  • Magaldi looks so irritated by her

  • I just don't like Patti LuPone. I figured I'd give her a shot since everyone seems to rave about her, but I just don't appreciate her voice or the way she sings. It is too rough and she seems to speak more than sing. Mind you, I listened to her sing Buenos Aires and Rainbow High. I was not impressed. I like Madonna's version. It may be due to having heard her first, but I find her version to be more melodic and pleasing to the ear. She also humanized Evita. LuPone gave her a cheap bitch feel.

  • That is not to insult Lupone's singing, as I am sure she appeals to many, but she just isn't my style. In her defense, I can say she commanded the stage in much the same way I would think Eva Peron did. I just prefer Madonna in the long run.

  • What the hell is it with LuPone fans and whinging about how she r teh bestest on the videos of any other artist who has dared do the part? She isn't the best by a mile. Shut the fuck up, you idiots made me dislike her because I'm bored with seeing her name.

  • and she was three months preganant filming these scenes. wow.

  • with Lourdes?

  • yes. she wrote (in Vogue magazine) that she was a little worried that she might cause damage as the dancing was strenous.

  • I think movie products, like 'Evita' here, appeal more to the mass. Thus, many things may be altered from the original versions, at the expense of the artistic taste of theatrical audiences.

I myself like both the artists' works. I watched Madonna's Evita before, and I am just impressed by Patti Lupone.

It's a good thing that you guys brought this topic up, so that I came to know Pat. But, to remind you if I may, we are all doing this for Art's sake, not for our own Id's or Ego's!

  • que viva buenos aires sos un gran orgullo yanki madonna yo soy yanki y mis padres argentinos 2 paises unidos por un solo corazon buenos aires te amo

  • I'm not saying this is bad, but the music was altered so much, it doesn't even sound like same song!

  • Great Song!

  • she won a golden globe award for her role in evita, and I think she was 7 months pregnant when filming?

  • sorry guys i think madonna was great for this role!you have to see her performance in the film as a whole and not judge from her voice or looks only. Besides this is not a video clip...

  • j'adore j'adore j'adore=)

  • I love how Madonna and the second man dance. Its like he "owns" her, and she is enraptured in his movements. What a turn on!!

  • I wish that they had included the original middle dance music.

  • "And....if ever I go too far...."

    Aye Dios Mio.

I'm so happy I heard this sung first by Patti LuPone before this version.

  • She did not do any of the songs in the original keys and that really takes away from it. If a performer cannot do it in the key it was written they should not play the part, plain and simple. it was written that way for a reason. That, and while Madonna is great in her own right, she will NEVER compare to Patti LuPone's portrayal of Evita.

  • While I agree that songs shouldn't be done in different keys than the original, it still happens, and is a legitimate practice.

It's very common in movies, because movie-going audiences don't like to hear very high belts like Broadway audiences do. They want to hear belts, but they like them to be in a lower register. It's more pleasant to the ear for people who don't know much about Broadway and the style.

And Madonna's performance is great in the key that she does it in.

  • madonna has been working very hard to achieve the singing abilities she shows in that musical and one has to respect that, although it is a fact that she'll never have a stunning voice. this song suits her style, but - if you listen to her in 'don't cry for me..' and compare her version to patti lupones (as a musical trained singer) aaaand donna summers version you`ll see what i mean ;-).

  • Patti LuPone's portrayal of Eva I found didn't have crisp enough diction. Not that Madonna is good.

  • yeah, you are right about that for sure, Patti did have some pretty terrible diction in the 70's and 80's. it is completely turned around though; her diction now is perfect.

  • you know, madonna was pregnant when she filmed this - you can tell by her stomach

in the outside shots- shes stick thin

but in the pub, her stomach is more rounded

just thought you might find that interesting LOL :) x

  • I LOVE Madonna sooo much!!!!!!

She is really good in Evita.

  • Fabulous

  • teehe

  • fabulous song

  • i'm confused. when does Evita become blonde?

  • She becomes blonde durig her acting career Madonna is an amazing singer but i have to admit major talent is dancing i mean it's amazing!

  • To tell the truth, madonna has a small ammount of talent in well everything. her big talent is dancing and i personally think that they should have made this movie 15 like in the 80s and patti lupone could have been eva. Madonna didnt do bad but she wasnt all that good either. Fabulous movie besides.

  • Madonna she's just a diva!

  • Good performance and a good song.

  • love the movie.. I've seen it off-broadway in MA as well. so many people are close-minded when it comes to differing versions.. So what if it's different than you're used to.. It's still performed very well, even if it is Madonna.. who, BTW does an excellent job both acting and singing in the movie.

  • I TOTALLY agree

  • Where the hell is her accent?

  • In fairness to Madonna, she sang it more clearly than Patti (but their voice is certainly different). I heard Patti's version and I didn't understand most of what she's singing. And that is certainly a no no in a movie.

  • the genre of this version is actually fit for the time and setting of the movie.

but I hope Madonna sounded a little more aggressive and confident in this song because this part should show Evita's strong determination and self-confidence despite the hardships in Argentina's big apple. Just my two cents ;)

  • Madonna and Bandares were both brilliant throughout this incredible Movie version of Evita. The only reason this doesn't do landslide success at the Box office is 90% of Americans couldn't find Argentina on a World Map tomorrow if you showed them where it's located today.

  • I love this song but i don't like this version, i had to turn it off half way through cause i thought it might put me off the song all togather! =[=[

  • Madonna did an okay performance, to me...

But somehow I'll always be true to Julie Covington's version of Evita. She rocked Buenos Aires, man.

  • Brunette Madonna is nice.

  • Yes, Madonna was cast because of her fame; movies need a "name" to guarantee ticket sales. Plus, Parker wanted an actress who could sing and not lip-sync; that's why the project sat on the shelf for years. And, the camera loves Madonna; she's extremely photogenic. Although Lupone has so much personality she can project to the back row in a theatre, in close-up she looks like a drag queen.

  • Riiiiio della Plata. Stend back Buenos Aires.

Arrrrw. I love this song, i love Madonna.

    I can't wait the 6 septhember from ROME. *_________*

    Dream are wish.

  • i love dat song it is so kool

  • ชนะเลิศค่ะ อีดอก

  • she aint no patti lupone

  • LOVE THIS MOVIE! we saw it in spanish class!!! haha

  • This is too poppy of a version...I don't know what I think about it.

  • Buenos Aires..Beautiful town..I love you!

  • madonna proves here to all her critics she can sing to a phenomenol standard, low d wow

  • omg ik i was gonna say. i mean she's very good but yea ..very low. i was in the show at a community theatre near me and it was much different! but this is still good. i agree good range

  • Can you believe how low she goes on this song? She goes down to a low D in Bass clef- thats a really good range for a girl!!!

  • she shouldnt have to hit a low D!! they lowered the key so much cause her range sucks and she cant belt like in the broadway version. id much rather her hit some great high belted notes than have her end the song singing like a man

  • Honestly i have looked at several of the people who played Evita and Madonna is the closest looks wise... in some pictures they are so close it is beyond scary. I think that that is the most important part of playing apart like that...

  • Are you people seriously supporting this? Have none of you ever heard of Patti LuPone and her award winning performance of Evita? Patti was the original Evita and she can kick Madonna's ass any day singing any song. This whole score had to be transposed to a lower key because Madonna couldn't sing it the way it was meant to be sung. Madonna was only cast in this movie because of her fame, not because of her talent.

  • You're arguing apples vs turtles. Live theatre and film are two entirely different genres and very few Broadway stars transition sucessfully to film(Ethel Merman and Mary Martin). Film is a personal medium and it requires a more-nuanced performance.

  • Thanks for stating the obvious. Actually there are many stage stars that have done films and been successful. Even if it's a movie you need to have someone who can sing. Madonna and Helena Bonham Carter were awful singers for the roles they had. Personally, I think that Madonna butchered every song in Evita. I'm not saying she didn't look the part or that she was a bad actress, just that she couldn't sing it like it was meant to be sung.

  • Not true Karens18cats. Martin translated very well to film. She was amazing in 'Night and Day'.

  • madonna VUELVE A ARGENTINA ASI LOS URUGUAYOS QUE TE AMAMOS PODEMOS IR A VERTE

  • Madonna's new album, HARD CANDY, is coming out April 29th. It features producers such as Pharrell, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. The first single, 4 MINUTES, will be released March 17th, featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. BUY IT! BUY IT! BUY IT! BUY IT! BUY IT! BUY IT!

  • YEAH!!! MADONNA RULES!!

  • This song was inspiring and reminds me when I left Susanville Ca, and moved to Southern California:)

  • I love Buenos Aires , can't wait to go there again!!!!!!!!!!

  • wauu!!! me encanto!!! y VIVO en Buenos Aires!!!!

  • i'd like it if it faded out, or cut to black on the big DUM at the end :)

  • i love this song and the movie i didn't think madonna would be good in this movie but she was actually pretty good

  • I love this song

  • love the evita songs - i think her voice and her whole singing was the best when she recorded all these songs.

  • Any musicians out there? What is that she does at 1:44? Is that a key change? What to what?

  • i love the way she say Buenos Aires, Rio de la Plata, Corrientes and Nueve de Julio!!!...she's the best by far!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Are you joking? Have you ever heard of Patti LuPone? She is THE best. Madonna has nothing on Patti. Go look for Patti's performance of Buenos Aires and you will see how it's truly done. Madonna is nothing but crap. I LOVE musicals, but this movie is probably one of the worst movie musicals ever. The key of the entire score was lowered because Madonna couldn't sing it the way it was supposed to be sung...

  • gotta be kidding!

  • about what? how terrible the movie was because of Madonna's mediocre vocals? or what?

  • you may not like madonna for some reason, but she's a great singer, and very talented...there's no way you can deny that, cause facts are facts

  • Patti LuPone won best leading actress in a musical for Evita, those are facts. Madonna was cast in this movie because of her celebrity status and not her talent, that's a fact. This movie bombed way beyond imagination, that's a fact. Patti LuPone will always be remembered as the ORIGINAL Evita, that's a fact. And the score of the entire musical had to be rearranged because Madonna couldn't sing it, that's a fact...

  • madonna won a Golden Globe for this!...that's a fact, and ask anybody all over the world if the know who plays Evita, they are gonna 'madonna, of course'...i've never heard about that patti...and most of the ppl haven't neighter

Besides, saying that everything was arranged, is just an opinion, of sb who doesn't like her...and if i'm wrong, show me the prove of those arrangemts

  • You can go on youtube and look it up, all her songs where transposed to a lower key, that's not my opinion, that's a fact. I mean, anyone can tell, unless they're deaf. That is something that was Big News when the movie came out. And what's a Golden Globe anyway but the poor's man Oscar. Golden Globes are a joke. Tony, Emmy, Oscar and Grammy are pretty much the four main awards. Of course people will say Madonna, because she was in the movie...not everyone gets to see a theatre performance.

  • In case you don't know, and obviously you don't, Patti played Evita on Broadway in 1979. That's 17 years before Madonna did it. Patti did the show for two years. That's two years of performing 8 times a week! I doubt Madonna has the endurance to even last one week. Patti LuPone is a legend and I'm sorry you've never heard of her. But she has created some of the most memorable roles in history, including Evita. Not only did she do it on Broadway but in Australia as well.

  • ok, we'll never agree, but the thing is, only a few ppl know about Patti, but absolutely everybody knows Madonna, an untalented person can't never ever reach that.

and, the Golden Globe is a very respectful award (all awards are, except for the Grammy, whose reputation are way low!)

  • An untalented person can reach that level of fame and even more. Just look at Paris Hilton. She is famous and has absolutely no talent. If you look back in theatre history, "Broadway's lost treasures" for example, you will see Patti's names mentioned many times. And I agree that people will say Madonna was Evita because she did the movie, and that's what movies do. Just like in 15 years people will say Johnny Depp was Sweeney Todd because they have no idea who Len Cariou or George Hearn are.

  • And trust me, it's not just a few people who know about Patti LuPone...she is currently doing the leading role of Gypsy on Broadway....59 years old and still doing 8 shows a week...

  • paris hilton has reached nothing compared to madonna, besides, nowadays it's easier to reach fame, but years ago it wasn't, and madonna did it!...and i'm sure, soebody did Evita before patti

  • oh, c' mon... Elaine Paige played it a year before patti!!!!...so check your facts out!!!

besides, the paly was originally an album (like jesus christ superstar), and after the hit of ot, they decided to do the play, which was firt played by Elaine Paige as i said, NOT patti

  • I have more respect for Paloma San Basilio, maybe you've heard of her? She sang the Spanish version of Evita back in the 80s. And she was INCREDIBLE compared to Madonna. If you don't believe, please look it up. They're all on youtube. The thing is, many actresses could've done the part 10 times better than Madonna. But they went with her to appeal to younger audiences...

  • of course i'n seen paloma san basilio performance and it was great, propably ppat's was great too..i don't care, but madonna will be rebembered as evita, and she did a great work too...

you know, singing with very high notes doesn't mean you're talented, you can have a great voice, and a soft voiced at the same time...for instance, madonna's voice in her song 'live to tell' was stated as the best female voice of all times

  • Elaine Paige was did a concept role. Meaning it worked as a basis for what it became. After Elaine did it, the part was worked on to be brought to Broadway, that's when Patti was cast. Most plays work like that...in the case of WICKED, if you know what WICKED is, the concept Elphaba was Stephanie J Block, but the Original and ultimately the definitive Elpahaba was Idina Menzel.

  • please, dont be like that, saying 'don't argue with me about theatre' or 'if you know waht wicked is'...the thing is, you were wrong, it was first played by somebody else, perdiod.-

  • I'm not being like anything. You keep talking about Madonna being in the movie. I'm telling you, well before the movie there was the stage performance. I'm saying if you know what wicked is because A you dont know who Patti is, and B its a broadway show, and not many people, like you said, will get to know what it is since they go by the movie. How can they call her best female voice of all time when there are singers out there like Billie Holiday, Sarah Brightman, Teresa berganza so many others

  • Well, don´t forget about the actual Argentinian actresses who played Evita. Valeria Lynch is one of them.

  • Singer, actress,tv host and someone who can actually understand what she`s singing about since she`s Argentinian. Not like bloody Madonna.

  • I'm not saying having a soft voice is bad, but once a performance has been taken to the level Patti took it, you need to find an artist that will do it justice, and that's why Madonna was torn by critics when she did this movie. In fact the shows signature song, "Don't Cry For Me Argetina" is not about belting, it's a song that needs to be sung softly but Madonna butchered the song. She can be great doing her kind of music and being agay icon, but not doing Broadway. Madonna just can't.

  • Julie Covington recorded the original concept album with Colm Wilkinson in 1976. The original Eva in London was Elaine Paige in 1978, and the original Eva on Broadway was Patti LuPone in 1979. Changes were made to the show by the creative team between the concept album and the London production, and the London production and the New York production, and these changes are evident in all three studio recordings.

  • madonna, we love you here in Argentina!!!!

    when are you coming??...please!!!!

  • I love this movie! Its with so mutch emotionel things

  • I from Colombia, but I love Argentina, specially Buenos Aires, like Madonna said Buenos Aires is a magical city!! tango, food, people, make amazing this place!! I LOVE BUENOS AIRES!!

  • hey I'm from Colombia too, but you should probably check out Patti LuPone (the Original Evita) before you give Madonna credit for this song....
