  • did you steal that stop sign! lol

  • you kno car guy, i like the voice overs better. doing it live is too intermittent. i kno its easier for you to do it this way anyway. thanx a lot, i feel like im a certified mechanic after watching these videos.

  • love the voice overs keep them coming

  • what did u charge for this job?

  • 100% agree genuine plug leads or NGK everytime

  • Hey Eric, I have a couple of random questions for ya. Have you ever Broken a pry bar in your experience? If you broke Big Burtha, what would you do? I would be shocked because that would either have to be a lot of force being applied or a briddle pry bar.

  • One question for you Eric, I was using cheap tranny oil before if I change to Honda oil, how many liters do I need? 3 or 6? cause I don't want to mix them as the other question will be how can I completely get rid of the old oil? Thanks!

  • @sean69benny If it's an automatic change it 3 times with a drive in between each time. The trans takes 3 quarts at each change.

  • Hey Eric, greets from Germany. Just watched all Parts, something I never did in Person, but I´m about to do it, cause my project I´m working on will need it. Really liked the video, just to get some inspiration of "how to", although its not Honda i´m working on. Just one thing, I mean its not your fault, but in american videos of repairs and stuff... the shape of the cars really scares me. In Germany it just WONT HAPPEN cars come down to such conditions... :) keep going,I like your work!

  • @306cabrio16V Hello Germany! Believe me I know the shape of the vehicles here in the states particularly in the state where I live and it's a real hazard not to mention our roads these days. I hate to say it but in many ways as far as the automotive service and repair world goes Germany has a LOT going for it over other places including the US. Thanks for your comment.

  • I have a question, not about the engine swap itself, but about the engine. Can an engine have good compression test results, no blue/black/white smoke, and still be in bad shape?

Because I have this noise/performance issue on my engine that I can't reason at all =/

Inside the tip of the exhaust and there are no trace of carbon or whatsoever. So, with an engine with such a clean combustion, what could it be?

About the noise itself, it's more like valve rattling, Mechanical noise.

    Thanks

  • @thaik56 Compression can be good but bearings can be worn out causing a loss of oil pressure that can also cause other parts of the engine to fail.

  • @EricTheCarGuy

What are the symptoms of a bad bearing?

    Any noise?

In my case, the noise only appears when the engine is warm/hot, when stone cold, no noise at all, smooth engine. I heard bad bearings are heard anytime, be it cold or hot.

  • I just watched a full hour of you changing out an engine and I LOVED IT!! I liked the voice over you did. Thanks for the great videos!

  • @nobo631 Thats terrific I'm glad I'm able to entertain as well as inform. Thanks for the comment.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Also, can you head over to my channel I've posed a video about a problem w/ my honda. It has a starting problem and I need your help. That would be very helpful.

  • Awesome, people like you are what gives youtube value. I have to attempt to rebuild the power steering pump on my wife's 2003 4runner. Sent the car in for the 100,000 mile service and that was leaking the day after we got it back. Should be fun. Those air tools are great what do you need for a home air tool set up like yours?

  • @detroitr A big ass air compressor with hose and quick connects + the tool and impact sockets, etc.

  • good stuff eric. appreciate the video

  • @joeng26 Glad you liked it, thanks for the comment.

  • your voiceover is like a commentary. It's awsome. It will be tough if you talk while you work on the engine. Makes perfect sense to do voiceovers.

  • @SexyAndlKnowIt On big jobs like this it's easier because I still want to get the work done and if I'm talking the entire time it just takes forever.

  • THE BEST TEACHER EVERR !!! eric im the first in my class thanx to you :-) i have watched many of your videos..for the engine, for brake for electrical parts...but the most difficult for me is the transsmision... :-(

  • @nissanprimerare I do hope to cover transmissions both auto and manual in future videos. Thanks for your comment and good luck in school.

  • Very nice on the 3 vid series. I've been interested in rebuilding a motor for a while now, and this in its own way has helped me. The commentary was good, and overall I'd give this video a really good rating.

  • @INSAN37 I'm glad you liked it, thanks very much for your comment.

  • Great job. I am a injured tech and missing my work and watching videos on youtube. I have done motor jobs on at least 20 of the 96-00 civic's. I noticed you removed the engine harness before you removed the engine and instaled it back after the engine was it. I found it was very easy to remove the battery tray and unplug the harness at the ecu and the driver side plug and leave it with the engine when removed and instaled this will save you alot of time.

  • @silversolb18 I would have done that too but I didn't see a connector there or something I honestly don't remember what the deal was with that. I hope you get better soon, it can't be all that fun looking at my stupid mug all day.

  • Comment removed

  • @EricTheCarGuy hope that last comment didn't seem negitive, Im a huge secret fan of yours lol i have a question, I have a 96 integra and the coolant resivoir keeps boiling, I find it empty and sometimes water leaking from it, I'm also losing coolant. I have no over heating issues at all, and it runs fine

  • @Jx1x3 I would suggest watching the Diagnosing A Cooling System Overheat video that I did as that has some suggestions in it that you might benefit from. To me it sounds like you have air in the cooling system the trick is to find out what is causing that.

  • I understand about cutting corners. He got what he payed for.

  • @Jx1x3 Still running strong almost a year later.

  • 503stars,liked,favorite,playlisted

    BEST TEACHER EVERRRR

    with love

    sigh

    still dirty

  • @marsL001 Your going to run out of stars soon.

  • hy is you had producible with trying to get it in try a 1992 geo tracker engin and trany with the 4x4 transference still all to gather try that one

  • hey eric how much did the guy pay for his honda engine.

  • @slayer82067 I honestly don't remember this was some time ago.

  • hey dude got a 1.5 soch single cam v tec loking two put in 1.6 v tec engine.what do i need 2 make this hapen.kinda on a buget and i dont wana buy stuff dat i wont need

  • @l131567ab9x7y If your on a budget I don't recommend it as you may have to change the computer and parts of the harness to make that work but to be honest I'm not sure.

  • I am wondering if the ac comps are Denso and Zexel ? Anyways, the engine etc sure loox nice, wish I had a new one for my beater!

  • I see you can only place the distributor only one why with the bracets but I was wondering if the " teeth" only fit into the cam one way as well? I have been trying to move my distributor timing to point to one and the "teeth " look like they line up but I can not get distributor to seat flush. When I tried to use the bolts to help me seat it correctly it broke both the teeth off causing me to buy a new distrubor.

  • @maybenextsundAY I'm thinking you had it 180º out, if it's lined up correctly it should slide right in and seat flush with the head. Just take it back out, turn the drive 180º and try again.

  • the voiceovers are the best thing ever ... almost a real TV show :D

  • @aeligos Anything is possible with enough money and time but keep in mind that some things are more trouble than they are worth, it's up to you to decide that however.

  • Hey Eric, I'm currently replacing my transaxle in my 1999 civic. I was wondering if you have any tips on lining up the input shaft with the clutch disc while the engine is still in the car? I've been playing with it for about six hours and have had no luck.

  • @jdmfreak92 If you replaced the clutch you will need to use a clutch alignment tool to set the location of the clutch disc, many times clutch kits come with one of these but if you don't have one then I would find the one for your clutch disc and center it up, if not the transmission will never go in. Good luck.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Thanks alot. but I'm assuming that you just have to play with it until it slides into place? and yeah I used a tool to align it.

  • @jdmfreak92 If you aligned the clutch disc properly then it may be a matter of 'wiggling' to get it to go back on IF it's the correct clutch disc, I've gotten the wrong one in the past and as a result I often check to see if it slides onto the input shaft before I install it on the flywheel.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Yep thanks a lot eric! I finally got it all back together.

  • @jdmfreak92 Excellent, thanks for the update.

  • nice video eric.

im a novice mechanic and im still trying to fix my 1990 land rover (i know bad car to learn on) and its FUNKY. it has PERMANENT 4wd. not AWD. P4WD. i know i need a new rear end. i just replaced the abs and a few sensors. if u ever get land rovers plz post videos of them

  • @adv512 That may be a while as I really don't like working on them. Good luck with yours however and thanks for the comment.

  • I love the way you open the video by stating "a couple of hours to get the engine back in". That would take me weeks!

  • @davelowe1977 I think you would do better than you suspect if you put your mind to it. Thanks for the comment.

  • you could take pictures of the wires and parts before u start and as you go that way it would easier to remember where everything goes if that helps

  • @southernjags Yea that's a good idea, thanks for the comment.

  • Hey Eric, I got a 1996 Chevrolet 1500 with a 4.3L Vortec V6 that I need to repair. When the previous owner ( my dad ) had it, it got a bad knocking sound so we took the valve covers off and discovered that it got a lot of water in the oil ( It looked like Alfredo sauce ). I think the oil pressure was around 40 but the needle jumped every time it knocked, it been sitting there for about a year and when I last checked the oil the crankcase was full of radiator water. What do you think I should do?

  • @DYLAN102001 Those engines are famous for leaking at the intake gaskets, I would change those out, drain the oil, put new in and see what you've got.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Do you think that I might also need to change the bearings?

  • @DYLAN102001 Possibly, the thing is when water gets into the oil it doesn't lubricate all that well, perhaps if you got the junk oil out and replaced it with new the noise would go away, if not to be honest I would recommend a replacement engine, it's actually less expensive when you consider the time invested.

  • @EricTheCarGuy The noise It makes sounds like rod knock.

  • @DYLAN102001 Hence the recommendation for engine replacement.

  • the head gasket was replaced. Should i just get a new engine?

  • @soadrules366 Impossible for me to say really, you need to do some diagnostics and see what kind of shape it's in to make that call.

  • and it randomly cuts off, and has cut off leaving me stuck in intersections while cars are coming.

  • @soadrules366 That car sounds very sick indeed, you might want to address the oil leak first, watch the spark plug well video that I did as it also applies to Civics but before that you might want to check for a head gasket failure, use the Diagnosing an Overheat video for that procedure. Good luck.

  • eric i have a 95 honda civic ive been having alot of engine trouble : bogging down burning oil quickly and sluggish start. Today i checked my spark plugs and before i took the ignition wire off the plug oill squirted out. All 4 plugs were badly damaged and oily. When i cleaned then and put them back in my car put putted and my exhaust blow white smoke instead of the usual blue smoke from the burning oil.

  • i have a n1 crank pully its just the att belt only its gor a 98 gsr integra i was wondring if its safe to bolt it on and what would happen if i bolt it on im gina have a shop put it on too

  • @aliisathug Sorry but I'm not sure I follow your question. Are you talking about swapping crank pulleys?

  • hey eric why you didnt test drive it??? im a honda lover and you skipped the most important out lol.. and remember how i said i was doing a engine swap auto to manual will i got all the parts just need the tranny ill make a video about that..

  • @vinceperez158 I just didn't tape it.

  • eric doesnt a bad o2 sensor yield to bad gas mileage?

  • @KillerZero259 The sensor isn't bad just the heater in this case but a bad O2 will compromise gas mileage.

  • @EricTheCarGuy eric is there a way to test an o2 senor?

thanks for your replies!!! very helpful!

  • @KillerZero259 Absolutely, watch the video I did on O2 sensors to give you some idea of how they work.

  • @EricTheCarGuy excellent, thanks eric!!

  • how come you dont show us a b series swap?

  • I think that mechanics ought to design vehicles especially engine bays. I miss those spacious designs from the 1940's & 50's

..... Thumbs up if you agree!

  • @Begbucks Admittedly but I actually think this Civic had lots of room to work compared to some that I've worked on. Thanks for the comment.

  • @EricTheCarGuy I think you need classic, perhaps a 1959 Plymouth Fury lol

  • @colin858767: drivetrain would include the drive shaft(s) and dif boxes if included. It's more than just a tranny and engine.

  • Eric - on complicated jobs like engine swaps, I think the narrated clips are really useful. You are actually showing more than you can in a more produced clip. Stay dirty.

  • @TR4zest I'll keep that in mind, thanks for your comment.

  • like always great job. you gotta love them patched up exhaust systems lol i see things like that all the time, stay dirty

  • engine+transmission can also be called drivetrain

  • Excellent Video Eric... you know, voice-overs, hand-signals, sign language. it's all good. Hey I got an Idea for EricTheCarGuy. How about doing some engine work in 3D?. I've got my glasses ready. I love engine work and it's even better when someone else does it. LOL :P

  • @OpenSesame001 That would involve a special camera but it is possible, that would be cool.

  • please make more like this

  • black and white bad idea eric

  • @virokill132 If I didn't innovate I would always be the same.

  • 7:12 You can see that cross member quite qweerly... LOL

  • Eric, I have an O2 heater code, almost similar to what you had in this video. What is the purpose of the O2 heater, and what happens when it's not working?

  • @mrjost55 O2 sensors need to be hot to work correctly, the heater is there to heat them up quickly so that they operate faster and bring the system into what is called 'closed loop' operation. If the heater is bad the O2 will still work but it will take longer to get to temperature.

  • @EricTheCarGuy So in a way, would a car run rich for much longer on startup? Cars run rich when the oxygen sensor is not working, right?

  • Black and White makes you look slimmer (FYI) LOL . This is one thing I learned from my Dad (RIP) who was an old black and white professional photographer for over 30yrs before he moved into color. Thanks for another great video Eric...I'm learning car stuff that we do not have or do on the Airplanes..

  • @CargoInk Sorry to hear about your dad but I like what he had to say. Thanks for the comment.

  • I really liked the 4 cylinder FWD video for those of us who have this type of engine. I also liked that you went over transfering parts from one engine to the other in such details. Gives me a good understanding of what I'm facing if the engine ever goes in my cavalier.

  • @misterericsir Glad you liked it, thanks for the comment.

  • Nice work.

  • Great video Eric. I really like the voice over, lets you work and then explain what your doing instead of stopping all the time to explain. Can cover more info in my opinion and lets you focus on what you are doing. Not sure about the black and white but I can live with that! Keep the great videos coming. I've never really thought about fluids in bolt holes before, will start making sure they are cleaned out from now on. Thanks, Scott

  • @ponch37300 I threw in the B&W at the last moment to mix things up as an experiment as with many experiments they sometimes work and they sometimes don't but it's fun for me to try. The most critical holes to clean out are head bolt holes in a block cause that can cause some nasty problems. Thanks for the comment.

  • 5/5

  • hey eric...love the insiteful vids on everything...im more of the muscle car type mechanic just because i love raw pony's but mostly i love the somewhat simpleness of the era...your videos help me greatly in certain situations but love to watch all your vids just cause thier insiteful to other vehical problems that still pertain to most...anyways, keep up the awesome work and humor to your mad skills...most of all stay dirty bro...

  • @Biothumper79 I do hope to do some videos on muscle cars and making hp at some point because I love that stuff too, got me into doing this in the first place really. Thanks very much for your comment.

  • as far as the voice over.. F it.. if someone wants to post a better video let em but other than that STFU and enjoy the instructional.. too bad my ranger doesn't have a 4 banger FWD setup -=) nice video Eric.

  • hey eric, neat trick with the fender covers, go buy a handful of neodymium magnets, then put your fender covers where you want em and throw those magnets on top! they are super strong so they'll keep em from sliding all over the place plus, the fabric is underneath it so it protects the paint from scratches, just dont put those magnets straight on any nice paint, they are hard to get off without sliding. PLUS, now you got a nice magnet to put all your loose random fasteners! good times! goodwork

  • @alphared11 Good point, when I do a timing belt on these cars I normally put my magnetic tray on the strut tower to hold it is just the way you describe. Thanks for the input and for your comment.

  • eric great job whats the compression on the f22 honda engine 92 accord thanks

  • @Hebert6760 I honestly don't know off the top of my heat but it's listed in the service manual somewhere.

  • Eric, you have been a great inspiration to me and i recently started some projects myself, of which has also gave my dream a more firm foundation for taking off. Thank you.

  • @guardherheart I love comments like yours because that is the kind of thing ETCG was started for in the first place. Thanks very much for your comment.

  • This type of video wasn't bad for the voice-over because its such a big job but most of the videos I prefer the other way because you do close up's. Thats whats most important to me as a tech in training. Thank you Eric!

  • @writerofwriters69 This video was originally going to be a full length pay video and if I did do the step by step it would have been more of what you would have wanted but it also would have taken me a lot longer to do and you would have had to purchase it from the ETCG site. I decided to shoot it this way instead and I have not regretted that decision. Thanks for the comment.

  • I love the series. I'm not sure what kind of guy I must be to find such entertainment in your videos. I watch them from start to finish -- I can't do that for other youtube videos over 20 minutes in length.

This video would have been better, however, if the video was upside down so that the firewall is up and not on the bottom of screen. Seems more intuitive with the firewall up.

    Great video!

  • @170324341a You know now that I think about it I could have done that during the edit, thanks for the suggestion.

  • why is this video black and white and not in technicolor?

  • @HeavyMetalMike666 A tribute to "Clerks".

  • @EricTheCarGuy

I hope no one jams gum in the locks

  • i like voice overs for this type of work.

  • @EndlessT Me too, thanks.

  • @crombieposterboy Check the owners manual to be sure because I don't know to be honest.

  • what is that stuff on the extaust?

  • @BigPython1986 I think it's JB weld.

  • @EricTheCarGuy

Or more like JDM WELD haha XD

  • Thats weird... i watched this yesterday & it wasn't black and white...

  • @Davidsfarmlives Weird indeed.

  • eric

why not rebuild the oddy trans your self . when you had it apart did the three shafts and gears look good . if so then your left with the vlv bodies and remaining clutches. helms makes a book for the oddy and dedicates about 250 pages to the tranny . I took apart an accord tranny (which is basically the same design and only needed a mic and dial indicator as spacial tools . It's a step by step process and they cover every thing. you can't get lost with their instructions.

  • @hobieslug45 Why make the investment in time and money if I could just have replaced it? By the time you get done with a proper trans rebuild you would have spent almost as much as you would if you had just gotten a reman that was properly assembled and tested, time is money my friend and time is something I don't have a lot of these days. No worries, I might even do an R&R video next time as I won't have to worry about the rebuild side of it AND I'll keep the core for a show and tell video.

  • @EricTheCarGuy ran out of words before I could ask you if it was financially feasible to rebuild that tranny .

with my older hondas I would just hit up a junk yard for a tranny . not worth rebuilding. but that would be a good video.

  • @hobieslug45 Time is money so I would defiantly say it's not financially feasible to do a rebuild especially if you don't have the proper equipment to do the work.

  • @hobieslug45 Lastly keep in mind that I drove that van in the day I took the trans apart and had to drive it home which was 30min away, not sure what I was thinking really.

  • Lol at the injector ground Eric..I actually ran into that problem on my civic motor swap. Great series, thanks again!

  • @jwed6 I wouldn't know it if I hadn't seen it myself. Thanks for the comment.

  • how would a person know if cheap oil is as good as expensive oil? i have ran averything from royal purple to cheap oil in my jeep and it seems to run the same

  • @jeepcherokee40 I should do a video on this but all you have to do is look for the API rating on the label of the bottle, companies cannot legally put that symbol on there unless it's sanctioned by API.

  • @EricTheCarGuy thanks i was wondering i already went down to the auto parts store and looked my cheap stuffs got it so ill run that.

  • I'm indifferent to the voice over ;)

  • Wish I had your brain and knowledge about cars.. Your lucky if you think about it..

  • @Demineralize Indeed I am lucky but it's not like I was born with it, I studied it, went to school for it, and have practiced it for more than 15 years, I believe anyone with the desire can do what I do and better.

  • Excellent series, Eric. I enjoyed watching this job.

  • @mazzmari Thank you.

  • Hey Eric, I have a question for you. You might get asked this often but hey im just gonna throw it out there. Whats the best way to get into the auto career? I want to get my auto career started but im not sure whats the best route. I have a nice decent amount of knowledge on cars just from fixing my own every chance I get. I was thinking of attending UTI( which some people say isnt worth the cost) to get my foot in the door. What would you suggest? Your opinion would be much apreciated..THANX

  • @REDROTA94 It just so happens I did a series of videos on that very subject on my other channel, ETCG1, a link is at the top of my recommended channels on my channel page.

  • Don't cross the streams! lol

  • it's Alive ! Great job ETCG

  • Hey Eric great video, At 21:50 in the video you just cranked the engine ,would you recommend that as a way of priming a rebuilt engine without a distributor.

  • @000030stephen Yes, in fact I would, the key is not to have the engine running when you prime it, the use of pre-lubricant's during assembly helps too.

  • Nice work Eric. It looks and sounds great.

  • @RamblinAround Thank you.

  • I look forward to do those little repairs. Its been a while.

  • @mtlh05 Me too! Starting next week, I've already got a stash of them edited.

  • when you were talking about hitting breaker bars with a hammer ive also seen people do things like take a floor jack and pump it up on the breaker bar handle to break things like lug nuts or even crank pulley bolts free

  • @reap62 Watch the Changing A Tire With The Tools In Your Car video.

  • I don't necessarily prefer the voice over process, but I do understand the need to just get things done. I feel less involved with the voice over. When you are talking live per-say, I kind of feel like I'm there. On the other hand, when you use the voice over, you seem to get more information out. Just my opinion.

  • @Hondatech26 Thanks for your input. When I do the pay videos I do more detail because it's a pay video, those take a great deal of time to produce however and many people complain that it's a pay video till they buy it of course. I do try to keep a balance and give the audience what they want but within limits I suppose. Thanks for the comment.

  • I see how hard it must be to properly video a big job like an engine replacement. The voice over is fine but the wide video angles are sometimes not ideal to get key points across. This one had better contrast and lighting compared to videos you did last month. I love your new "noir lighting", ha ha. You should wear a fedora next time (grin).

  • @spelunkerd It's a matter of trying to get the job done and be efficient, when I make my pay videos I make a lot more effort but the complaints there were that people had to pay for the work, when it's free it doesn't have as much detail. Damned if I do and Damned if I don't, the truth is that this was going to be a pay video but I didn't have the time to shoot it. A fedora sounds nice, perhaps even a 'period video' with a car from the 40's, I like the way you think.

  • eric great job i know how hard is to do job and a video at the same time, it take more time that just working in a car. good job amigo

  • @1elAguila Thank you very much for that, I know you know exactly what it takes to make these.

  • Hi Eric, normally I saw some mechanic put liquid gasket on upper and lower radiator hose at engine side. What do you think?

Nice job Eric, have you ever got a back acne? :) For me 5minutes fell my back bone broken lol

  • @axenz1 I would NEVER do something like that, you might have to take it back off again at some point.

  • It was beautiful. Thanks for the great video Eric.

  • Nice one

  • As always, great video. Keep up the great work.

  • Eric,

I plan on getting a new car within the next few months and I was wondering if you could provide some advice. I was looking into getting a new Kia Forte sedan or Koupe, but I was kinda concerned that the quality of the Kia would result in a shorter lifespan, so I am also considering a used 2007-2010 Toyota Camry. Any thoughts?

  • @lrossi888 My thoughts are don't buy a new car, the deprecation is killer. Instead look for a certified used car as the depreciation is not as bad and most times you get the same warranty as you would if you bought it new.

  • hey eric are those actual fender covers or are those blankets? Great video I like the black and white too

  • @jboydmv90 Actual fender covers, they could use some cleaning though. Thanks for your comment.
