@joshbot360 Seen 'em before. They're nothing special just generic cheap monitors. Probably similar to Acers or something. Nothing wrong with Acer though, I mean some of them look good too! Some of em don't always last as long but who can say. They might or might not last a long time.
@MN12BIRD Because i was hesitant to get one with my new computer, my mom got one also and i was stunned at the picture quality. Its an LED 24" Monitor and it was cheap, although it is a little flimsy around the stand.
@joshbot360 I have an AOC Envision 24" LCD tv and it's great, I've been using it since roughly 2007-2008 and I haven't had any issues with it and I've taken it everywhere, the only problem is that it only has one HDMI port, but since you're using it as a computer monitor then that's not an issue.
@joshbot360 Oh and I've dropped it twice (I used to travel everywhere with it), which caused a small crack in the back casing but it never caused an issue on the actual display, so that gives you an idea how sturdy it is.
i have this same monotor but i have a problem thats driving me crazzy!!! when i start playing games its all good than it all blacks out and it takes me like 2 min for the screen to reset and it does this constiantly i know its not my computer/laptop/ desktop mount cuz it runs fine with the monoter off but i hate dooing that cuz my laptop screen sucks...
I know some people watch movies on their computer but that's really not important to me. Seems 4:3 just became "uncool" all of a sudden no matter what the application, so they disappeared.
I'm used to two 5:4 monitors which is plenty wide enough. I can't imagine switching to a pair of modern displays, it would be way too skewed.
(Great review BTW, I'm just griping about the world. :)
@shaggadally Do you mean the Hauppage HDPVR? If so than no, this isn't a TV and it has no Composite, S-Video or Component inputs. Just VGA, DVI and HDMI like most monitors.
Great review. Definitely planning on buying this monitor as part of my new build.
Also, UK techie magazine PC Pro, recently reviewed this monitor and immediately pushed it to the top of their "A-List" - And they usually get it right in my experience.
Great review - thanks for taking the time to make such an extensive review. This is going head to head (for me) with the Asus MS238H (LED Backlit) or MS248H (.6" bigger :P).
I use my screen a lot for games, but I need a lot of clarity for editing photos (I'm a graphic designer) so will this Samsung screen be good for both?
@cdthedrummer It would be okay but like any 6-bit TN panel you will loose color accuracy. If you really need a good monitor for graphic design go IPS 8-bit panel. They cost quite a bit more (hence most monitor are TN) but you get the true millions of colors they claim!
Question, I have my computer hooked up with the dvi cable right now. If I was to hook up the HDMI cable through the adaptor will it make my picture any better? The reason I ask is I have my TV hooked up to my pc through hdmi with the adaptor, the picture is alot better . Is that due to that my tv is that much better than my pc monitor?
I was gong to buy another HDMI adaptor to hook my monitor up with, but if my pic quality will stay the same as it is hooked up with DVI than I wont bother.
@BIGGBAGA They use the exact same video signal your adapter does nothing except change the pins and shape so it shouldn't make any difference at all in the picture quality. Make sure you're running the monitor in the native resolution otherwise it might just be the monitor.
@Padoca85 Depends on the monitor and with VGA being analog the quality of the cable can make a noticable difference. I've seen some monitors with good cables and I can't tell the difference but I've seen some at work with cheapo cables and you can see ghoasting/color bleeding. Generally if it looks good now I wouldn't worry about it too much.
@duhmez Yeah HDCP will go over DVI-D. Actually, many DVI-D monitors without HDMI still have HDCP compliance but not all. I mean especially if it's a few years old you might want to check. HDCP will not go over analog video like VGA or Component and it wont go over USB either.
Id avoid monitor speakers unless it was for office use otherwise a really nice monitor, i see that even LED monitors are getting cheaper im happy with my samsung that is 1680x1050 16:10 i have a LCD tv also so i jsut use that for movies and consoles, older consoles i tend to use an old widescreen CRT.
Did your frames per second drop a lot compared to your old monitor?
Use V-Sync if the screen tears a lot i get a lot of screen tearing without it.
@KieranD212 Yeah lots of people like the 16:10 monitors. Yeah FPS dropped a little since I went from 720p to 1080p and like you said I could try VSync I did notice a little tearing in RE5.
@PearlSWEDEN Yes this has HDMI right on it so you can plug in a PS3 or 360 and play. I also showed the little DVI-D to HDMI adapter so anyone with an LCD monitor with DVI-D knows they can also use that to get HDMI.
I think my brother's monitor/HDTV is also by Samsung. He originally wanted just a monitor, and Best Buy mistakenly gave him the next step up, which had an HDTV tuner in addition to the standard monitor ports. In the end, he never returned the monitor. That was a very good steal of a deal for him, if you ask me.
avatar was a good movie i though. rented from blockbuster express for free with code things i get on receipt from speedway. i want to buy it when it gets cheaper. $20 is kinda high for any dvd i think.
i just got some oldish monitores for free.on freecycle all crt. emachines from 2005 and ctx from 2001. there was a lot of others. wonder if i should have got the aoc one since it looked newer. also seen a macintosh lc 500 and think i should have got it. maybe see if i can still. wish i could get a lcd but little too much for me and think i should get a better tv first.
@MN12BIRD Yes, it is quite nice for web browing actually, and movies are still displayed full HD, with small 60 pixel black bars on the top and the bottom. Something nice also is that with 1200 pixels in height, older games that doesn't support widescreen can just be set to 1600x1200, and displayed with black bars on the sides. Still a nice monitor you picked there, I like the pivot stand. Mine is completely fixed, and I kinda wish it wasn't.
@RamielReviews Cool Dell monitors are usually made by Samsung my other LCD monitor is a Dell and it's great too. You have to change the resolution in Windows and match it to what the monitor recommends.
@ConceptVBS I've seen acer monitors like 15 years old no problem and mine is approaching 5 years and I have NEVER had one problem..no wavy lines going up the screen, no dead pixels nothing
@misterintellivision Acer, Asus, Samsung, LG, and many others all make decent monitors. But Samsung is the largest seller of LCD panels in the world. Many other brands use the actual LCD panel from Samsung inside them. But like I said they're all good in my book I've seen some nice Acers for the price too.
Hey Jake, that's a sweet monitor! Blows my new monitor out the Window. haha...
Well said about the DVI and HDMI issue. I've had so many people telling me that I should have got a monitor with HDMI, and I can't say any clearer that this is only going to be used with my computer. I don't have a PS3 or anything... lol
Generally Samsung are pretty good or so I've heard, but I'm sticking with my 17 inch Acer for now, as I don't play games on my PC at all these days. What do you mean by a TN Panel? I suspect this monitor would work just fine if you used it with say a Mac Pro, right? Where is the monitor made?
@Lachlant1984 Yeah most of their monitors and TV's seem to be pretty decent. They are a Korean company (like LG) but of course like %99 of all electronics these days it's made in China. It should work in a Mac Pro. TN is the type of LCD panel. %90 of LCD's on the market are TN except for the really high end/professional ones are IPS or other. TN doesn't give a true color reproduction for professional use. It's something most people wouldn't notice unless you had a trained eye.
Whats the typical power usage of this monitor? Its worth comparing as if you can find a model with lower wattage for the same specs, you will save money on your electricity bill.
btw 2ms or 5ms is always grey to grey.. it's kinda like dynamic ratio. Do you know what the typical ms is? (dunno exact name in english) thanks and have fun with your new monitor
@Laserchicken88 Yep I think Intel and Apple are working on a single cable that will use something similar to USB 3.0 to transfer EVERYTHING. It would be nice.
Looks like a solid monitor. I have a 20" Acer 1680x1050, with get a 1080p one eventually. Thinking of getting an LG this time, they seem like higher quality than Acer. But Samsung makes nice TVs so their monitors should be just as high quality too.
This sounds like a really nice monitor. Good price/quality ratio. Now I wouldn't want to go back from using my TV as my monitor, but if I ever do, I'll consider this one.
You said you'd never use the rotate screen function, but I think it would be really helpful with web browsing. Also, there are many videos on YouTube where screens are used in a vertical position for pinball emulation - no scrolling that way.
Nice monitor, I have a samsung monitor myself that I got in costco. Great monitors. IT doesn't have speakers, usb ports or any of that stuff. I don't really care about those things, but maybe the usb ports because its goot to have plenty of usb ports lol. But mine is 1080p 16:9.
@crusherbad64 Yeah I hear ya I wouldn't have bought one with speakers and USB if there was a similar one for a little less because I'll never use that stuff anyway.
It's a lot like my Asus VW246H 24" LCD. Has HDMI, DVI-D, VGA, Speakers, 1080p resolution, 20000:1 contrast ratio (Sorry couldn't find the typical ratio.)and 2ms response rate. I payed $295 AUD for it which is about $245 USD Last year. Been using it for my pc and my ps3. It's so nice playing ps3 on a 1080p LCD rather then a 576i CRT.
@nfistfu Oh yeah Asus makes some great monitors too. Actually some of them seem to be the best choice for the price. I considered Asus too but got a good price on this locally.
@FrenchToastLand No, no TV Tuner, no NTSC "TV" inputs. That's pretty rare on a computer monitor unless it claims to be a TV/Monitor or has a TV Tuner. Most computer monitors have only DVI, VGA and possibly HDMI but no composite (yellow) or Component type inputs.
