@Proonur No... first released on the eponymous "The Velvet Underground" in 1969. Doesn't appear on a Lou Reed record until 1978's live album, "Take No Prisoners".
Awesome! Mike Mills is playing the best bass you could ever play, the Rickenbacker 4001. Chris Squire Pionered it, Geddy Lee Mastered it, and Mike Mills kicked ass on it also.
@darcyUSA21 Yeah but Mike Mills has been playing Vintage Fender Precisions for more than 20 years now (the FIRST electric bass!) And Paul Mc Cartney "Pionered it" Before Squire! Paul now plays his old Hofner.
Thanks so much for putting this gig up. I've had it on bootleg for years but never dreamed it existed in video form! I love this version of 'Pale Blue Eyes'..
Hard for me to pick a favorite VU album, but the third one was the first one I was able to find, back in 1976. It was in a crate of 25c each albums at a pawnshop in Mississippi, I had to tape the cover back together. I still have it.
I thought this would be sucky as hell... oops! My bad... it's pretty good =)

good cover, just a little upbeat for my liking but i guess that's just REM'S take on it.
mtaylorkingcarper 1 year ago
Actually quite a faboulous cover!! And holy shit, were they young back then - and today quite the same. REM RULES!!
cxmafia 1 year ago
For some stupid reason Stipe reminds me of Cobain in this vid. At 1:48, his eyes go skyward.

Were it not for this fantastic cover i'd never have found the original so give me peace with the negative comments.
A great song and covered really well.
dascotton 1 year ago
@dascotton Me too. If it hadn't been for REM covering Velvet Underground songs, I doubt if I'd have found out about them for a long time.
Definitely a country twang.

thought as you as everything; i've had but could not keep,

I love their cover, but the song has five verses and they only do the first two. The lyrics are amazing all the way through.
Like this one:
"If i could make the world as pure and strange as what i see,
I'd put you in the mirror I put in front of me,
I put in front of me."

I love REM but this BEAUTIFUL melancholy song is new to me.
Would be better in studio or a blues house without 60 seconds of screaming and live concert tuning up
So far I like Velvet Underground's version best.. the one David Gray version I've heard so far had disappointing acoustics :-/
