@rickzitarosa: there's a great photo of the Los Angeles doing a vertical headstand on the mast at Lakehurst- the crew just hung on until it swivelled & came back down on the other side. Damage was minimal- no injuries to the crew, and some minor punctures in the skin from loose items falling through. (Guess rigids are more tolerant of unintentional aerobatics while moored!)
"kited" (almost a HEADSTAND) on the mast June 21, 1955, causing TEARS to the air ballonets and subsequent deflation. The ZPG-2's were GOOD airships, though somewhat hampered by squabbling between the Navy, Goodyear and Douglas Aircraft (who had the original contract to build them.)
Don't have time to watch this now, but will DEFINATELY check it out in it's entirety later. Looks fascinating. It's Memorial Day Weekend and just remembering my father this day. He was a mechanic in the 50's, stationed at Lakehurst. I always loved to listen to him talk about his days in the Navy. He passed away about five years ago. He was in this unit...ZP-3. Thanks for the awesome video!!!
dmorris, thanks for posting these videos. I grew up surrounded by my dad's collection of blimp memorabilia from when he was in the Navy.

Hi DrBuzzO: All the crew were able to get out of the car as the bag collapsed around them. No injuries.
Regards,
Don M.

What was the reason for the airship deflating on the mast ? Did the envelope fail ? Thunderstorm ?
