I am a railroad fan. And I like most GE products. And I do like this. But not just anyone can go buy one : I don't QUITE get the point. It's like advertising an X-ray machine, which they also make.

X-Ray machines are also advertised, but mainly in medical journals - basically to hospitals and the medical profession!!!

Some of these comments seem to indicate that some are uninformed.

GE does manufacture locomotives. Assembles them at their plant in Erie, PA, as opposed to EMD, which has outsourced most of their construction to Canada and Mexico.

The modern GE locos are far more reliable than EMDs. EMD's quality started sliding in the early 2000's when they started shifting assembly out of the country. They slid completely off the charts into sh**sville when GM sold the division in 2005.

They're selling their brand name (GE), not the locomotive... People will only watch a Refridgerator Commercial so many times; while the customer won't buy a locomotive the commercial, and brand name, will wash to the surface quicker and give them something unique to consider about the manufacturer when they see the GE emblum on the refridgerator they're buying.
