Why is this associated with racism and African Americian issues? It is similiar to Strange Fruit, which is about lynching and possibly the KKK. God Bless the Child was inspired from an argument that she had with her mother. Wasn't it about people having material things but you are blesssed if you have an inner peace and self respect. Sadly, Billie died tragically young.
I think you're talking about a different Billie Holiday song-not God Bless the Child. You're talking about the song Strange Fruit. Unfortunately, the "strange fruit" are black men hanging from "Southern trees". Maybe she's talking about the slavery days or maybe up until the 70s. One who's been in the South (other than just for a brief visit), can see that, although not much hanging from trees happens presently, the bad treatment of Blacks in the South is still worse than elsewhere.
@TSDAudioDeck Strange Fruit Southern trees bear a strange fruit blood on the leaves and blood at the root black bodies swingin in the southern breeze strange fruit hangin from the Poplar trees Pastoral scene of the gallant South the bulging eyes and the twisted mouth scent of Magnolia sweet and fresh then the sudden smell of burning flesh Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck for the rain to gather, for the wind to suck for the sun to rot, for the tree to drop here is as strange and bitter crop
@TSDAudioDeck Well, unfortunately the strange fruit she is singing about is not fruit at all. It is a metaphor for dead african american bodies swinging from a tree. In those days you could drive through certain parts on the south and see lynched black people hanging from tree's. Its a very sad and dark song that talks about the racist history of American culture. I'm glad that period of history is over and we are in a new day.
Cool

I love "Strange Fruit", too. But, it's such a sad song when one understands what the strange fruit is.

@comet9 Whites don't kill black people at the same rate that they're killed by blacks. I'm sure "bad treatment" is relative.
