Dan's combining his memory of this documentary with the (proven hoax) urban legend of a doomed Soviet moonshot hastily prepared to beat the US to it. Legend has it that a miscalculation sent the team of Cosmonauts (or singular Cosmonaut, can't remember) wide of the moon and drifting aimlessly in space to await their demise.

Either way, it's an amazing story and a beautiful song, and one of the greatest things Wolf Parade has ever done.

He was influenced, at least partially, by The Red Stuff, but he mixed his memory of the documentary with an urban legend of the Soviet space program.

The portion of The Red Stuff he's remembering is the deaths of the Soyuz 11, which was recounted by a family member. The men were killed by the vacuum of space when a device meant to regulate cabin pressure malfunctioned on the return. The vessel landed safely on earth but all the Cosmos inside were asphyxiated.

It's also interesting that this band was created to open for Arcade Fire, and AF's song "Laika" is a reference to a russian dog who was sent into space with no plan on how to get her back to earth. It's neat that it dosen't seem like they "ripped off" AF, but maybe visited a similar theme and made it something their own.

I normally don't like literal videos, but this one actually made me get into the song more, which is now one of my favorites on a great album, and it give the song sort of a twist: the song is the astronaut adressing Yulia, the video is maybe an interpretation of what she actually saw and what actually happened. I love that the astronaut looks both like the soulless alpha male you'd expect, but also very scared and vulnerable at parts.

Half truth. The Russians did, most certainly, lose men in space that they did not document. There were a pair of Italian brothers that supposedly recorded some of these losses via radio transmission. BUT, this song in particular has to do with a Cosmo lost in a moon shot mission (they overshot, and the man drifted alone, helpless in space until he died). It's a fairly popular myth but certified hoax.

All the same this it's an incredible story and this is a 5 star song.
