One of the greatest nights in pro wrestlng history. WCW paced Goldberg's ascent PERFECTLY. By the night this epic match took place, the hype for a Hogan-Goldberg match had reached critical mass.. I bet even VINCE watched it from start to finish backstage at Raw!
i was a wwf fan growing up, never wanted to watch wcw but even i herd and saw this match and all the fuss over goldberg.... but for all you goldberg fans he was not and will never be as big as austin no matter how many guys u feed him to get his 173-0 record........ but all the same respect goldbeg..
i was wwf growing up didnt watch wcw and didnt want to... but even i saw this match....... but for all you goldberg fans he wasnt bigger than austin and never will be no matter how many victorys you give him on a sliver plate... repect goldberg!!! peace
WCW was frickin' AWESOME!!! But Vince Russo was a frickin' jackoff and fucked it up bad, thereby no more money was being brought it, so Vinny Mac bought it. Shame really, I loved WCW.
Its funny, i did not even watch wrestling, WWF or WCW/NWO. But for some reason I watched this match. It was prolly because of the hype. I dont really watch todays wrestling, its to fake and the guys are clearly roided up.
Proud to say I was there. Loud as hell! The metro was packed and everyone was yelling, "Goldberg!!" Wild, loud, exciting and fun. Wrestling at its peak!
My problem here with WCW was they never really focused on the match.. I mean Hogan dropped his trade mark leg drop 3 times on Goldberg and not really a mention. They continue to talk over Hogans finisher.. Ok then Curt Henning comes down and receives a Diamond Cutter from that black guy and they go nuts! What was more important? the match or Henning getting a Cutter? Oh dont forget this was a WCW tite match.......
I hated WCW, but I tuned into nitro this night. I was 16 years old and can clearly remember this match. The hype was unbelievable. Everyone was talking about it. Great moment in wrestling history.
As another point, TNA is using that same formula today. For the most part, their weekly shows often feature PPV quality matches, and more pivotal plot twists and turns (face/heel turns, title changes, etc.) occur in non PPV events more than durign PPV's. Are they simply giving the fans what they want?Uh, yeah! Is it the same seeing Sting now as it was back in the late 80's? Of course not, but they are doing better than the WWE would have done with him. :-)
Bischoff was an idiot for giving this match away on free t.v. Cost himself at least a month of buildup and promos that would have not only a) made the company continue to keep up if not win the ratings war with the wwf and b) have a big pay per view which no doubt would have made WCW millions of dollars.
What a horrible, horrible business move, but as a fan it was great for me =D
I couldn't agree with you more. During this time Bichoff was setting up horrible main events for PPV's (remember Hogan vs. Piper where Piper spent the previous month in Alcatraz. Sheesh!).
That said - this was one of the greatest matches in wrestling history. Definitely the greatest non-PPV match.
Yeah, I guess money making wise it wasn't a smart move. But then, to give a match like this to the fans for free was really incredible. This was, without a doubt, the greatest match ever on TV. The sheer emotion when Goldberg wins was unprecedented, and has not been matched since. This match is a prime example of how WCW managed to hold it's own against Raw for so long. WCW during the NWO days was an entity all of it's own, and deserves to stay that way. Hell yeah!
Listen, Bishoff was faced with Monday night ratings. It was in mid February when the ratings turned against the WCW with the Stone Cold, Shawn Miuchaels fued with Mike Tyson, leading up the Wrestlmania 14. That's when the WWE started beating them week after week. So Hogan came up with the plan to regain the ratings by letting Goldberg beat him for the title. And you have to remember, they sold out 40,000 fans in the Georgia dome.
But by giving a match away like this on Free tv, he is hoping that he draws new and different viewers into his program, which in turn they become fans, and order future ppvs. a move like this is done with money in mind, just not instant money. you could hype this match for a ppv, but at the cost of fans that otherwise wouldn't pay 30 bucks for a ppv missing this. this is what i miss about the mon night war, both sides putting on great shows every monday to pull viewers away from the other.
looking back on it, i'm kinda ashamed that i used to like this shit. i mean it's so fake it's almost comical. but this match right here, sums up the reason why i used to love this shit.
Golderg, Rock, Hogan, Stone Cold these guys were men, men with attitudes. Now we got Randy "fag" Orton, Rey Mysterio, John Cena, and Edge. These guys look like teenage faggots in the face and know more about trashtalking than wrestling. WWE nowadays is as gay as it's ever been.
Dude, don't let people bait you like that, LoL. This is just another guy trying to be a smart ass, like the one's who start up the "wrestling's fake!" nonsense.
Anytime I get sad about the current state of wrestling I come back and watch this match. The crowd was so into it, this was a great night in professional wrestling.
Hogan originally wanted this match to be a non-title dark match so he could con the Turner bigwigs into believing HE was the reason for the huge turnout at the Georgia Dome. Hogan's a legend...but he's a politician and a self serving opportunist.
I liked Hogan as a heel. Too bad the booking was so horrible. the Hollywood character was a cool contrast to his hero character...cheating and stuff like that.
Higher up big wigs who didnt understand wrestling started to get too many hands in the business, and it got taken away from the people who built it up to his level and gave it to people who they thought would be successful with it, who then went on to ruin it forever.
If Bishoff had been able to buy it in 2000, it would still be around today. But corperate dragged on and it died the day AOL sold it at a flea market rate.
I can only imagine if they had built this match up like the Sting/Hogan match and put it on PPV. With it being in Atlanta, probably could've drawn an 80K attendance easily.
Typical WCW, they jumped the gun to win one week against RAW and threw away millions of guaranteed money.
Oh shut up. It made the match more exciting and it didnt hurt it at all. Quit being a hater. Im so sick of people trying to act like they know shit about wcw when they dont.
-WCW allowed Hogan to use his creative control clause to lose the title to Goldberg on TV instead of PPV; GOLDBERG WOULD GET ALL THE CREDIT FOR THE HUGE PPV BUYRATE AND OLD MAN HOGAN DIDN'T WANT THAT
-By this time WCW had no credible challengers for Goldberg (NWO buried them all) and instead pushed the Leno, Malone and Warrior angles
-Kevin Nash beat Goldberg for the belt with a cattle prod at Starrcade 98; see a pattern here?
they would have done a sick PPV buyrate had this happened on PPV. Thats why I dont like Hogan as much as I do the other wrestling legends. I'd still fuck his daughter though.
Those wrestlers were the best besides the rock brock lesnar, batista triple undertaker kane eddie guerrero rip chris beniot rip shawn michaels tijari dtp you can't blame hogan hes like 60 in that match
