She was given the assignment and paid tribute to Hitchcock and Novak by watching the scene over and over and by acting the scene to her utmost to duplicate Novak.
No matter who was cast as in the photo shoot, people would complain and make comparisons to the original. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion. But what's this about Renee not being pretty? She looks gorgeous here, and definitely comparable to Kim Novak! Cool idea to pay tribute to Hitchcock in this way, although gotta admit it's always a little unsettling when actors nowadays try and "recreate" old movie scenes, etc. Case in point: Usher doing the Singing in the Rain dance scene...
kim had a peach of a life. I was always curious if she had no kids my choice. vertigo is a mystifying and amazing movie. masterpiece as usual for hitch. i never saw the love interest with jimmy stewart and kim, i think someone else should have played his part
Sorry unclealand, but Kim Novak WAS acting in Vertigo - and she gave the performance of a lifetime. Somewhat overlooked when it was released, but as time has passed, film critics and historians have generally concluded that it was a very nuanced, intelligent, and thoughtful portrayal of a complex character. Actually, a great performance. As far as Renee goes, her desire to pay tribute to Kim's outstanding work is extremely commendable.
Is a mystery to me how this most unattractice woman ever made it . She's got one of the weirdest faces in the history of film. Everytime I see her, she looks to me like a hamster with a mouth full of pellets. Renee, I even hate her name...as Kim Novak?
Totally agree with you Tiger Lily about Kim's performance and the film itself....Nothing about the film was "real ' ... Kim's "dream like " acting is done purposely and draws you in just as it does Scotty...I love her in this film...one of the most unappreciated of the Hollywood stars !
Renee Zellweger and Kim Novak shouldn't be uttered in the same sentence. Kim Novak is one of the most beautiful women in the history of cinema. Renee Zellweger always looks like she's been sucking a lemon.
I agree, I've only seen about 3 or 4 Hitchcock films but they are quality. I mean you could say Vertigo was slow, but it was an excellent character piece, the characters were very deep and there was always more going on than just what they were feeling or showing. And the actors were talented enough to portray this.
Anyway I'll stop rambling now, my point being that I agree with NGS712 that Hitchcok's films don't need remaking.
I think she's doing fine--she's just imitating the overly dramatic acting of that period and of Kim Novak. I love Vertigo, but the acting is a bit over the top...
there is nothing overly dramatic about the way she is acting.
and what is this "overly dramatic acting of that period"
have you seen the movie?
Kim Novak actually did a pretty good job.
how would you act if you were put in the same situation of that character?
I'm sorry but a lot of the acting today in movies suck and is way overly dramatic. During the period of Virtigo acting in movies was often better then today.
I didn't feel Kim Novak was over the top at all in her portrayal. During that time acting was actually shifting into a naturalistic style. Sure the film itself, the whole theme is outside the box and dramatic but Novak's performance wasn't too much at all.
Novak brought something ethereal to the role. I'm not certain what Renee's doing here, sort of a glamour-meets-horrified expression photo shoot. Hitchcock would never have cast her, she's too plain. She might be good as Scotty's ex-girlfriend, however.
I agree, if Hitchcock were alive today, he'd never consider Renee Zellweger for the leading lady in one of his pictures. But imagine what he could do with Charlize Theron!
maybe RZ as charlie in Shadow of a Doubt? at this age, maybe a spinster living w/ parents who strangely has no luck with men, and still pines for uncle charlie (Stellan Skarsgard):P

Renee, obviously, isn't playing Kim Novak's Madeline. She's playing Madeline as she would have played it if she'd had the chance. And, to my eyes, she's done a great job and I hope for a proper remake of Vertigo starring Renee Zellweger and Nicholas Cage.
You might need to have your eyes checked if you're equating Renee Z's looks with gorgeous Kim Novak. Kim's empty mystique was what made her great in this movie, not her "portrayal." Renee's a better actress, but it wasn't acting that Kim brought to this role. Bad choice for Renee here.
You are of course entitled to your own opinio, but I still remain that Renee did a fabulous job for the Vertigo photo shoot acting-wise. And nobody's equating Renee's looks with that of Kim Novak's. Kim was gorgeous, no questions asked. Renee's looks, though one might say are atypical, don't fall in the "not pretty" category for me.
It isn't about being pretty. If you had read the information about the video, she portrayed the character of Kim Novak in Vertigo and considering that this was just a photo shoot, she did a very great job. Besides, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and I find Renee pretty.
What we need is a spooky nun to push her off the tower.

Renee Zellweger as Kim Novak? Doesn't work, since Zellweger's 15 years older than Novak was when she played this role.
Renee's grasping at her lost youth.
