the "lost kata Channan", but the thing is, Channan was most likely just a "working name" for the Pinan kata, i.e. when Itosu was creating them, he called them Channan but when he was finished, he renamed them Pinan

How come none of them taught Channan, but all taught Pinan?!

All these other speculations came about after the rise of Japanese nationalism and imperialistic ambition.

As for White Crane, well, it may be one root in some styles, but again, not every style.

Early Karate such as Shuri-Te, for example, was influenced more by Kung Fu, including a few elements of some of the Shaolin styles, than it was by any "Chinese Kenpo." Not the first time a decent vid has had some facts off - I've noticed the History Channel has had some not-so-on-the-ball facts before, and not just in regards to martial arts.

Kempo IS Kung Fu. The same two letters can be read as "Kung Fu" in Chinese and as "Kempo" in Japanese. So basically "Kempo" is a Japanese name for Kung Fu that was brought to Okinawa.

Maybe in name, although if one wants to explain an art, for historical clarity one should use its name from its country of origin. The movements from all the Kempo schools I've seen are different from any kung fu styles I've seen; there are similarities, but the general arts have some very distinct differences.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the term "kung fu" may translate as "kempo" but the numerous arts classified as Kung Fu (wushu, (not wushu as in the modern wushu crap that the communists created)) are different from Kempo. Kenpo was Kung Fu. The last two letters can not sometimes be read as "Fu Kung Ju" in Korean as Kem-Fu or Kung-po. So basically "Kung po-fu goju Matsubyashi ryu" is a Koreancheese name for Kung-fupo that was imported to Okinawa. You had several facts wrong aswell.

kwan bup is the korean term. kempo/kwan bup/chuan fa/ken fat/kun tao. all mean law of the fist, or fist method. you're right in the fact that more often than not they were referring to kung fu. however it's just a general term.

Kenpo does not mean Kung Fu. Kung Fu is written 功夫. Kenpo is 拳法. The chinese reading is quan fa. The meaning of quanfa or kenpo,in japanese reading, is "method of the fist", whereas Kung Fu means "achieved by own effort".
