I like making herb infused oils, they smell great, are great for applying directly to the skin (like calendula for irritation) and make delicious salad dressings... I like using grapeseed oils. I love the video! Meg please make a hole more on herbs! Working with them is so fun and gratifying! oxoxo, you rock!
I really like learning about herbs, one major project i did and enjoyed in Highscool was creating a book about herbs. I look forward to another video on this subjects =)
Its when you use an alcohol or other base liquid to extract the goodness from a plant. My mommy makes echinacea tincture with vodka as a base. Keeps the common cold at bay!
I loved this episode, and I can't wait for the next one involving herbs.
But could someone let me know where I could get a dropper bottle? I live near Washington, DC (In the US, for those who might not know) and I can't seem to find any.
Very informative as per. In England (well Britain as a whole) we pronounce the "H". I'd've got a smack on the back of my hands with a wooden ruler from my teacher if I'd've dropped Hs like that.
gingerroot for acid reflux/stomach upset, papaya enzyme for nausea. the stinging nettle (freeze dried) really does work, and so do kava kava and valerian. honey and garlic for sickness are great as antibacterial and healing...aloe plant for burns...arnica for muscle pain...mint for tummies,,,i also make colloidal silver at home and take the liquid (by tsp in liquid) for infection.
Thanks for the tut on tinctures! Just as an fyi for herbs, if you make a St. Johns Wort Tincture, for any ladies who attempt to make some be very aware that st. johns wort can affect birth control pills. So, if you are on birth control, avoid St. johns wort. You might want to try Catnip as a sedative instead. It makes cats hyper, but its a mild sedative like Valarian or St johns wort....and its REALLY easy to grow
I actually use aromatherapy/essential oils more because of my massage training, but the same ideas! There are certain herbs/oils that work great for general aches and pains, plus work twice as fast as any OTC meds. I have hundreds of recipes in my collection. :) Love those plants!
You know a few teaspoons of Alcohol eases any anxiety and isnt grain alcohol moonshine? JUst being cheeky any natural way to soothe yourself ios awesome foe my sinus problems I drink plenty of tea to open up my nasal cavity.
My favorite herbs are lavender and peppermint :) I used to have one of those multi-side herb pots but it didn't do too well being left outside last winter and the pot cracked in two, although the herbs somehow still managed to grow out of it this year...
I drink pepermint tea if I feel nauseous or have a headache...or I also use peppermint essential oil for aromatherapy. My mom picks on me and says my answer for everything is peppermint! Also, burning basil essential oil is good for de-stinkifying a stinky kitchen.
great episode! loved the rap in the beginning :D hehe. hmmm, whats an alternative to using alcohol?! I don't drink nor use alcohol in anything.. any suggestions? :)
Its not a tincture without alcohol... and its not like youre DRINKING, you can put a drop or two under your tongue and... yeah its not like swiggin out of a bottle. If youre that against alcohol... tinctures arent for you.
This is hilarious. Such a great way to address herb gardening. Love it. I'm so thrilled with my basil plant, it's already yielding enough basil that I dont have to buy expensive yucky pesto in the store.
I love this episode, you obviously put so much work into it! As a straight edge person, I don't use alcohol with my herbs, but also don't expect you to know how to do it alcohol-free. Another wonderful herb is lavender. It flowers this time of year. Lavender flowers are great for a relaxed mind and meditative state. Actual flowers are best, and lavender scented things and oils are generally not effective. I add lavender to candles! My candle is so cute, I wish you could see.
I've considered using valerian myself for insomnia but people should note that it can cause nightmares.
Also if you do want to take it and are brewing a tea don't use boiling water. The oils in the active ingredient are very volatile and will evaporate off if you do.
LOL that intro was funny. Love the new episode. My girlfriend and I have a herb bench on our back porch that has rosemary, thyme, lavender, sage, stevia, and parsley. We also have some aloe out there too but I don't think that counts as an herb. We cook with the herbs and just got a book about medicinal uses of herbs. Oh and we have basil in the veggie garden. Great video!
I´m mad about lavender. It´s great against insomnia, the smell helps bringing fuzzy babies to sleep, but it also helps against moths, and people also told me it even helps healing fresh wounds or against athletes feet.
Well, thanks so much for this episode, we just bought a house with a huge garden and there´s lots of camil already. I eally, really appreciate this episode!!!
I joined a world religions club at my university primarily run by pagans. One activity we did was make dream pillows in which we all made herb cocktails to help with ailments such as insomnia, appetite, focus, etc. I keep mine under my pillow as the sweet smell helps me fall asleep at night.
My mom and I grow herbs, and we have four or five different types of mint that pretty much have their own flower bed because they are SO invasive. They kicked everything out. =(
mint in a large water pitcher or jug, its soo good and actually makes me want to drink the 8 glasses a day, just rinse the mint really well, and muddle it or crack the leaves to get the goodness out
No, the ''h'''s are said in everything except herb. I say the h, though, because I think it's more correct. (For further weirdness, we say the h on herbivore.)
mmm I'm definitely going to have to try out the new moon nettle out next year, my hay fever drives me to the point where I want to rip my eyes out. Might be a little to late to do it now, but next summer I'll be sure to give it a go!
